  6. Although I wrote this recent piece on Military Keynesianism in relation to its prospects in the UK, given the German economies relatively swift pivot towards manufacturing arms (with the seeming intent of also salvaging industrial jobs), we can I think see this as a much wider phenomenon than one restricted to this isle!

  14. Two years ago I wrote a piece on abandoned seafarers for @NWBylines, now the issue has re-emerged in the Guardian

As I concluded then 'We are not all seafarers yet, but the direction of travel in employment relations points towards their plight, not away from it'! and little has changed requiring me to change that conclusion!

  21. ICYMI:

I was struck by Helen MacNamara's evidence to the #CovidEnquiry & decided to explore the question of the negative impact of a lack of #gender diversity a little further... here's what I found, for @NWBylines

And its not a particularly positive picture... we need to do a lot more on #genderequity if we are in the future to avoid some of the storms we've recently sailed into.

  22. I've been thinking about #artificialintelligence, calls for its #regulation & some previous cases of #technological determinism.

As I've said here before, perhaps the best way of thinking about all this is to return to the work of #LewisMumford who makes the distinction between Authoritarian Technics & Democratic Technics... which encourages us to focus not on the characteristic(s) of #technology, but rather the #political interests of those who deploy & promote it.

  27. ICYMI:

I've been recently worrying about the state of the UK's #managment; in this recent article for @NWBylines I conclude:

'blaming workers for the stagnation in #productivity & thinking there will be a simple technical fix, is certainly not going to resolve the more insidious problem of bad management'!

The UK's accidental & bullying managers are a problem that is eating away at our prosperity & economic potential - don't blame the #workers they miss-manage!

  28. As the #LabourParty starts (ahead of the next election) to rethink its position on #tuitionfees (having, like the LibDems before them stepped back from a promise to abolition them), here are my thoughts on how we might best understand the discussion of funding students' attendance at #university (both tuition fees & living costs)

Key point: its all about who we think captures the benefit(s) of a #university education!

  29. ICYMI: a couple of weeks ago I published an article for @NWBylines on #Seafarer abandonment & how what it might imply for the wider issue of labour relations across the global political economy...

The Q. is: is the plight of seafarers the thin end of the wedge?

  30. Oh boy. Plastics? Well, we need less of those anyways (and maybe actually recycle them?). Pharmaceuticals? Yeah, that's a BIG problem! Maybe manufacture them in smaller factories locally. As for fertilizer? Let's see... #Urea, #nitrogen and #ammonia -- all can come from urine! And sulphur? Grow more garlic and onions rather than use oil production byproducts. WTF!

"Around 30% of fertilizer products go through the Strait of Hormuz. Quatar is the world’s biggest producer of urea, a key input to fertiliser manufacture. The region also produces around 35% of the urea and 23% of the ammonia, another feedstock for nitrogenous fertiliser, which is exported globally. Sulphur, another component of fertiliser manufacture, is also produced in the region as a by-product of oil production."
