October 17, 2024"A water company repeatedly dumped millions of litres of raw sewage illegally into one of #ngland's most famous lakes over a three-year period, the BBC can reveal.
"More than 140 million litres of waste were pumped into Windermere between 2021 and 2023 at times when it was not permitted, our analysis shows, and #UnitedUtilities failed to report most of it.
"It means the company's #IllegalDumping of #sewage into the lake went on for far longer, and was far more extensive, than was previously known.
"United Utilities said some of its sewage releases into #Windermere were 'potentially non-compliant' but that it #SelfReports 'over 94% of potential pollution incidents to the #EnvironmentAgency'.
"Matt Staniek, a campaigner against sewage pollution and founder of #SaveWindermere, said Windermere was 'the jewel in the crown of the #LakeDistrict #NationalPark, and it's being used as an open sewer'.
"It is sometimes necessary to release sewage into rivers and lakes to stop the wastewater system from being overwhelmed by #HeavyRain but this #pollution can damage the environment, causing harmful #AlgalBlooms and even killing fish.
"In January this year - after BBC Panorama revealed the company had downplayed the severity of dozens of #pollution incidents, some involving Windermere - United Utilities retrospectively reported some discharges into the lake from October 2023 onwards."

In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court has found that United Utilities can be held to account for the damage caused by sewage discharges.
The ruling has set a watershed precedent which now breaks the shield around polluting water companies – leaving them open to a potential deluge of legal action.

May 15, 2024"Millions of litres of #RawSewage were illegally pumped into one of England's most famous lakes after a fault, the BBC can reveal.
"#UnitedUtilities failed to stop the illegal #pollution of Windermere, in the #LakeDistrict, for 10 hours in February and did not report the incident to the Environment Agency until 13 hours after it started.
"An almost identical incident occurred at the same location in 2022.
"The firm says it took urgent steps to resolve the incident in February.
"A pumping station in Bowness-on-Windermere, in Cumbria, normally sends sewage to Windermere Wastewater Treatment Works.
"But United Utilities documents, obtained by the BBC, show how a telecoms fault on the night of 28 February caused the main pumps to stop.
"A separate set of emergency pumps then discharged untreated sewage into the middle of Windermere, which is part of a Unesco World Heritage site.
"It is England's largest lake and one of the country's most popular natural attractions."

Meanwhile in the #LakeDistrict it transpires that #UnitedUtilities have found a cheap way of dealing with the #sewage crisis... they just downgrade the #pollution notifications knowing the Environmental Agency would sign off on the downgrades with no site visits.
Not sure if its the result of #austerity, institutional indifference or corruption... or perhaps all three.
But whatever it is, there #LibDems are right, a criminal investigation is required!
