At the end of my two years with him, at the end of my senior year, I gave him a heartfelt letter quoting Richard Feynman, and he wrote me back a one-page letter I still keep treasured today, referencing e.e. cummings.
In college, I had a professor who took me under his wing, Prof. Kaiser, as I started falling in love with the history of science (and eventually double majored in it). He mentored me, gave me a job as a research assistant, made me feel valued and like I had potential, and was just so so kind. I put him on a pedestal too (at one point after a few years working together, he asked me to call him Dave but I told him I couldn't!). He definitely worked to forge a relationship with me (and we are still in contact to this day).
In my current school, I have so many teacher friends who inspire me and keep me pushing to continue teaching, improve my practice, and keep me sane. One was my teacher mentor, a chemistry teacher, who just left the classroom at the end of class year. She and I co-advised. I started in my school 16 years ago and it was my first formal teaching job. The best advice I ever got early on in my teaching career was "be clear, consistent, and fair." And I took that to heart... my early career teaching north star. Over the years, we became good friends, and she's now one of my best friends. It's going to be so weird to know she's not going to be teaching anymore.

#TeacherCrush #ClassroomMath #prompt9 (1/n)
As might be expected for someone who decided they were going to be a teacher early on in their lives and didn't really deviate from that goal, I had a lot of teachers who meant a lot to me. I blocked out all of Junior High (because it was so traumatic, as I assume it was for everyone)! But in high school I had three teachers that I took multiple classes with -- Mr. Keil (math), Mr. Schmidt (history), and Mr. Parent (English). All really showed me what a "life of the mind" could look like, and I think ultimately their passion and intellectualism drew me to them more than anything specific to their teaching. Unlike at my school, where teachers and students tend to have more personal relationships, I was never close with my teachers... I put them on a pedestal from a distance.
One thing that I do remember pedagogically about Mr. Parent is that we wrote essays for him. And they were marked up intensively and thoughtfully. And he always wrote three checkmarks at the top of the essay. I asked him why. He said he read them three times, because he knew how much time we spent on them, and so he wanted to make sure he was giving them justice, and also wasn't grading just based on his mood. I'll never forget how much he cared about his craft.

#TeacherCrush #ClassroomMath #prompt9
Today’s prompt, math teachers, is about uplifting those that brought us into the classroom, and that sustains us in our schools. I have a terrible memory but I still remember three teachers from high school and one professor from college that had a huge impact on my decision to becoming a teacher. And I have so many colleagues who I love dearly who keep me sustained. So with that, here you go!
1. Who is a teacher that you had that meant a lot to you? What do you remember about them?
2. Who is a teacher colleague that you have currently that means a lot to you? Why?

#ClassroomMath #Prompt2I was selected to be part of the 1994 TIMSS video study for 8th grade math. I was teaching in a wonderful, public, middle school in Spanish Harlem, NYC named Academy of Environmental Science. I was also in graduate school at Bank St. College and I loved Marilyn Burns' books. I adapted one of the lessons for the video. My implementation was not great and it was not an effective lesson. They gave me a VCR tape of the lesson. Fast forward twenty-some years later, I am now a math teacher educator working with preservice teachers. I had the tape digitized, add it to my LMS and show it in my methods courses so students can see a lesson, hear my reflection, and revise it to make it a high-cognitive demand task. Plus, it allows students to give "the teacher" feedback as we practice "Post-Lesson Discussion" one of our Lesson Study phases. They will teach a "Math for Elementary Teachers" lesson later during the semester using an adapted Lesson Study protocol.

Spy Classroom (Episode 1):
This first episode can only be described as underwhelming. Thought it would be more exciting, and It got a bit better at the end, but not by much.
Unsure if I will watch episode 2, so maybe I'll just check out the light novel one day instead.
