  1. A magical morning at the lake this morning: cool, clear water, friends, a terrapin and a pair of kingfisher.

  2. This is the lake where I swim. We have lifeguards and must swim with tow floats at all times within set times and set boundaries. This happened outside of one of the lifeguarded sessions, and it’s a reminder how dangerous cold water can be, even on a hot day (and it’s especially dangerous at this time of year. Even experienced swimmers get caught out as the water warms, but is still objectively chilly).

    What a tragedy.

  3. The triathletes will be back soon, bringing their wetsuits and loud talk about the latest super endurance events. They’re welcome, of course, it’s just a bit of a change of pace from the ladies with bobble hats whose company I’ve enjoyed enormously again over winter.

  4. And if you could hear what I was saying, dear reader, it was something like, “what bullshit is this?” … as the waves slapped me in the face. It was sunny last week, FFS.

  5. Lovely #swim this morning. The lake is suddenly over 9 degrees, but still clear and crisp. An hour setting the world to rights in the #sauna was excellent too

  6. I picked up my Shiver Squad badge for winter swims this morning. A brisk 5.3 degrees this morning. Brrr!🥶

  7. Article: Can I drink Non-Alcholic Beer at Work?

    This is an interesting one. Most of these beers have less alcohol than a ripe banana, but there are strong social elements at play here. I sometimes have an NA beer with my lunch, but I work at home.... so it's not quite the same as cracking one open in a meeting at the office, is it? Beer with no alcohol is just a hydrating isotonic beverage, isn't it?

  8. Very sad news. The courage this guy showed in the face of an awful condition was truly inspirational.

    RIP Rob Burrow. Your legacy will live on and continue to help and inspire others.

  9. Another splendid End of the Road festival with my girl. My Wyld Stallyns t-shirt was the winner this year. I received my first compliment on it from a passer-by before I’d even left my tent. Know your audience, I guess.

    Musical highlight: SLIFT
    Food highlight: Persian kebab.
    Drink highlight: Burrow Hill cider from the cider bus.
    Quiz highlight: the absurdly difficult one on Sunday.

    Accessible camping was spot on as always. Same again next year?

  10. I’m off to the End of the Road festival this weekend. My dance card is pretty clear at the moment. Wise music people of Mastodon…any tips or suggestions about who I should be checking out?

  15. I’ve accidentally added a fennel tea bag to the liquorice one that was already in my flask. It’s worked quite well, TBH.

  17. When asked how his morning was going at the showers in Accessible camping at #EOTR on Saturday morning, one chap with a walking frame thought for a moment and then replied, “well, I’m the right side of the grass”. I can’t stop thinking about this.

  18. At #EOTR this weekend, I was struck by how many non-binary and/or LGBTQ+ people there were in the audience. Sometimes, just occasionally, you get a glimpse of a happier, more tolerant society. Then you come back into the world and get slapped around the face by the Suella Bravermans of the world.

  19. As well as Scott Levine (who was 1st on at the relatively small Folly tent on Saturday, showing just how strong the bill was), King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard were extraordinary. Other highlights included Greentea Peng, Angel Olsen, Arooj Aftab, Lee Fields, Charlotte Adigery & Bolis Popul, Fatoumata Diawara, Wet Leg, Deerhoof and Bodega.

    It’s a really fantastic festival.

  20. Just back from a(nother) glorious weekend at the End of the Road festival. Splendid weather and a bill that may have lacked big names at first glance but had quality from top to bottom. My favourite act was Scott Lavene, but we didn’t see a duff act all weekend. Accessible camping was also first rate and Tanya and the team went out of their way to make sure everyone felt welcome. Such a great festival. After 13 Glastonburys up to 2017, I’ve seen the small festival light

  21. Listening to #bbc #Radio5Live and they just took all 40 minutes of that #Trump speech uninterrupted. No fact checks, no nothing. On the one hand, the media all too often does him a favour by editing him to make him sound vaguely coherent. On the other hand, who here needs to hear that deluge of nonsense? He was talking about people “literally” being crucified at one point. How many other felons get this sort of a platform?

  22. CW: Poetry. Themes of suicide. Darkly humorous.

    I keep coming back to the pitch black humour of Dorothy Parker’s poetry.

    Here’s Resumé

    Razors pain you;
    Rivers are damp;
    Acids stain you;
    And drugs cause cramp.
    Guns aren’t lawful;
    Nooses give;
    Gas smells awful;
    You might as well live.

  28. I’m afraid I don’t remember who recommended this podcast on here, but it’s the most extraordinary and interesting thing I think I’ve ever heard. Do yourself a favour and treat yourself to 60 minutes wandering through mental health, Edinburgh (and Irish) chip shops, Vermeer, the history of brown sauce, how the french band Cortex are the brown sauce of music, cats and door knobs. It’s quite the ride.

    (And thank you for the tip, fellow Mastodonian!)
