  1. 2/2

    ¹ As in for example disability
    ² Which might already be happening anyway

    I've noticed that some people can be unkind to those who did not add an alt text.

    Some people don't know about it, some might not be able to, staying constructive & friendly is the best way to achieve more #alttexts :)

  2. Now this is interesting. It may be that #eczema causes #PeanutAllergy , instead of peanut allergy causing eczema.

  3. Every time we go to the farmer's market we get something from a brand called #McCutcheon's. They never miss with flavor, this BBQ is GOOD! We'll have to try some of the pizza sauce next time too.

  4. The survey for my partner's PhD research on #AutisticInertia has already done quite well, although there have been no new responses in the last couple of weeks.

    It closes at the end of tomorrow (31st March), so if you would like to contribute your experiences to this research, here's your chance; click the link to get started! qualtrics.manchester.ac.uk/jfe

  9. Many new people think Mastodon is too complicated. I think that's in part because some of its jargon is obscure.

    "Server" = site
    "Instance" = site
    "Federation" = network
    "Fediverse" = network (fancier term)
    "Defederate" = block (a site)
    "Toot" = post
    "Boost" = repost

    The "Fediverse" is a bunch of websites, running various software, talking to each other using a common protocol – as with email.

    Much "complexity" can be fixed by speaking plain English.

  14. #Bacteria that end up inside of host cells for a long time (aka #endosymbionts) lose a lot of genes. In some cases these tiny #genomes can become unstable. One spectacular case of this is in cicadas. @noahspencer looked at what happens to #transcription of endosymbiont genes as their genomes erode and the dosage of genes becomes unbalanced. Here is a preprint showing what he found. Short version: these bacteria have almost completely lost control of their transcription!

  15. "Barbie girl" - Aqua

    Won the NME Brat Award for Worst Single of the year, which just shows how little NME readers knew then. Or now.

    Back at Smash Hits, Dr "Neil" Fox won Best DJ, Paul Nicholls and Martine McCutcheon the acting gongs, Lily Savage the best comedy, and Men in Black the best film.

    Had Smash Hits lived, I reckon "Barbie The Move" would have won its year. Easily.

  18. Took a peek at ex-Twitter because I sometimes like to watch a train wreck. It's a weakness of mine.

    It's such a ghost town now. Followers are meaningless because everyone sensible has left. I posted one last Autscape announcement on the account there. 1779 followers and nil engagement.

    What I don't understand is why quite a lot of people who should know better still hang on to it. They're only helping to legitimise #Musk and his meddling.
