  1. I've been reconsidering whether I should get crash bars for the Honda CRF300 Rally, but I don't think they'd have helped in this case. They might even have made things worse.

    The rocks that the bike slid on were brutal, big, and pointy. They ripped off about 8 plastic lugs, three screws, about 6 Xmas tree plugs, snapped two plastics, and cracked two.

    These fairings are made to tear up in a slide, but I worry crash bars could've snagged and bent the frame.

  2. Just epoxied most of my Honda CRF300 Rally fairings back together. I'll have a bit more to do tomorrow. Then after 24 hours of curing, I should be able to put to start riding again. 🏍️

    Here's what's broken:

    * COWL ASSY., L. MIDDLE (64400-K1T-E10ZA)
    * COVER SET, L. SIDE (83600-K1T-E10ZA)
    * SHROUD SET, L. FR. (19090-K1T-E10ZA)
    * SHROUD L,RR, CRF250RL(H)-TH (19045-KZZ-J00ZA)
    * FENDER SET B, RR. (80150-K1T-305)

    Total value: $437 AUD + $197 postage. Ouch.

  3. Doom metal band Cirith Ungol have announced that they will be retiring from live tours, with their final concerts to be held in 2024.

    These guys are one of my favourite bands. Here's hoping they come to Australia. I'm not sure they've ever toured here before. 🤞🏻

  4. Finally watched Masters of the Universe, the 1987 He-Man movie.

    Not a bad movie exactly, just a bit mediocre. Great costumes, decent sets and acting. Dolph Lundgren is pretty good. I found it kind of boring though, as far as Cannon Films go. Nowhere near as entertaining as the Barbarians.

  5. I finally saw Battlefield Earth for the first time.

    What a movie! I thought it couldn't possibly be as bad as everyone said, but it's true.

    It's visually interesting - decent character designs, sets, and CGI. Too much blue light, if anything.

    Everything else is *atrocious*. The acting is hilariously bad, and complimented by a truly awful script.

    I can't believe $45 million USD was spent on this train wreck.

    Very enjoyable.

  6. Has anyone tried Garmin InReach for SMS messaging and (just in case) emergency help?

    I've been thinking about getting one for motorcycle adventure riding since I discovered I get absolutely no cell reception in some remote areas. God forbid I should stack it in the middle of nowhere without cell reception, I wouldn't be able to call for help. 😬

    Seems like the InReach would solve that. It's not cheap, but better than being stuck.

  7. I see now why the Honda CRF300 Rally suspension is considered so soft.

    It's perfect for me for road riding, and I had never bottomed it out before, even loaded with all my camping gear.

    But riding through those massive potholes, rocks, and ruts today was a different story and I was bottoming it out regularly.

    I might need to work on my skills, or upgrade the suspension if I want to do roads like this regularly.

  8. This place is amazing. I found hundreds of kilometres of quiet, corrugated gravel roads. Exploring them might be the highlight of this trip. Lots of cattle farms and properties out here.

    Brown gravel, blue gravel, and the reddest dirt I've ever seen in my life. It's all here.

    The Honda CRF300 Rally takes the corrugations like a champ. Barely even feel them. It's perfect for exploring out here. Couldn't have bought a better bike. 10/10.

  9. Time to pack up the tent. Today I'm travelling to a different area, and staying in accommodation.

  10. Time for bed. I'm camping at my destination. It's only 8pm, but been a long day and there isn't much to do here at night, so I'll get up early to explore.

    Getting here was an adventure. Extremely windy, then I got rained on for about 30 km, but the sun soon came out again.

    Managed to drop my bike manoeuvring around the camp site. I had to remove all my luggage, but I successfully pulled it back up again using the proper technique. 💪🏻

    Been an awesome day.

  11. The Honda CRF300 Rally is pretty comfy on the highway - at least, compared to the Grom.

    It's only after about three hours of riding that the stock seat is starting to get sore, but it's long enough that there's plenty of room for different positions.

    I was worried the suspension would bottom out with all the luggage I'm carrying, but so far the luggage hasn't had any noticeable effect on the suspension or handling of the bike.

    Nearly at my destination.

  12. Kicking off my first road trip on the Honda CRF300 Rally!

  13. I've got a little road trip planned soon, so I installed a Quad Lock USB charger on the Honda CRF300 Rally.

    It was a lot easier than I expected. I should probably zip tie the cable down more, but there were enough loops, hooks, and holes to thread it through that I'm confident it won't fall loose.

    Now I can keep my phone charged on the road! 🏍️

  14. Just bought a ticket to see King Dude live in Fitzroy in November!

    Always wanted to see him live, and it sounds like this might be the last time he visits Australia as 'King Dude'.

  15. I removed the OEM handguards from my Honda CRF300 Rally and installed a set of adjustable Zeta levers (model ZE44-5011). They're looking great, but I can't shake the feeling I should've got them in red.

    The brake lever is now *much* easier to reach and more comfortable to use. I can't adjust the clutch lever as much as I'd like without causing disengagement issues, but it's still an improvement.

    Don't mind the damaged sticker; the dealership did that. 🤣

  16. After a week of wrangling ASP.NET Web Forms and onboarding a new developer at a client, I'm glad the weekend is here. 🎉

    I feel like I have to remind myself how Web Forms works every time I go back to use it. It's like jumping into a time machine and realising you don't have access to the last 15+ years worth of innovations. Especially as this project uses VB.NET.

  21. Did a test packing of some of my camp gear on the Honda CRF300 Rally. Now that I've replaced my old, oversized sleeping pad, I can fit my new sleeping pad, pillow, sleeping bag, and stove - with room to spare. The tent straps on top of the panniers.

    My old tent has more interior room than I remember. Might be just enough to comfortably store some gear while I sleep, so I'll try motocamping with it at least once before deciding whether to replace it.

  22. Got the Honda CRF300 Rally back from its 1,000 km break-in service. Now it's ready for an adventure!

    Next weekend I reckon I'll try packing all my camp gear to see how well it fits, then try a test camp at home and see how it all works together. Got a feeling I'll need a new tent - my old bivvy probably isn't going to have enough room.

    I already replaced my sleeping pad. The new one packs into half the length and diameter while also being much comfier.

  23. Just installed a rear rack on the Honda CRF300 Rally. Heavy duty, from B&B Offroad Engineering right here in Australia. 🦘

  24. Finally took the Honda CRF300 Rally down a small dirt track, including a little bit of mud.

    The soft suspension is super comfortable, even on roads that were brutal for the Grom.

    Feeling the back end slide through mud is a bit disconcerting.

    Of course, I dropped the bike again - without breaking anything this time.

    I keep underestimating how heavy that Rally is for a "light" adventure bike. My lifting technique must be wrong. 🤔

  25. Finally dropped the Honda CRF300 Rally - onto rough concrete when I came to a stop without straightening the bars. 😅

    * Broke the tip off the brake lever.
    * Bent the brake pedal (easily bent back into place).
    * Scuffed the right fairing, hand guard, and mirror.
    * Knocked the right bar end into the handlebar, at a lopsided angle.

    Nothing serious. I think it's time I got some Bark Busters though. Maybe an engine guard too. 🤔

  26. One of the surprising things about the CRF300 Rally is how good it feels to be seated so high. The Grom wasn't low, but the visibility on the Rally is so much better. I can almost see over lifted 4WDs, and I feel like motorists can see me much better. It's a great riding position.

    I can also safely lane filter now. The Grom just didn't have enough torque to out-accelerate a car, but the Rally has plenty. My work commute is now a few minutes shorter. 😁

  27. I've now had the Honda CRF300 Rally for 7 days and 400 km, and I'm absolutely stoked. I definitely picked the right bike for me.

    I've gotten used to the vibes now. I like the way it sounds, rattles, and shakes. It has character.

    The seat is decent. I've gone on 100 km street rides without discomfort.

    The soft suspension is amazing on the road for my weight. This bike can ride over ANYTHING. I don't ever want to go back to short travel suspension again.

  28. First impressions on the Honda CRF300 Rally:

    * Suspension is great on the road. Roads that make the Grom chatter like crazy feel like nothing in the CRF. Potholes just feel like a minor bump. Riding up curbs is easy.
    * It's top-heavy for 150 kg. Need to be careful moving it around.
    * Feels very stable at low speeds, perhaps due to the large tyres and heavier weight.

    Overall, very happy so far. Looking forward to doing a small trip soon.

  29. First impressions on the Honda CRF300 Rally:

    * Sure vibrates a lot more than the Grom. I'll add some Grip Puppies.
    * Seat height isn't as much of a challenge as I expected. I wouldn't want to start out on this bike, but it's very approachable after 1 yr of riding experience.
    * Power is amazing compared to the Grom. No trouble doing 100 km/hr, even uphill.
    * Gets blown around a lot more than the Grom did at 80+ km/hr.

  30. I've had the Honda Grom for 13 months and 6,400 km. It's been a great little bike, but it's time to upgrade. I want to travel and go camping, so I need something that can actually do highway speeds and carry a bit of weight. The Grom just isn't cut out for that.

    So I purchased a new bike today!

    Fingers crossed, it'll get delivered tomorrow. 🤞🏻 Then I'll reveal what I got. 🏍️
