  1. Back home after a couple of days of #motocamping. I think I'll put dual-sport tires and a skid plate on my roadster, and maybe a few other modifications, to make dirt roads more enjoyable. #motorcycles

  2. Hottest June day on record? Let’s go camping! #abr #MotoCamping

  3. Day 3 of my #MotoCamping trip. After the previous days adventures I decided I needed a day to hike rather than ride. Started the day off with a quick ride into town for provisions and then went to Natural Bridge State Park, where I hiked the Original trail up to Balanced Rock and then the Low Gap trail up to the Natural Bridge. Both are considered moderate by the locals, but I think by anyone else's standards they would be better described as reminiscent of the path two hobbits took in order to sneak into Mordor. Complete with stone staircases.

  4. Day two of this year's #MotoCamping trip. Stopped off in Point Pleasant to visit the #mothman statue before heading on over to Kentucky.

  5. First night of my Southern #MotoCamping trip. Camped right on the shore of the Kanawa River just outside of Point Pleasant, WV. Tomorrow morning after breaking camp I'll head into town to visit the #mothman statue and museum, then on to the Red River Gorge.

  6. Getting packed for a week long motorcycle camping trip. I leave tomorrow. This is a much much needed break.

First night I'll be camping in Point Pleasant, WV and visiting the Mothman museum. After that, heading over to the Red River Gorge in Kentucky, then looping down through Tennessee, North Carolina and back into West Virginia where I'm planning to spend a couple of days exploring sites like Audra State Park and Blackwater Falls. I'll be posting photos from the trip here. Also going to be trying out my new action camera to get some POV video.

  7. I have a nine day long break coming up at the end of April / bringing of May. Going to take the motorcycle out on a 1500 mile loop through Appalachia, calling asking the way and hoping to hit some of the famous mountain roads in Tennessee and North Carolina. Getting excited planning this trip. Tentative itinerary:

Day 1: leave from Northeast Ohio, make camp in Point Pleasant, WV where I'll visit the Mothman museum.

Day 2: Point Pleasant to a campground on the banks of the Red River in the Red River Gorge area. Ride through Nada tunnel and tour the gorge.

Day 3: across Kentucky and ride the Kentucky Rattlesnake (KY-192) to the KY/TN border.

Day 4: head south and catch the Cherohala Skyway into Robbinsville, NC. Possibly run the Tail of the Dragon, depending on arrival time.

Day 5: ride the Tail if I didn't get to the previous day. Head east, catch pay off the Blue Ridge Parkway until exciting and riding the Devil's Whip (NC 80).

Day 6: slowly explore the Blue Ridge Parkway, making camp somewhere near the North Carolina / Virginia border.

Day 7: the Virginia leg of the BRP.

Day 8: BRP to Blackwater Falls, WV. Visit several waterfalls in the area for photos and hiking.

Day 9: US 250 through Southern Ohio to New Philadelphia and then home.

This will be the longest loop I've done on the bike and a great chance to test all the tweaks I've made to the camping setup, as I'll be making and breaking camp every day. Super excited to get out there and explore again. Going to do my best to ignore politics and current events that entire nine days and just recharge.

  8. The last morning of my West Virginia #motocamping trip I rode out from Oak Hill to Babcock State Park and spent an hour photographing the Glade Creek Grist Mill before heading back towards Ohio and home. This is one of the most photographed structures in the Eastern US, and while it's always beautiful I knew that the extremely sunny conditions were going to prove challenging when it comes to getting a good exposure. The point, it was going to be really difficult to be able to bring out both highlight and shadow details in a single frame, so an HDR composite can be a good workaround.

Now, I tend to think that overly vivid HDR images have been really badly overdone the past few years, so I try to keep mine as close to the natural color as possible or even to mute the colors somewhat. The fatigue is, if anything, only getting worse as we now have all this AI crap and fancy Lightroom presets that you can buy online to give a color representation that just wasn't actually there. People are noticing of course. I hope that my images come across as more accurate to life.

The first image was as close in color to the baseline image the camera captured as was possible while still pulling out a lot of shadow detail that was lost in the original capture, particularly in the rocks. The second image is the same scene but with muted colors and enhanced local contrast in order to show off the textures. Of the two I prefer the first, but the second definitely has a certain appeal.

    All open source software chain.

    Composite capture, five bracketed images.
    Nikon d3400, Nikkor dx 18-55mm zoom @ 36mm.
    ISO 100, 16x neutral density
    1, 2, 4, 8, and 15 second exposures at f25
Raw images converted to tiff in Darktable
Composite HDR created in Luminance HDR
Levels and sharpness settings applied in Gimp

  10. I think I have these bags pretty well dialed in. This extra mount was totally not necessary but I put it on anyway so I could take these pictures.

  11. Got my new phone mount yesterday for the bike, one more item to knock off the list in preparation for my moto-camping trip in October. I'll probably not use it much, just when I'm in need of GPS.

The two is going to be the third weekend in October, when I'll be riding from Northeast Ohio down to the New River Gorge to hang out at #bridgeday and watch people base jump and rappel off the famous (infamous?) bridge, exploring as many twisty back roads as possible on the way there and back. Considering doing the triple nickel, OH route 555, one of the best rated roads in the Midwest for bikes.

  13. It's season finale time! I saved Burnett county for last, to remind me to upgrade my camping gear this season, because camping to ride is fun!

  14. I didn't end up going motocamping tonight. However, one of the silent motocamping channels I follow has made up for it by releasing a new video!

I'll be camping in my backyard tonight. It's cooled down a little bit, so it should be pleasant.

  15. After reviewing our packing list, I realized we forgot a lot of nice-to-haves, like plates, cutlery, towels, and camping chairs. To my astonishment, it all fits - albeit barely. #motocamping #scooter #girlscouts

  16. Time to pack up the tent. Today I'm travelling to a different area, and staying in accommodation.
