  1. Finally got around to finding the leak in my self-inflating sleeping pad after waking up on the floor at #EMF2026 - it's in an annoying place where I won't be able to fix it, so it's time to start shopping for a new one.
Current favourite is the alpkit dumo, but I'm more than open to recommendations (or anti-recommendations if I'm looking at a rubbish one)

  5. CW: Just got my hands on the Dune 4WD Single Mattress and put it to the test!

Just got my hands on the Dune 4WD Single Mattress and put it to the test!

    In this video, I:
✔️ Unbox it straight out of the packaging
✔️ Show how easy it is to inflate
✔️ Check the firmness and comfort
✔️ Share my honest first impressions

If you’re into 4WD adventures, camping trips, or setting up a comfortable sleep system

    Does it inflate quickly?
    Is it actually comfortable?
    Is it worth the money?

  6. Mosquito netting is a simple way to help Scouts stay comfortable at summer camp. Mosquito bites can itch, hurt, and interrupt sleep. A net creates a barrier around the sleeping area and keeps bugs away. 🦟

Nets work well with tents, cots, or hammocks and do not use chemicals. There are many styles, and some families make their own. Better sleep helps Scouts focus on fun and learning all day. ⛺🙂

  10. Today’s Wordle proved tricky due to an uncommon letter combination, while the NYT Strands puzzle embraced the “Outsiders” theme with a fun camping twist. With “CAMPING GEAR” as the spangram, words like TENT, THERMOS, and LANTERN made for an intuitive and enjoyable solve.

  11. Any kiwis know of a place I can get replacement poles for cheap tents?

Navigator South in particular (this time). Poles are the standard elastic-in-plastic, fold-up jobbies. I just need them the right length, with the right fittings on each end, for the canopy I have (poles it came with are munted).

  13. I'm starting a thread on #HammockCamping...

Feel free to comment and even tell me where I'm wrong, or if there's a better solution.

I'll start with the big one... how many lines/ropes/straps should it take to fully pitch a #HammockTent?

I have a strong bias that the answer is no more than four!

I propose a general "Four Point Hammock Suspension Rule" (two straps for the hammock itself (with bug net), no more than two for the rainfly)

Note that the fly does not need to be diamond shaped, this is a general rule-of-thumb.

My point is: if you have more lines you increase complexity, increase time pitching and repacking, decrease access, and have more things to trip over. 😉

Put another way: If you get the same performance with fewer lines, that is a good thing. 👍

If more lines are required to achieve the same performance, that may indicate a weaker design. 👎

  15. Finally got a chance to use my #hammockgear Circadian Pro - not overnight, just an afternoon hang.

I'm very happy with it from that limited trial - The hammock itself is almost scary lightweight, if it weren't for the high reputation of hammockgear and their products, I'd be worried about it's longevity.

Hanging it was dead simple, the included tree straps made it easy to hang without damaging the trees I used, and it was incredibly comfortable to hang in for hours

Excited to got my quilts in and take it on a proper overnighter!

  18. CW: camping gear, food

#campingGear I have this woodstove, it's based on the tin can cookers that the US "hobos" used.
I used it (but in a very safe place, far from the forest, on a stone surface) to make tea in the morning, and I love this thing. I guess it's hard to cook a menu on it, because it's so hard to regulate the flames, if not impossible - but it's a great feeling to be able to easily cook with just some leaves and twigs.

it's totally #zerowaste cooking. but not zero emissions, lol
