What principal AI haters will never admit is the tremendous value it brings to ordinary people on a daily basis.
My take on it is that it mainly fills in the gap of decades of bad software, bad UX and bad understanding of user's needs.
I wanted to get an idea of the overall trip coverage reported by Garmin InReach. For some reason each new start generates new track. UI does not allow stats. ChatGPT to the rescue!

Garmin zaprezentował najnowszą odsłonę swojej flagowej serii zegarków outdoorowych, fēnix 8 Pro.
Nowe modele wprowadzają dwie interesujące innowacje: po raz pierwszy w historii smartwatchy marki zintegrowano w nich technologię komunikacji satelitarnej inReach, a wariant premium oferuje rewolucyjny wyświetlacz MicroLED (ta wersja jest na zdjęciu powyżej). To krok, który ma zapewnić sportowcom i podróżnikom jeszcze większą niezależność od telefonu.
Najważniejszą nowością w serii fēnix 8 Pro jest wbudowana technologia inReach, która zapewnia łączność zarówno satelitarną, jak i komórkową (LTE). Dzięki temu użytkownicy mogą pozostawić smartfon w domu i wciąż mieć dostęp do kluczowych funkcji komunikacyjnych. Zegarek umożliwia prowadzenie dwustronnej komunikacji tekstowej z użytkownikami aplikacji Garmin Messenger, wysyłanie meldunków z aktualną lokalizacją, a po połączeniu z siecią LTE także wykonywanie połączeń głosowych i wysyłanie 30-sekundowych wiadomości głosowych bezpośrednio z nadgarstka. Funkcjonalność ta wymaga aktywnej subskrypcji.
Bezpieczeństwo w terenie na nowym poziomie
Integracja z technologią inReach oznacza również dostęp do zaawansowanej funkcji SOS. Po jej aktywowaniu zegarek wysyła sygnał alarmowy do całodobowego centrum Garmin Response.
Wykwalifikowany zespół koordynatorów nawiązuje kontakt z użytkownikiem, jego kontaktami alarmowymi oraz lokalnymi służbami ratunkowymi, a następnie monitoruje całą akcję aż do jej zakończenia. To rozwiązanie, które znacząco podnosi poziom bezpieczeństwa podczas samotnych wypraw w tereny bez zasięgu sieci komórkowej.
Pierwszy taki ekran w smartwatchu
Drugim filarem premierowej serii jest wprowadzenie modelu fēnix 8 Pro – MicroLED. Jest to pierwszy smartwatch na rynku wyposażony w tę technologię. Wyświetlacz składa się z ponad 400 000 pojedynczych diod LED, które zapewniają jasność na poziomie 4500 nitów, co czyni go najjaśniejszym ekranem w historii zegarków. Według producenta, zapewnia to doskonałą czytelność, bogate kolory i szerokie kąty widzenia nawet w pełnym słońcu. Obok wersji MicroLED, w ofercie pozostaje także wariant z ekranem AMOLED.

Cena i dostępność
Nowe zegarki trafią do sprzedaży 8 września 2025 roku. Model fēnix 8 Pro – AMOLED będzie dostępny w rozmiarach 47 mm i 51 mm, a jego sugerowana cena detaliczna to 5 589 zł. Wersja 51 mm ma oferować do 27 dni pracy na baterii w trybie smartwatcha. Z kolei fēnix 8 Pro – MicroLED, dostępny tylko w rozmiarze 51 mm, został wyceniony na 8 599 zł, a jego czas pracy na baterii szacowany jest na 10 dni.

I have a question about the subscription part: can you pay only for the months in which you need the device, or do you have to keep paying once the subscription is activated?
And if you stop paying and want to restart paying, do you have to pay the activation cost again? -

Garmin has restructured the InReach plans.

Annual plans are gone. Monthly plans retain their prices while offering more features (e.g. more text messages).
What's the catch? Plans can no longer be suspended. You can either cancel (and be subject to an expensive reactivation fee when you resubscribe), or drop to the cheap, new pay-as-you-go Enabled plan.
Overall, seems like a win for me personally.

I've had some time to take the Garmin InReach Mini 2 out for a bit of a spin, mostly just using it as a regular GPS to track my motorcycle rides.
One of the unexpectedly fantastic features is that it can automatically synchronise waypoints and recorded tracks to and from the Garmin Explore app on my phone. From there, I can also export them to GPX format and use them in any other app.
This is *significantly* better than transferring to/from my old GPSMap 64s over Mini USB.

My Garmin InReach Mini 2 arrived.
Initial impressions are really positive. It's solid, compact, and light. Perfect for clipping to your gear with the included carabiner (couldn't do that with my GPSMap 64s).
At this stage, my only complaint is that the buttons are hard to press and their positions make it awkward to use with one hand - but I suppose that's the trade-off for small size. It's no substitute for a regular GPS, and it's not supposed to be.

After looking over the competitors available here in Aus, and PLBs, I settled on the InReach Mini 2. It's expensive, but I like the compact size and features. Compared to a PLB, I want to have the option of contacting family to come get me in a non-emergency situation, like a bike breakdown outside of cell reception.
Should be good. Soon I'll be able to hit the 4WD trails alone for some practice.

Has anyone tried Garmin InReach for SMS messaging and (just in case) emergency help?
I've been thinking about getting one for motorcycle adventure riding since I discovered I get absolutely no cell reception in some remote areas. God forbid I should stack it in the middle of nowhere without cell reception, I wouldn't be able to call for help. 😬
Seems like the InReach would solve that. It's not cheap, but better than being stuck.
