I see this Rambo film was co-produced by Nu Image (later Millennium), which was a partner/"successor" to Cannon FIlms (where a lot of people went to after Cannon went bust). They even made a mockbuster of Stallone's Cliffhanger, 'Freefall' starring Eric Roberts.

Luigi Cozzi's Hercules from 1983 is bonkers. I don't think there are enough words to cover its bonkers nature. It's a fun bad movie. Lou Ferrigno goes hard. He tosses a bear into space. Everything looks real bad. It's an all-timer bad flick.

Is there any horror sequel more interesting than The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2? I doubt it. It's a large departure from the original that makes it a target of detractors but also sets the stage for pretty much what to expect for the rest of the franchise's history.

Another movie I have a great deal of fondness for despite it being actually pretty bad is the Chuck Norris/Lou Gossett, Jr. comedy action vehicle Firewalker. Admittedly, pretty much all my affection comes from childhood nostalgia for these types of cable TV wonders.

Sinbad of the Seven Seas is a 1989 Cannon Films adventure fantasy with such a troubled production history you’d expect it to be a trainwreck. In fact it’s magnificent. It makes very little sense but it’s crazy fun from start to finish.

Finally watched Masters of the Universe, the 1987 He-Man movie.
Not a bad movie exactly, just a bit mediocre. Great costumes, decent sets and acting. Dolph Lundgren is pretty good. I found it kind of boring though, as far as Cannon Films go. Nowhere near as entertaining as the Barbarians.

Zapowiadałem, zapowiadałem i w końcu słowo cyfrą się stało. Na youtube'owym kanale Pora Imperatora wylądowała właśnie nasza rozmowa o filmie "Cyborg" z 1989 roku w reżyserii Alberta Pyuna.
Przegadaliśmy ponad dwie godziny, zbliżając się do zdublowania czasu projekcji "Cyborga" (który w wersji kinowej trwa 86 minut), ale było sporo rzeczy do omówienia, między innymi w kontekście produkcji tego filmu i wczesnych pomysłów na to, czym miał być.
Zachęcam do rzucenia okiem i uchem.
Na początku trochę bebłam, ale nie zrażajcie się tym – później jest lepiej, a rozmówcy podnoszą poziom rozmowy.

We wtorek rozmawialiśmy z ekipą Pory Imperatora o filmie "Cyborg" (1989, Albert Pyun) – jeśli wszystko pójdzie zgodnie z planem, nagranie ze spotkania powinno pojawić się na YouTube'ie jeszcze w tym tygodniu, najpóźniej w przyszłym.
Było to sympatyczne doświadczenie, czego nie mógł powiedzieć Albert Pyun o pracy na planie "Cyborga". Pod koniec był już tak zmęczony, że nim jeszcze ukończono montaż filmu postanowił zrobić na boku i na prędkości inny. A wykorzystał w tym celu fakt, że musiał zrobić dokrętki do "Cyborga".
Jeśli znacie ten film, to pewnie pamiętacie, że finałowy pojedynek między głównym bohaterem i demonicznym szwarccharakterem ma dwa etapy – najpierw naparzają się w deszczu, później zaś w opuszczonym budynku. W międzyczasie pozornie zgładzony przez bohatera złol podnosi się – niczym morderca ze slashera – i naciera ze wzmożoną siłą.
W pierwotnym zamyśle Pyuna, który nie tylko wyreżyserował film, ale i napisał do niego scenariusz, starcie to wyglądało inaczej – szwarccharakter umierał w kałuży – nie wstawał z niej, a mordobicie nie przenosiło się do budynku. Producenci filmu i wcielający się w główną rolę Jean-Claude Van Damme uznali jednak, że finałowy pojedynek jest zbyt krótki i zbyt mało widowiskowy, należy go więc rozszerzyć. Pyunowi nakazano zrobienie dokrętek, co ten uczynił. Wykorzystał jednak tę okazję, by zrealizować film "Deceit".
Pyun wybrał na dokrętki lokację, którą mógł później wykorzystać na potrzeby własnego – skromnego – filmu. Na tym jednak robienie filmu na marginesie – czy raczej: na plecach – "Cyborga" się nie skończyło. Miał bowiem zamiar użyć sprzętu (kamer, oświetlenia itp.) wypożyczonego do realizacji dokrętek. Bo wiecie – wbrew temu, co sądził Tommy Wiseau, przymierzając się do nakręcenia "The Room" (1995), profesjonalne ekipy filmowe nie kupują sprzętu, tylko go wypożyczają od zajmujących się tym firm.
Pyun miał plan, by ukończyć dokrętki przed weekendem, ponieważ sprzęt był wypożyczony do poniedziałku, dzięki czemu miałby jeszcze chwilę, by na sprzęcie i w lokacjach opłaconych przez producenta "Cyborga" machnąć zdjęcia do "Deceit". I plan ten udało mu się zrealizować – dokrętki zakończono w czwartek, a od piątku do niedzieli jego ekipa zarejestrowała materiał do "Deceit".
Jeśli więc kiedyś zdarzyło Wam się obejrzeć "Deceit" i zaświtała Wam w głowach myśl, że skądś znacie miejsce, w którym rozgrywa się akcja lwiej części tego filmu, to znacie je z "Cyborga".

W lipcu 1989 roku ukazał się debiutancki singiel zespołu Kaoma o tytule "Lambada". Cieszył się on ogromnym powodzeniem poza Ameryką Południową, zwłaszcza w Europie, gdzie w wielu krajach dotarł na szczyt list przebojów, co przełożyło się na krótkotrwałą światową popularność tańca, od którego utwór wziął nazwę.
Skłoniło to kilku producentów z różnych zakątków globu do próby kapitalizacji fenomenu lambady, póki jeszcze trwał. W USA na ten pomysł wpadł spec od reklamy Richard L. Albert i zainteresował nim Menahema Golan z The Cannon Group, z którym regularnie współpracował.
Golan uznał to za świetny pomysł i zaczął planować produkcję filmu o "zakazanym tańcu", jak zwano lambadę. Tak się jednak złożyło, że nieco później rozstał się ze swoim kuzynem i wieloletnim partnerem biznesowym, Yoramem Globusem – opuścił przechodzącą wówczas proces drastycznej reorganizacji The Cannon Group, przejmując w ramach rekompensaty należąca wcześniej do grupy firmę produkcyjno-dystrybucyjną 21st Century Film Croporation.
Rozstanie nie odbyło się w przyjaznej atmosferze. Ponadto Globus uznał, że nie ma powodów ku temu, by to nie on miał uszczknąć nieco z tortu popularności (w USA jeszcze antycypowanej) lambady. Wskutek tego Cannon Productions i 21st Century Film Corporation rozpoczęły wyścig o to, która firma prędzej wprowadzi na ekrany film o lambadzie.
Oba przedsiębiorstwa miały w swych rękach poważne atuty. Globus i Cannon Productions przystąpili do realizacji filmu nieco wcześniej, zarejestrowali też w Motion Pictures Association of America tytuł "Lambada", uniemożliwiając jego użycie Golanowi. Ten jednak z kolei wykupił ekskluzywne prawa do wykorzystania w filmie utworu "Lambada" zespołu Keoma.
Oba filmy miały premierę tego samego dnia – 16 marca 1990 roku. Dzieło Cannon Pictures nosiło tytuł "Lambada". Golan musiał zadowolić się tytułem "Zakazany taniec" ("The Forbidden Dance").
Nie przeszkodziło mu to jednak w tym, by w promocji jego filmu przywoływać słowo "lambada" – na materiałach promocyjnych tej produkcji pojawiały się różne warianty hasła głoszącego, że zakazany taniec to lambada ("The Forbidden Dance... is Lambada", "Lambada is... The Forbidden Dance" itp.), a na części z nich człon z nazwą tańca był graficznie bardziej wyeksponowany od właściwego tytułu "Forbidden Dance".
Nie będzie pewnie dla Was niespodzianką, że kapitalizowanie nie do końca zaistniałego na gruncie amerykańskim szału na lambadę przez dwa filmy na temat tego tańca, do tego wprowadzone do kin tego samego dnia, obiło się czkawką obu producentom– żaden z filmów nie okazał się komercyjnym sukcesom. Krytyce pozostało ustalenie, który z nich jest lepszy, co nierzadko robiono w ramach tego samego tekstu, recenzując oba filmy jednocześnie.
