El actor falleció a la edad de 89 años mientras dormía
Ha sido un titán de la actuación, una leyenda entre los cineastas indies en EE UU —para quienes, además, impulsó el Instituto y el festival de Sundance (bautizado así por su personaje de Dos hombres y un destino)—, un faro para los demócratas y un activista volcado en los temas sociales y ecológicos. Con la muerte de Robert Redford no se ha ido uno, sino todos los Redford que han existido en diferentes campos en Estados Unidos. Y por cierto, también desaparece un opositor furibundo al presidente Trump.
Redford ha muerto este martes por la mañana a los 89 años en su casa de Provo, en Utah, según ha informado el diario estadounidense The New York Times. Al diario se lo ha anunciado Cindi Berger, directiva de la firma de publicistas Rogers & Cowan PMK, que ha explicado que ha fallecido mientras dormía, pero no ha señalado la causa del óbito.Más información
El intérprete protagonizó películas como Todos los hombres del presidente, Dos hombres y un destino o El golpe, y recibió un premio Oscar a la mejor dirección por Gente corriente. Su última aparición en el cine, sin embargo, fue en un filme de gran presupuesto, Vengadores: Endgame (2018), aunque, posteriormente, tras la pandemia, puso su voz al servicio de dos proyectos más.
Ni siquiera él mismo confiaba en una carrera tan larga y de tanto éxito. A este periodista le confesó que le atraía en demasía en su juventud la vida hippie. Por dos veces decidió quemar las naves en sus inicios: una al morir su madre, y la segunda fue en 1966, cuando con su esposa y sus hijos se mudó al sur de España, a Málaga y Mijas, a pesar de que ya había logrado cierto nombre en Broadway y dejado huella en el cine, en cuatro películas. “Lo tenía claro, no les gustaba. Es que yo quería ser pintor. Me llevó un tiempo aceptar que esa pasión se convertiría en mi hobby y que la interpretación pasaría a primer plano”, recordaba. “¿Y sabes cuándo pasó? Me llamaron para protagonizar Descalzos en el parque, y volví a casa». Nunca más dudó de su valía. Y como muchos actores, anunció en un par de veces su retirada para retornar posteriormente al cine. En 2018, aseguró a EL PAÍS en el estreno de The Old Man & The Gun: “Me gustaría ser recordado por todo el trabajo en televisión, en cine, en teatro. Y por mi labor medioambiental”.
Redford luchó toda su vida contra su evidente belleza, contra su aspecto de chico sano californiano. Fue una estrella, de las más conocidas y con mayor peso y prestigio del cine; sin embargo, buscó proyectos interpretativos distintos, se puso al servicio de películas que fueran más allá del mero entretenimiento. “Para mí lo más importante es la historia”, explicaba en esa entrevista en EL PAÍS. “Eso es lo primero. A lo largo de mi carrera he desarrollado una estrategia de tres pasos. El primero, la historia. Segundo, el personaje. Y el tercero, la emoción. Lo que ha ido ocurriendo en este tiempo es que la fascinación por los efectos especiales, por las explosiones, por la acción, ha dejado de lado la historia. Y eso para mí es extremadamente importante. ¿Acaso existe frase más evocadora que el ‘érase una vez’ con el que empiezan todas?”.
Charles Robert Redford junior nació en Santa Mónica en 1936 y se crio en el valle de San Fernando. Cuando él tenía 18 años, su madre murió de una enfermedad de la sangre, y Redford, apasionado de la pintura, se mudó a Europa con ínfulas de ser un bohemio en su primera huida, abandonando los estudios y finalmente malviviendo en Francia (estudió en la École des Beaux-Arts, de París) e Italia desde 1955. En 1957 retornó a California. “De niño tenía los dientes muy grandes, el pelo demasiado rojizo y muy salvaje y la cara llena de pecas. Lo del físico llegó mucho más tarde y me sorprendió. No estaba preparado para ello”.
A su vuelta, se matriculó en otra escuela de arte, pensando más en dedicarse al diseño de vestuarios. Tras casarse con Lola van Wagenen, por la que dejó el alcohol, tuvieron su primer hijo, que falleció a los pocos meses en 1959. Ese mismo año un profesor le consiguió un pequeño papel para una obra de Broadway. Redford empezó a encadenar trabajos en teatro y televisión, y en 1962 actuó en los escenarios en Descalzos por el parque, elegido por el director, Mike Nichols. En cine también comenzó a frecuentar apariciones en La rebelde, La jauría humana, Situación desesperada y Propiedad condenada. Y sintió que aún le podía la pasión por la pintura y la aventura hippie: con su mujer y sus hijos se instaló en Málaga, antes de que Descalzos por el parque le rescatara para el cine como antes había hecho en el teatro; solo que a Elizabeth Ashley le sustituyó en la gran pantalla, en 1967, Jane Fonda. “Hollywood nunca me pareció un lugar mágico. No fue mi sueño. La fama llegó de forma inesperada. Empecé a verme tratado como un objeto. El lado oscuro de la fama. Primero uno se siente tratado como un objeto, luego se comporta como un objeto y finalmente, como no tengas cuidado, uno se convierte en un objeto. Hollywood es bueno para los negocios, pero prefiero vivir en otro sitio”.
A inicios de los ochenta comenzó a desarrollar su carrera como director y debutó con Gente corriente (1981), que supuso un puñetazo en la mesa del cine más íntimo y le reportó un triunfo en la taquilla, las críticas y los premios: obtuvo la estatuilla de Hollywood a la mejor dirección. Su ascendiente en la industria alcanzó su máximo apogeo, aunque en la dirección no volvería a brillar igual. Sí, realizó historias interesantes, aunque irregulares: Un lugar llamado Milagro (1988), El río de la vida (1992), Quiz Show (El dilema) (1994) —probablemente su mejor trabajo tras las cámaras, con, además, cuatro candidaturas a los premios Oscar—, El hombre que susurraba a los caballos (1998), La leyenda de Bagger Vance (2000), Leones por corderos (2007), La conspiración (2010) y Pacto de silencio (2010).
En los ochenta, Redford luchó por encajar su físico en los proyectos que le llegaban: El mejor (1984) le pilla demasiado mayor, a cambio su aparición en Memorias de África (1984) solidifica la trama romántica. En Peligrosamente juntos (1986) sabe reírse de sus tics como actor; Habana (1990) es un desastre que intentaba revivir la pasión de Memorias de África. A partir de ahí sí pareció más consciente de su edad y de su reflejo en pantalla: Sneakers, Una proposición indecente, Íntimo y personal, La última fortaleza o Spy Game le muestran maduro, con gestos de cansancio que dan poso a sus personajes.
En este siglo XXI mantuvo su actividad como estrella empujado por sus problemas económicos (malas decisiones empresariales), aunque de sus papeles el único en el que volvía a aparecer el Redford actor fue el navegante solitario de Cuando todo está perdido (2013). Y tras juguetear dos veces con una jubilación bien ganada, aún aparecería en Avengers: Endgame, prosiguiendo con el personaje que ya había encarnado en Capitán América: el soldado de invierno. “¿Pienso en la muerte? Es parte de la vida. Y seguro que en algún lugar de mi mente estoy aterrorizado. Es inevitable, pero sí puedo elegir entre vivir con miedo o seguir con mi vida y reírme de la muerte. Con la edad me he tenido que retirar de ciertas cosas, pero mientras pueda dar largas caminatas y montar a caballo, me seguiré riendo de ella”, aseguraba en Toronto en 2018.
Un año antes, en abril de 2017, asustado por los ataques de Trump, durante su primera presidencia, a a los medios de comunicación, publicó un artículo de opinión titulado 45 años después del Watergate, la verdad está otra vez en peligro en The Washington Post.Ahí explicaba que Trump había llevado las “falsas acusaciones de un periodismo de pacotilla” de la Administración Nixon a “nuevas y peligrosas alturas”. “El periodismo certero defiende nuestra democracia. Es una de las armas más efectivas que tenemos para restringir el hambre del poder. Siempre he dicho que Todos los hombres del presidente era una película violenta. No había disparos, pero las palabras se utilizaban como armas”.
De los cuatro vástagos de Redford, le sobreviven sus dos hijas, Shauna y Amy. James, fallecido en 2020, y Amy, la pequeña, han creado sus propias carreras en el audiovisual, lejos en alcance, eso sí, de su padre, un titán de la cultura estadounidense, que este martes, como en el final de Dos hombres y un destino, ha saltado no hacia la muerte, sino hacia la leyenda.
