Era un libro lleno de nostalgia, duelo y amor por un mundo desaparecido.
Karen escribía como alguien intentando conservar un lugar que ya no existe.
Y por eso la primera frase quedó grabada para siempre en la historia de la literatura:
“Yo tenía una granja en África, al pie de las colinas de Ngong.”
No dice “tengo”.
Dice “tenía”.Porque cuando empezó a escribirlo, ya lo había perdido todo.
Después siguió publicando relatos y cuentos que la convirtieron en una autora admirada en todo el mundo.
Incluso llegó a sonar varias veces para el Premio Nobel de Literatura.Pero nunca volvió a encontrar algo parecido a la vida que había tenido en Kenia.
Y quizá por eso “Memorias de África” sigue emocionando tanto hoy:
porque no habla solo de amor.
