‘Lembas bread. One byte is enough to fill the stomach of a grown man.’

You know what’s the opposite of lembas bread? #Filinchen. It was #EastGermany’s response to #CrispBread and you can still buy it today. It’s super light and not filling at all. You could eat a whole pack and still be hungry.

I’m not saying it isn’t good, it’s more like it doesn’t even exist! It just adds crispness to its topping. It feels like eating crispy jam.

🔏 An old disused prison in Germany.

Initially designed for medium-term and pre-trial detention, this building and its 50 single-occupancy cells have witnessed some darker chapters in history.

Disused since the 1980s, the khaki green halls still contain haunting cells with folding bunks and reinforced doors.

⛪ 🇩🇪 A dilapidated red brick bell tower rises above the tree line, atop a small hill in a German village. A neo-Gothic silhouette that is increasingly blurred by encroaching trees.
Post-reunification attendance dropped, and the church closed in the 1990s. Lack of heating and ventilation allowed black mould to thrive, covering around 90 per cent of the interior surfaces.

A collection of abandoned Soviet-era sports halls from the former USSR and East Germany. These spaces remain largely as they were left when the Soviet forces retreated in the early 1990s. Now they are relics from a different time, rotting in place as the world moves on around them.

An abandoned ballroom, one of many that sit decaying in what once was East Germany.

The stunning late 1800s example retains most of its original features, from the mustard-coloured curtains that line the stage to the retro pendant light fitting hanging from the ceiling. Sadly, it suffered a fire a few months before my visit, and the smell of charred wood was still strong in the air.

An abandoned nine-pin bowling alley, somewhere in Germany 🇩🇪

The was built for nearby factory workers in the 1950s.

By the 1980s it was abandoned and left to decay. The wooden floorboards are now rotting and splintered, with sapling trees beginning to grow through the lanes.

The Consecration of a Lodge usually happens just once, when the Lodge is first opened officially by their Grand Master, and the Charter of the Lodge is handed over as recognition that this new Lodge is Just and Regular.

In East Germany, in the early Nineties, many Lodges forced to close by the National Socialists were re-opened and Consecrated once more, allowing them to work after almost fifty years of darkness.

I have been lucky enough to explore many ballrooms across the former German Democratic Republic (GDR). At the turn of the 20th century, every town seems to have had one! Ballrooms played a crucial role in the community, serving as a hub for gatherings and socialising. These entertainment venues were popular right up until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
