  1. Okay. I feel the need for some positivity around here. 😁

    You guys NEED this: 👇

  2. @autonerdery almost impossible to beat a #MercedesBenz #W124 in terms of driveability and longevity if properly maintained. 🤩

  3. As an added bonus for #WeirdCar Mastodon aficionados, there were two Mercedes-Benz #W124 E-Class in good condition.

  4. @bgluckman Is there a wrong answer?! 🤷‍♂️

#W124 coupé #C124 was one of my favorite automobiles when owned. Effortless mile muncher at 80-100 mph (where permitted). Comfortable seats for 4 adults with their luggage. Excellent climate control. And of course, the amazing quirkery of the power rear windows, the seat belt advancers, and the front seat backs which unlocked automatically when the front door opened.

It was also reliable, inexpensive to service.

  5. @serichards those are so tidy! Sleeping wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Red can be a really tough color to get just right, but that era of VAG red was perfect.

I would love one of these.

  6. @ukuku see the #EQE #EV in my neighborhood regularly, and the #EQS.

Beautiful interiors, but dislike the blob styling and front end especially.

Prefer the #BMWi4, which is keenly priced, especially for leasing, but many hate that because of the new grille design. 🤷‍♂️

  7. @serichards from my limited experience with both #Chargemap and #ABRP apps, I would like to be able to pick waypoints with chargers myself, like adding a waypoint to a navigation app, not just let the app pick one based on the intended charge % upon arrival at one’s destination. Maybe this exists already?

I didn’t really have time to play much with #BMWi4 navigation, but I expect the advantage of that would be preparing the car and battery for the intended charge location chosen.

    #EVCharging

  8. So far, in this small village in the middle of nowhere, #Chargemap is providing much more detail on the state of the chargers than #ABRP.

    For example:

  9. Just following up on my recent discussion about #EVChargingApp choices in Europe.

#ZapMap describes itself in the App Store as a 🇬🇧 charging app, so I haven’t loaded that one for a trip to 🇫🇷.

I have loaded #ABRP so I’m checking that out.

Finally, #ChargeMap. This one requires a free registration to see much, so I’m going to do that.

I’ll only be renting for three days, and I’ll be busy, so we’ll see how much information I can share.

  10. I found it! 😂

Fortunately, I didn’t watch many YouTube videos until very recently, and I could sort of remember the content of the video I wanted.

The answer: #ABRP for A Better Route Planner. 🥳

Here is the video in question, where Martin picks up a #BMWi3 in Edinburgh and drives it to London.

  11. @DazzlingDamo @motoringpodcast circling the drain like #BritishLeyland of old? Surely not! 😱

#RangeRover certainly seem to enjoy a reasonable amount of success in the car Mecca of seemingly limitless budgets that is SoCal. #Defender and #Discovery seem to have dropped off a cliff edge. I think I might see a Lucid Air more frequently than either. 😬

Don’t know what would be the best source for actual sales numbers to confirm this.

  12. @Basmitharts really depends on what you compare it to, and what the intended usage is… half the price of a Range Rover, but at least half the luxury too. 🤷‍♂️

    #WeirdCar #LandRover #RangeRover

  13. @Mark Those batteries are quite cheap for today’s prices. I think mine are about $300, but the the originals from Mercedes-Benz did last 13 years on BOTH cars! 🤩

We replaced one with a #Varta who were the OEM supplier for the car. The other we replaced with a #Bosch, since no Varta options were available.

I asked my mechanic how likely it was that an #Interstate battery would last 13 years. His reply? 0% chance.

  14. Does anyone know if @chromblitzen is doing okay? 😬

I haven’t seen him around since I got back from my transatlantic adventure.

Virtual friends on social media are important friends too. 🤞 🍀 🙏

  15. @jon console yourself with Rees-Mogg losing his seat!

This video appears to have been expunged from the English language Interwebs. Fortunately, the French national archives appear to have preserved it in its entirety.

    Cringeworthy.

  16. @richlucking I just posted this in a different thread. 🧵

The English version appears to have been expunged in the last couple of years, but fortunately, the French media archives have preserved it in its entirety.

  17. @adrianco that’s probably the best news all night.

There was a video of Rees-Mogg at 12 talking about stocks and how he liked money. It appears to haven been cleansed from the mediaverse. This version from the French National Archives gives an excllent perspective.

He used to be driven to school with a chauffeur in a Rolls-Royce. What sort of grounding is that?! 😱

  18. @davidwilkins I’ve ridden in one through the vineyards of Burgundy. It’s a very plush environment. The leather quality is superb. The dampening of uneven surfaces exemplary.

The clock is lovely, if a bit gimmicky IMO. My initial thought was how well would that be doing after 10-15 years of use? 🤔

A very nice vehicle indeed. No idea of pricing and options, costs to maintain etc.

  20. @serichards I want links to the propitious vehicle! Only then can I share my worthless opinion of the pros and cons. I still think any i3 counts as car porn. 🤪

    #WierdCar #BMWi3

  21. @BitchinRob Wisely Automotive on YouTube and FB is an excellent resource IMHO.

Arthur (owner) and Martin are very knowledgeable and communicate openly about pricing, frequent issues, etc.

They also recently posted the cost of their service interventions.

Martin has also driven various i3 models across country, and reported on the ease of doing that as well.

  22. Would I buy a #BMWi4 after this?

    No.

Very competent. Doesn’t feel like a BMW IMH(fbw)O*. Too heavy.

The #BMWi3 feels much more like a BMW. Nimble and sprightly.

Once inside, the rear view is like a cave for cave trolls. I’m not a cave troll. Very dark, and huge rear pillars. One has to rely on the cameras a lot, but for overtaking or lane changing, glancing over one’s shoulder is insufficient for carefree maneuvers.

    * fbw = free but worthless

  23. @ukuku that’s amazing!

There’s a dude on the BMW Blog with a 2014 #BMWi3 who mentions he averages 4.9 miles per kWh in combined usage of highway and city when the weather is between 40F – 90F.

He did also mention a big performance hit in the winter though. 👎

    #WeirdCar

  24. Well there are the final results! 🥳

Thank you all for voting. Fun experience with some interesting discussions.

I’m not entirely surprised the #BMWi3 won the poll.

I am somewhat surprised that the #BMWi8 Roadster didn’t get more votes, as it’s the more unusual car, so maybe a future classic, as @ukuku has suggested before. 🤔

This is the i3, CPO, with 11 months of the new car warranty remaining. CPO adds another year + unlimited miles after that.

It is a 3Y lease return.

  25. @SteveInVentura I’ve watched a few videos from #WiselyAutomotive of London Town 🇬🇧. They specialize in #BMWi3 and other EV’s. I normally hate YouTube but Martin of W.A. is a joy to listen to.

Anyway, some of his explanations involve road trips to drive purchased i3’s back to London, and he never discharges the battery completely, or charges above 90% because it wastes time on a long trip.

It’s an extreme example, but it demonstrates the logic perfectly.

  26. Current mood:

♥️: I really want to buy a #BMWi3. They’re much cheaper than they were a year ago when I first considered one.

🧠: shut up! Not again! 😑 It didn’t make financial sense the first time. It still doesn’t. Stop-it already! 😠

♥️: I also really want to buy a #BMWi8 for about $50K (pre tax & registration etc.).

🧠: Wut?! Are you off your meds?! 😳 😱

    ♥️: I don’t take any meds.

🧠: I think you should start. Pronto! 🤦‍♂️

  27. @serichards voted for the i3 brain car, because I just loved that thing when I tried it last year. 🥰

I didn’t find the cloth seats objectionable, but I did find the leather seats (and interior) very dark.

If I were you, I’d try for one with the technology package, which gets the larger center screen which looks much more up to date.

Charging was a breeze, and the acceleration felt faster than either of our Mercedes-Benz V6 petrol cars.

    #BMWi3

  28. @Basmitharts As much as I love all the suggestions, I think that those who are suggesting the #CitroënDS win the day! 🏆

Nothing else has such mind blowing curvaceous design cues for an historic architectural home like this.

For the second vehicle, and some added practicality for local driving, I’m going with the #BMWi3. A modern classic in its own right.
