Der große römische Feldherr und Senator Lukullus muss beim Verhör vor dem Totengericht erfahren, dass alle seine kriegerischen Ruhmestaten im Totenreich nicht zählen. Positiv bewertet wird einzig, dass er die Kirsche nach Italien gebracht und einmal die Verbrennung von Büchern verhindert hat. – https://oe1.orf.at/player/live
Brecht hat das Stück 1940 im schwedischen Exil als Auftragsarbeit für den schwedischen Rundfunk geschrieben. Es kam dort allerdings nie zur Aufführung. Der Schweizer Rundfunk sendete dieses ‚Radiostück‘ (zit. Brecht) im Mai 1940. Eine mit dem Komponisten Paul Dessau geschaffene Version für die Opernbühne wurde 1951 in Ostberlin uraufgeführt. Wie schon in dem Gedicht ‚Fragen eines lesenden Arbeiters‘ aus dem Jahre 1935 findet sich auch in diesem Stück die Grundidee Brechts, Geschichte müsse aus der Sicht der arbeitenden Menschen, nicht aus der der herrschenden, geschrieben und bewertet werden.
