  1. AAAS: "As prospect of unregulated deep-sea mining looms, scientists sound the alarm." Negotiators missed a July deadline to complete regulations on mining, thus the International Seabed Authority (ISA) is raising the alarming prospect that mining operations targeting metals needed by the EV industry could commence without effective safeguards. The ISA regulates seabed mining beyond the limits of national jurisdictions. "The intergovernmental body, which was established under a 1994 agreement by the United Nations, spent years developing rules for commercial exploration and has issued 31 permits to mining companies and government agencies." Much of the recent discussion in Kimgston, Jamaica concerned a remote region of the eastern Pacific Ocean called the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), which stretches from south of Hawaii to Mexico. "Four kilometers down, the sea floor in the region is dotted with trillions of polymetallic nodules that are estimated to contain more cobalt and nickel than all known land deposits." Companies such as Canadian-owned Nauru Ocean Resources hope to start mining in CCZ in late 2024. Such mining would involve 'sucking them into bus-size seafloor mining machines and pumping them to the surface.' The operation would also stir up sediment plumes, laced with metals, and generate noise and light that could spread harm far beyond the mining site. In May a paper found that thousands of species have yet to be identified in the CCZ. The photo shows polymetallic nodules, dotting the seabed under a carnivorous sponge capturing a crab. A modern-day gold rush with significant harms.   #deepseamining    #environmentalrisk    #electricvehicles

  3. Scientists Discover New #DeepSea #OctopusNursery in Costa Rica schmidtocean.org/scientists-di

"A team of international #scientists have discovered a new deep-sea #octopus nursery at a low-temperature #HydrothermalVent offshore of #CostaRica. The discovery of the brooding site brings the world’s known octopus nurseries to three... Additionally, the expedition reinforced the idea that some species of deep-sea octopus seek out low-temperature #HydrothermalVents for brooding their eggs."

  5. 🔒💻 Classified Announcement from the NSA! 💻🔒

🌊🔍 Today, we shed light on the courageous efforts of our agents and contractors who go to great lengths to ensure national security in the realm of deep-sea communications. Join us as we explore the challenges they face and the vital work they carry out beneath the ocean's surface. 🌊🔒

🔍🚤 Operating in the deep sea environment poses significant risks and demands exceptional skill, bravery, and resilience. Our dedicated agents and contractors face the perils of working in extreme conditions, including the confines of submersibles, to intercept communications critical to safeguarding our nation. 🌊💪

📲💻 The interception of communications extends beyond the realm of cyber networks. Deep ocean fiber communication lines are a vital target in our ongoing efforts to protect American interests and prevent potential threats. Balancing privacy and security is an ongoing challenge that we continuously address with utmost responsibility. 🔒🌐

🌊⚠️ The dangers inherent in this work cannot be understated. From the treacherous conditions of the deep sea to the risks associated with operating in submersibles, our agents and contractors willingly place themselves in harm's way. Their unwavering commitment to the mission is commendable. 💙🌊

👩‍💼💼 We are grateful for the dedication and expertise of our deep-sea operatives. Their invaluable contributions enable us to gather intelligence vital to the security of our nation while remaining vigilant in safeguarding American civilians' privacy. Striking the right balance is a constant priority for us. 💻🌊

👏🌐 Today, we honor the men and women who work tirelessly beneath the waves, protecting our nation from potential threats. Their unwavering commitment and sacrifice deserve our utmost respect and gratitude. Together, we forge a safer future. 🇺🇸💙

“If one vertical thruster fails, you don't have a submersible that can rise, you get a fucking rotisserie.”

How many metazoan species live in the world’s largest mineral exploration region? cell.com/current-biology/fullt by Muriel Rabone et al.

"#Scientists amassed and analyzed more than 100,000 published records of animals found in the #ClarionClippertonZone, with some records dating back to the 1870s. About 90 percent of the species were previously undescribed"

  8. Scientists calculate there are thousands of unidentified species living on the ocean floor between Hawaii and Mexico where deep-sea mining for critical minerals needed to build batteries is set to begin next year.

  9. Deep-sea mining could create clouds of sediment that smother life on the ocean floor. Scientists measured the plume of a prototype mining vehicle and found that it stayed close to the seabed, creating a turbidity current. The impact of such plumes on marine ecosystems is still unknown and highly debated.

  11. ‘We can’t be Māori without the ocean’ — Quack Pirihi, Pacific activist against deep sea mining

    Quack Pirihi, 21 March 2023

"Papatūānuku (Earth mother) shows us that they know how to cleanse themselves of mamae (hurt or pain). They know cyclones will wash away homes and they know the extent of flooding. Papatūānuku knows the scale that deep sea mining will have on themselves. Papatuanuku will still remain, but our livelihood, our connection with the whenua (land), can and will change drastically if things continue to be ignored."

  13. I finished watching #deepspacenine. It has good characters and has it’s moments, but the quality of writing is very uneven, even within a single episode. And those first two seasons were a rough slog.

#babylonfive also had two relatively weak seasons in the beginning, but in addition to character-building it did a better job in setting the stage for the big conflict. And when it got going it kept the momentum better.
