  1. Heartbreaking: Thousands of fluffy emperor penguin chicks have drowned as Antarctic sea ice shatters beneath them — too early for the babies to swim or stay warm.
The IUCN has now officially listed emperor penguins as Endangered. Record-low sea ice, driven by global heating, is collapsing their breeding grounds. Entire colonies are falling into the ocean. Chicks that don't drown often freeze to death, soaked and helpless.
This isn't some distant future scenario. It's happening now — in 2022 alone, four out of five colonies in the Bellingshausen Sea were wiped out. Scientists are calling them a "sentinel species": what we're doing to the planet is playing out in real time on the ice.
The emperor penguin’s move to endangered is a stark warning: climate change is accelerating the extinction crisis before our eyes.

  5. Japan asks Denmark to extradite anti-whaling activist #PaulWatson

Denmark announced Thursday that it has received Japan's extradition request for anti-whaling activist Paul Watson, who was arrested in Greenland last month on an international arrest warrant. Watson, the 73-year-old founder of #SeaShepherd, is facing charges related to a 2010 confrontation with Japanese #whaling ships, raising concerns over his potential extradition and the motivations behind Japan's request.

    Issued on: 01/08/2024

"#Denmark's justice ministry said Thursday that it had received Japan's extradition request for anti-whaling activist Paul Watson, who was detained in #Greenland last month on an international arrest warrant.

"Watson, the 73-year-old American-Canadian founder of the Sea Shepherd activist group, was arrested on July 21 in Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, over a 2010 altercation with Japanese whaling ships.

"Watson, who featured in the reality TV series '#WhaleWars', founded Sea Shepherd and the Captain Paul Watson Foundation (#CPWF), and is known for #DirectAction tactics including confrontations with whaling ships at sea.

"'The Ministry of Justice received a formal extradition request regarding Paul Watson from the Japanese authorities yesterday,' the ministry told AFP in an email."

    [...]

"'#Japan has a personal vendetta against #PaulWatson, and this so-called offence is the pretext for revenge against a man who defied and therefore humiliated them,' [Francois Zimeray] told AFP.

"He said an extradition to Japan would be a violation of the European Convention on #HumanRights, since 'the country does not respect international standards on fair trials and prisons.'"

  6. The deep sea #mining industry stalks, while governments talk

by Maud Oyonarte & Sebastian Losada, 31 March 2023

"The world is waking up to the significance of the threat from deep sea mining, but governments have squandered a major opportunity to take action at the 28th Session of the International Seabed Authority (ISA). Even after two weeks of negotiation, they failed to reach an agreement to put a clear stop to deep sea mining.

"With no agreed plan to stop the deep sea mining industry from starting this year, the door is left open for the industry to mine the seabed. And that’s unacceptable!

"The past two weeks have seen Indigenous advocates reject deep sea mining, scientific warnings of the risks grow ever stronger, and the longest-standing and biggest corporate backer of the industry call it quits. Despite such clear messages, the negotiations at the Council of the ISA failed to yield concrete results, notably on the most pressing topic at hand: how to ensure that deep sea mining can not be authorized some time soon after July 2023."

  7. ‘We can’t be Māori without the ocean’ — Quack Pirihi, Pacific activist against deep sea mining

    Quack Pirihi, 21 March 2023

"Papatūānuku (Earth mother) shows us that they know how to cleanse themselves of mamae (hurt or pain). They know cyclones will wash away homes and they know the extent of flooding. Papatūānuku knows the scale that deep sea mining will have on themselves. Papatuanuku will still remain, but our livelihood, our connection with the whenua (land), can and will change drastically if things continue to be ignored."
