How does the alvinellid worm Paralvinella hessleri survive the toxic extremes of deep-sea #HydrothermalVents? A new study in #PLOSBiology shows that it detoxifies its environment by forming orpiment (As₂S₃) minerals inside epithelial cells; this unique #biomineralization reveals a novel adaptation to toxic environments.

New bacterial genome announcement from our team:
Draft genome sequence of Desulfobacterota strain M19, a mesophilic sulfur-disproportionating bacterium from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge https://journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mra.00295-25
This new bacterium was found on a #DeepSea hydrothermal vent, 1663m deep under the Atlantic ocean surface. It can grow by both "eating" and "breathing" a single chemical—pure elemental sulfur.

The #TongaEruption Left #DeepSea Life Buried in Ash https://eos.org/articles/the-tonga-eruption-left-deep-sea-life-buried-in-ash Paper: https://www.nature.com/articles/s43247-024-01411-w
"a team of scientists was on a #ResearchVessel near Tonga to study the #animals that live around #HydrothermalVents. But when they lowered a remotely operated vehicle down to a vent to search for the critters, they found the seafloor, normally a hard basalt surface, blanketed in sediment... they now had a rare opportunity to document the effects of a volcanic eruption on marine ecosystems"

Investigating newly discovered #HydrothermalVents at depths of 3,000 meters off #Svalbard
https://phys.org/news/2024-06-newly-hydrothermal-vents-depths-meters.html paper: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-024-60802-3"At depths greater than 3000m, the remote-controlled #submersible vehicle MARUM-QUEST took samples from the newly discovered #hydrothermal field... hydrothermal fluids form the basis for #chemosynthesis, which is employed by organisms in #symbiosis with #bacteria."

Five new #DeepSea #HydrothermalVents discovered in the Eastern Tropical #Pacific #Ocean https://cas.lehigh.edu/content/five-new-hydrothermal-vents-discovered-eastern-tropical-pacific-ocean
"#Scientists on the expedition mapped the area at night using the undersea robot #Sentry, an autonomous underwater vehicle... After Sentry was recovered each morning, high-resolution maps from the vehicle’s sensors were then used to plan the day’s dive by the human-occupied vehicle #Alvin, which enables scientists to view firsthand this complex and constantly changing environment"

Hydrothermal vents, vernal ponds, impact of space bodies
These are three possible scenarios that could have turned prebiotic chemistry on early Earth into true life-forms.

Parasitizing #DeepSea #hydrothermal vents https://blogs.biomedcentral.com/bugbitten/2023/08/18/parasitizing-deep-sea-hydrothermal-vents/
#Parasite diversity at isolated, disturbed #HydrothermalVents: Lauren Dykman et al. https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2023.0877
"total parasite richness was lower in vents compared to the #kelp forests and intertidal #sandflats. Interestingly, #parasites with indirect life cycles, which were expected to be scarcer, were in fact relatively abundant due to the number of #trematode parasites found infecting host groups living on hydrothermal vents."

Scientists Discover New Ecosystem Underneath #Hydrothermal Vents https://schmidtocean.org/scientists-discover-new-ecosystem-underneath-hydrothermal-vents/
"New #ecosystem has been discovered in #volcanic cavities beneath #HydrothermalVents at a well-studied #undersea #volcano on the #EastPacificRise off #CentralAmerica. The landmark 30-day expedition aboard #ResearchVessel Falkor (too) was led by Dr. Monika Bright... Using a #robot, they overturned chunks of volcanic crust, discovering #cave systems teeming with #worms, #snails, and #chemosynthetic #bacteria"

The Lavatic Theatre https://schmidtocean.org/cruise-log-post/the-lavatic-theatre/ #DeepSea #HydrothermalVents
"Averaging, and at times exceeding, blackened submarine depths of 2500 meters, the #Riftia tube worm flourishes in thrumming cities of chiton; their interlocking cabled architectures capped by crimson groves of labial, lipstick-like protuberances (the hemoglobin-rich gill structures used for harvesting vented sulfide)."

Succession and Diversity through Dispersal and Settlement https://schmidtocean.org/cruise-log-post/succession-and-diversity-through-dispersal-and-settlement/
Dr. Sabine Gollner: "The 9°North East #Pacific Rise is an ideal study site to unravel #PrimarySuccession, the rate at which #animal communities colonize #HydrothermalVents after a #volcanic eruption. About every 15-20 years, volcanic eruptions pave the area with #lava, allowing us to study the change in the species structuring a community over time, starting at a point zero."

Scientists Discover New #DeepSea #OctopusNursery in Costa Rica https://schmidtocean.org/scientists-discover-new-deep-sea-octopus-nurseries-in-costa-rica/
"A team of international #scientists have discovered a new deep-sea #octopus nursery at a low-temperature #HydrothermalVent offshore of #CostaRica. The discovery of the brooding site brings the world’s known octopus nurseries to three... Additionally, the expedition reinforced the idea that some species of deep-sea octopus seek out low-temperature #HydrothermalVents for brooding their eggs."

#Hydrothermal Activity Discovered Along The Puy de Folles Vent Field https://astrobiology.com/2023/04/hydrothermal-activity-discovered-along-the-puy-de-folles-vent-field.html
#NOAA, #SchmidtOceanInstitute, and partners recently embarked on the In Search of Hydrothermal Lost Cities expedition on the Schmidt’s #ResearchVessel Falkor (too) to locate and observe #HydrothermalVents activity along the #MidAtlanticRidge.

How brachyuran #crabs survive in highly acidic areas near shallow-water #HydrothermalVents https://phys.org/news/2023-01-brachyuran-crabs-survive-highly-acidic.html
Cellular mechanisms underlying extraordinary sulfide tolerance in a #crustacean #holobiont from hydrothermal vents https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rspb.2022.1973
The crabs have unique gills able to oxidize the #sulfide to #thiosulfate and to bind it to #hypotaurine, generating #thiotaurine. #Bacteria living in the gills absorb the thiotaurine—they use it as an energy source and make it even less #toxic.
