The RV Pelagia has left this morning for the NoSE-expedition.
The biologically productive North Sea impacts the global climate through exchange of carbon and nutrients with the #Atlantic #Ocean. A lot of carbon dioxide (CO2) could be taken up through physical, biological and sedimentological processes. But much is still unknown. Dutch scientists investigate how big the role of the #NorthSea really is in the uptake of carbon.

Seagrass and soil animals determine the quality of natural #coastalprotection.
Jaco de Smit improved a research method to conduct realistic experiments in the sea. In doing so, he discovered that offshore seagrass🌱 is surprisingly resilient to storms and that soil-dwelling crustaceans🦀 make the soil less stable.

Fast explorers use more visual foraging and eat soft prey such as worms, while slow explorers use tactile foraging and feed on hard-shelled prey such as cockles.
