Hacker News "Ratio": political commentary sites
Continuing my look at the comments/votes ratio, a look at sites which tend to focus on political commentary and their "spiciness". These tend to be well above mean (0.63), median (0.52), and tend to be a standard deviation or more from the mean (1 sd: 0.78, 2 sd: 0.92, 3 sd: 1.06).

Hacker News Front Page Analytics ... what next?
I'm thinking through where else to take this. I've had a few side discussions and commentary here and at HN. Part of this is coming up with questions, part with the tools to answer them.
The initial question concerned places and regional references found on the HN front page. My initial analysis answered that (US states), and it was pretty easy to add cities (US and global) and countries to the list.
I also wanted some overall summary statistics, for all time, by year, by period (I've done weekdays, I still need to get to months). There were some interesting comparisons --- vote and comment activity by page position, for example (there's an 844.4 point advantage for 1st over 30th place in votes, 340.3 in comments, for 2022, on average).
I've broken out overall and average (per-story) votes and comments, which is interesting.
There's top-site and top-user activity, and how that changes over time. I've done some work on this, I'm thinking of both other questions and how to represent this graphically.
(Graphical representation is a question for other aspects as well ... what I've created so far is great for people who like reading 100s of pages of tables, less for those who prefer a visual representation.)
What I've done less of, and am trying to think of ways to surface interesting elements rather than be strictly query/question driven, is to find patterns and trends in the data itself, most especially in the title text. There are challenges: HN doesn't provide much to work with (titles are restricted to 80 characters, generally), and there is of course ambiguity, though I'd posted a set of interesting/amusing items (see: https://toot.cat/@dredmorbius/110454128168815763).
I've been playing with some simple ngram code (awk associative arrays of 2..5 elements ... mind-bogglingly easy to create and often surprisingly insightful).
I've relied on some external lists of entities (states, cities, countries, etc.) which are useful. I'd done an earlier analysis based on the Foreign Policy Top 100 Global Thinkers list, assessing salience level of various online sources, in 2015 (see: https://old.reddit.com/r/dredmorbius/comments/3hp41w/tracking_the_conversation_fp_global_100_thinkers/). I can re-use that list, though I'd like to find a few others --- top startups / companies / people. Also perhaps major stories and terms from the past two decades. (I've done some searches based on my own recollection, e.g., MeToo, BLM, George Floyd, and the like with some success).
And I'd like to do a deeper parse of the source HTML to grab both HN threads and source URLs. I've found the html-xml-utils package useful, need to check that's installed locally (OK, seems it is) and wrap my head around it again (the tools are ... idiosyncratic). Oh, and homebrew lists package executables in /usr/local/opt//bin/, which is good to know. Yay!
(Yes, I'm aware there are other tools. I'm a simple basher.)

Hard news and CWs: my practices and tips
Having blown out a bunch of non-CW'd toots in the past day or so:
I don't obsess on p*l*t*cs and hard news, but I'll follow and comment, hopefully intelligently, on notable stories and issues, among numerous other topics. Unfortunately this may mean further amplifying major stories.
I do typically hashtag both general and US-centric, as well as other regional issues of law, leadership, legislation, campaigning, and litigation. Filtering the Usual Suspects should be effective. As hashtags aren't effective except on Globally listed toots, this creates a conflict in visibility and filtering.
CWs in long threads are not without consequences and have major usability issues. I avoid them for these reasons. (This has improved ... somewhat ... with Mastodon v. 4, though concerns remain. 2022-12-2 update.)
I do strive generally for substantive commentary. Hopefully there's some comfort in avoiding the Two Minute Hate / shriekfest.
I don't pursue unwanted conversations, and appreciate the same from others. If I note that I'm getting bored or tired of a discussion ... that's generally a sharp understatement.
In the event this toot isn't already filtered or blocked, some tips:
Yes, muting or blocking is entirely fair; tend to your own needs first. I'm a fan: https://toot.cat/@dredmorbius/104371585950783019
Lists are a powerful feature of numerous clients. A curated feed of known trusted, safe, and personally-conformant profiles is useful. I make heavy use of lists myself (mostly graded by interest level).
Filters similarly.
Mastodon and Glitch-soc both allow adding, removing, and rearranging pinned streams. You don't need to have Notifications, Home, Local, or Global feeds visible if you find them unsettling.
I've taken to reconfiguring my own clients for broader and narrower views frequently in recent weeks, sometimes seeking more content, sometimes less and a calmer feed.
Keyword filters can also be used, with varying effectiveness.
I reserve the right to discuss serious or heady topics. Some appreciate this, some not. Your response is your business.
I'm hoping my own toots will regress to more typical topics and nature. I fear that outside events may thwart this. While I'm not a slave to external events, I'm an active observer and participant.
Thank you.

I've been seeing a lot of distressing news lately.
Fortunately, I grew up with Fred Rogers on TV, and today I see a lot of helpers around me, and seeing them--and their willingness to show up and be seen--that gives me hope.
Fred Rogers: Look for the Helpers
"You know, my mother used to say--long time ago, whenever there would be any really cat--catastrophe that was on the--in the movies or or on the air, she would say, 'Always look for the helpers.'
There were--there will always be helpers, you know, even just on the sidelines.
That's why I think that if news programs could make a conscious effort of showing rescue teams--of--of showing who medical people--anybody who is coming into a place where there's a tragedy to be--to be sure that they include that because if you look for the helpers you'll know that there's hope."

Shipping
It’s weird but I actually have two packages that have been shipped out by me over the last couple of days. One is a passport renewal form that went out via Fed Ex last night and the other is seven rolls of 35mm film* that I sent out via USPS on Saturday. Which will arrive at its destination first? The race is on! In this post-pandemic era of online shopping it’s common to be following packages that are on their way to you, but less common to have to follow packages that are on their way from you. Maybe not. I don’t know. I have to write about something.
Apparently you can spend six months in Scotland without a visa. Who knew? Ireland only lets you stay for three months. England and Wales are also six months, so is that a UK thing in general? What about Australia? I’ve recently watched two television shows that took place in Australia so I feel like I practically live there already. Duck Duck Go (fuck you, Google) says you need to obtain an Australian visa before you arrive. Well that’s no fun. Kevin Garvey, Jr and Nora Durst must have already had a visa when they left Miracle, TX on The Leftovers. Kevin Garvey, Sr… well who knows that that whack job was doing. He sure as hell didn’t.
The Bruins season ended last night on another painful loss. Some teams still have a game left to play, but my team is done. Mercifully. The best they can finish is tied with Philly for last place in the Eastern Conference. The worst they can do is finish in last all by their lonesome. Unfortunately for the draft lottery, there are 4-5 teams out west that will finish with worse records. Not that we have a General Manager who knows how to draft for shit though. In other Boston sports news, the Red Sox actually won a game last night after getting humiliated on Monday night. Fun.
I’m in the office today and tomorrow so the pickin’s for photo a day will be slim. Not that it matters. They are all just pictures of cats anyway. This one for today made use of the iPhone’s low light feature. It works well.

*35mm film refers to the size of the negative… I think. 120 film does not refer to the size of the negative. I read somewhere that it refers to an old Kodak catalog product code. Mentioning 35mm and 120 film in the same sentence makes my ass itch. It’s like doing your physics homework and mixing up your units of measure. It’s like referring to velocity (measured in meters/seconds) and acceleration (measured in meters/seconds squared) as if they were the same thing. I believe the product code for 35mm is actually 135 (not too confusing there, Kodak) but I don’t know what the negative size for 120 film is. I can’t bring myself to call 35mm 135 so I guess I will continue to mix units and have an itchy ass. I could say medium format instead of 120 but that just feels like taking it all a step too far. I don’t know.

Sad news!
Unfortunately, Noir didn't make it.
Yesterday he was stable, but today he started losing his temperature, then his blood pressure, and there was no response to the medication at all. And in the afternoon, the cat's heart stopped... It's incredibly sad. He fought until the very end, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough.
I'm sorry, Noir 🖤.
