Hunger Strike in La Modelo Prison in Cúcuta, Colombia
Since April 15, 2025, more than 4,000 prisoners of the La Modelo prison in Cúcuta have gone on hunger strike, protesting the poor food service they receive. Prisoners have shared videos showing rations consisting of a glass of rice, half a sausage and a glass of lemonade, which has generated outrage, both in the prisoners and their families, in human rights groups, as well as in those who know that prisons are overcrowded with innocent and revolutionary people.
The relatives have made complaints that this situation represents a violation of the constitutional rights to life, health and dignity of the prisoners, a problem that has persisted for many years. In addition, corruption has been denounced within the penitentiary, where prisoners must pay exorbitant prices for wanting to bring in decent food for their own consumption. Those who can’t afford to pay suffer even more, with reports of spoiled food and sometimes maggots.
Although this situation met with an organized response from the prisoners of the La Modelo prison in Cúcuta, the truth is that in the rest of the 132 dungeons in the state, distributed in 28 of the 32 departments of the country, they also suffer from the terrible conditions of the judicial and penitentiary system, exacerbated by the problem of overcrowding. There are approximately 150 thousand prisoners crammed into an infrastructure with capacity for only 82,232 according to the reports of the Agency of Investigative Journalism, statistics that allow us to understand why decent food, health care, infrastructure, cultural and recreational activities, etc., are not guaranteed in prisons, denounced by the National Prison Movement.
This serious prison crisis is the reflection of a Colombian state, completely disinterested in building a more dignified country where problems such as hunger, poor education, lack of health, unemployment, labor exploitation, repression, etc., which have led to the degradation of Colombian society and consequently to nourish these prisons, are solved at the root. The prisons are also filled not only with bandits who are no longer functional to their project of death, but also with innocents and people who have not received a sentence, as well as thousands of fighters and rebels who are kidnapped by the state for wanting to transform this country.

Hunger Games thoughts.
In the original trilogy, Haymitch calms Katniss after she shoots the arrow at the Game Makers by assuring her the Capitol won't hurt her family because to do so they'd "have to reveal" what happened during the training session. But from SotR, we know Snow has, at least in the past, not given two shits about how it looks to harm the families of tributes. Sure, he waited until after the Games, but I think he was waiting to see if Haymitch died in the Games; if Haymitch had died, then his family would still be alive (don't think too hard about that, Haymitch already has).
So was Haymitch lying to Katniss? Was this a newer trend? I don't think Snow had given up harming tribute families; Johanna says she's got no family left, and I think it's implied that this is Snow's fault.

Man darf die #DDR ganz sicher nicht mit dem aktuellen #Deutschland vergleichen. Wir haben #Demokratie & #Meinungsfreiheit, alles wovon wir in der #DDR nur träumen konnten.
Ich, wie viele andere auch in #Ostdeutschland, wurde in den 1990' einfach auf die Strasse gespuckt. Kannst gehen und brauchst nie wieder kommen. Danach: Arbeit kannste haben, musst aber Geld vom Amt mitbringen. Selbst #Hungerlohn war zuviel Lohn!

DeSantis also explicitly linked the effort to the loss of immigrant labor. Speaking about the consequences of state verification laws at an event with border czar #TomHoman, the governor said, 'Yes, we had people that left because of those rules, but you’ve also been able to hire other people. And what’s wrong with expecting our young people to be working part-time now?'
"In recent years, several states — many of them led by #Republican governors — have rolled back child labor laws. This map from the Economic Policy Institute illustrates the spike in states rolling back these laws from 2021 to 2024. Back in 2023, for example, #Arkansas Gov. #SarahHuckabeeSanders signed a bill that made it easier for companies to hire children without getting consent from their parents. One month earlier, The New York Times published a bombshell report about the #exploitation of immigrant children in #factories operated by some of the most well-known companies in the U.S.
"That story should have spurred a nationwide push to strengthen child labor laws. Instead, states like Florida are going in the opposite direction, weakening such laws in part to deal with the fallout from the conservative movement’s demonization of immigrants. They’re essentially using child labor to paper over the gaps left by their draconian immigration policies.
"#Project2025, the far-right playbook for Trump’s second term, specifically calls for rolling back 'hazard' regulations around child labor. The text claims, 'Some young adults show an interest in inherently dangerous jobs' and argues that 'with parental consent and proper training, certain young adults should be allowed to learn and work in more dangerous occupations.'
"Even as child labor laws are being rolled back, the Trump administration is working to gut #SocialServices, including funds that help provide #SchoolLunches to children and programs, like the supplemental nutrition assistance program [#SNAP], that help feed poor families. And if those cuts stay in place, they may leave American families with few alternatives to sending their children to work to keep food on the table."

So gut wie zeitgleich und da frage ich mich, ob das wirklich alles nur ein Zufall sein kann! #LetzteGeneration

@AndrewHenry Sorry, I take that back. There is a shortage of eggs at local supermarkets in #Maine. No Nellie's organic, only Pete & Gerry's at $4.50 for 6. No "Nature's Promise" store brand eggs (which had been $3.50 for 6). Generic store eggs are $8 a dozen -- not much less than organic eggs.
