Humans always find their way back to their Mother.
No, not their biological mother (although if they have a good one, that too).
They find their way back to the Original Mother.
Mother Earth.
Mother Nature.
The Great Mother.
She goes by many names.
Yet every tribe, civilization, and people know her and yearn for her.
Even in the furthest reaches of city and technology far away from her wilderness, we see her features being coveted and even modeled after. Colors like bright cobalt and iron ore and soothing leafy greens. Faux wood grain textures etched in plastic attempting to harness her unique beauty. Even robots modeled after her beloved creatures, like dogs and birds and even people.
I think it is deeply ingrained in us, instinctual even, to yearn to be surrounded by her grace and beauty.
We have evolved alongside her for thousands of years, and our close ancestors millions before that.
They say the trees and being out in nature actually heals us, as they release certain chemicals that boost our immune systems when breathed in.
Our ecosystems around us work in tandem with us, adapting, growing, improving year after year.
We've been gifted minerals, metals, stones. Fire and sparks of lava and lightning. Water and healing from rains and rivers and oceans.
And we are utterly captivated, again and again, by her showy displays of life. Deep ocean mysteries, boiling hot volcanos, tumultous cyclones, deafening thunderstorms, and rolling earthquakes.
Despite these terrifying performances, often taking lives, we sit in awe, and even worship.
There is an unspoken agreement between us. This cycle we're all subjected to, whether we like it or not.
We all come from the Earth. Formed of the same atoms and materials she too holds.
And to the Earth we all must return. Given back into the dirt, to the ash, to the animals. Decomposing, giving everything we have, one last time. No one is the exception.
In turn we are reborn. Into the next generation. Of people. Of flowers. Of rain.
Often changing forms, but always part of the cycle.
Part of the ecosystem.
Part of the Mother...
As I sit here, staring at her lungs breathing life into our air we breathe, listening to her flying children sing songs on the wind, and feeling the warm rays of her family reaching out to caress my cheek, I am reminded.
Reminded that the Mother is here, right now, waiting patiently.
For us to stop and notice. For us to wake up. For us to return to her, one way or another. Open arms, as a loving mother does.
Without judgement. Without shame. Without question.
They say the Earth is populated by mothers and their children. Maybe that rings true in more than one way.
I return to my Mother in a million ways before she takes me in her arms forever. Sitting. Noticing. Enjoying. Helping. Protecting. Caring for.
And I hope everyone else can return to her too in small ways, before their last road trip home.
She will surely welcome you, over and over again. As many times as you need her. As many times as you are willing to reach for her.
Despite the scars, despite the depletion, despite forgetting her.
She loves you, endlessly.
I hope you can love her too.
