  2. Now live on stage @toroe from #dhall assembly at #c39c3 about #tei #digitalhumanities and how to encode the #hacket bible (it is also filmed so you can rewatch it on the ccc Media platform)! Of course also included costumary reference to @patrick_sahle , dracor and many great things about the excellent @TEIConsortium community. Happy to see this cross over! @DHd @eadh

  6. Nerd Alert: There will be a #DigitalHumanities Assembly within the #BitsUndBaeume Habitat at #39C3. We named it #DHall: Digital Humanities For All. Some people are already putting meetups and workshops together. Let me know if you want to contribute, or just create a proposal and add it to DHall. Check out the announcement: events.ccc.de/congress/2025/hu

You know I'm neither impatient nor an IT noob, but when trying to install #Kitsune on Debian 11 yesterday, I gave up after two hours.

The first hour passed while cargo compiled almost 1000 Rust packages. Fine, I guess this is what happens when you enter a new ecosystem.

The second hour was more infuriating because I failed to construct a valid configuration file for Kitsune. These are in a language called #dhall which seems to be inspired by Haskell.

I tried renaming the config.example.dhall and switching it to sqlite because I thought that for a test drive, installing PostgreSQL was overkill. So I copied the line from docs.joinkitsune.org/en/runnin and got this error message:

thread 'main' panicked at 'Failed to connect to database: Pool(Backend(ConnectionError(CouldntSetupConfiguration(DatabaseError(UnableToSendCommand, "invalid connection string: unexpected EOF")))))', kitsune/src/main.rs:94:6

Using the entire configuration example from that website results in the same error message.

  17. @cadey I like #dhall, but I've found that the personal use-cases I have for that it felt over engineered, a simple s-expression made the trick always. For other test, like for instance github CI yaml files, I found the types to be over-strict. So I stopped using it :( But #dhall is cool!

That's one of the main reasons I haven't moved to a split/ergo board myself.

I just built a new Rama Kara Soya (60% board) on the weekend and set it up as my Mac OS board as I was sick of trying to train my body to use my GMMK Pro which is my Windows board.
I have been slightly shifting the layout basically every day since to configure macros and the layers. A couple of keys at a time. I find this is easier than shifting a lot in one go.

Even then, I still mess up my typing a few times a day as my hands get used to the layout. Unfortunately, it takes time.

  19. Dhall is still one of the most underutilized tools for software development. I have my beefs with its autoformatter & I wish Nix support was easier, but everything else is excellent when compared to its alternatives. If you like types in your code, add it to your configuration too! Map some values where the repetition makes it hard to manage editing 200 little places. Pipe your Dhall out to YAML, JSON, TOML while your favorite tools lag on supporting Dhall natively. Share pure utility functions between config files, import parts of other configs to reduce duplication and complexity. #dhalllang

  20. @codeforchaos Yeah, it just wasn't easy to spot. I'm only familiar with certain parts of the operating system -- other parts, like logging in, I want to _just work_. I'm pretty unhappy about. Most configs, excluding #dhalllang, are stringly-typed so you have no clue what went wrong. Seems the big diff I had is after 10 failed attempts wait an hour.
