From the millions of soil samples collected over two and half decades, Kurita-san made a dedication of 729 portions (in the actual sange ritual only 25 flowers are used).
When finished, the soil was symbolically gathered up and scattered on the Byakusadan as a universal prayer.

Rather than simply mimicking the old festival tradition (20 giant lanterns parading with the shrine gods), Kyōto University of the Arts struck upon the idea of creating a separate event (Awata Daitōrō 粟田大燈呂) with a procession of floats based on myths, legends and manga.

Reikan-ji (霊鑑寺) is named after a sacred mirror enshrined in its main hall. The mirror was a relic of Nyoi-ji (如意寺/如意輪寺), a wealthy temple complex that originally stood on the site and spread all the way across the mountain (Nyoigadake 如意ヶ嶽, aka Daimonji-yama 大文字).

Eventually it was discovered that the carpenter, his health failing and worries about his son's work growing, had placed a statue of Kōshin in the central pillar. He asked the god to protect the construction project, but before his death failed to tell anyone what he had done.
Left unworshiped and forgotten the god no longer corrected the sloppy work of the carpenter's son and without the protective magic the structure drastically began to lean.

A more romantic origin story describes how Prince Shōtoku (聖徳太子 d.622) came to the Kyōto Basin to find lumber for the construction of Shitennō-ji (四天王寺).
In thanks for the wood felled he enshrined 3 grains of Buddha's ashes in a stupa, that later grew to become Hōkan-ji.Hōkan-ji's importance should not be underestimated, for many consider the temple to be the beginning of Buddhist culture in Kyōto (long before the city existed).

👉THE LEANING TOWER OF KYŌTO👈
Looming over the rooftops behind our Flower Teahouse is one of Kyōto's most iconic symbols...the 46m tall Yasaka-no-tō (八坂の塔).
The pagoda, last rebuilt in 1440, is all that remains of Hōkan-ji (法観寺), considered by some to be the city's oldest temple. Some theorize that the Yasaka clan, an immigrant family from the mainland (known for their horse breeding), founded Hōkan-ji as a worship site in 588.

Yasaka Kōshin-dō, founded in 887, is centre for the Kōshin faith.
Originally a folk religion, practitioners of Kōshin-shinkō (庚申信仰) believe that for a wish to come true it is necessary to sacrifice 1 desire. Desires are thus symbolically bound up as a Kukurizaru.
The 3 Wise Monkeys (三猿) are symbols of the Kōshin faith🙈🙉🙊
'See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil': Mizaru (見ざる), Kikazaru (聞かざる) and Iwazaru (言わざる).
