Familiarly known as Kōshin-san (庚申さん), he acted as principal image of worship for the complex rituals that made up Kōshin-shinkō.

Originally a folk religion, practitioners of Kōshin-shinkō (庚申信仰) believe that for a wish to come true it is necessary to sacrifice 1 desire. Desires are thus symbolically bound up as a Kukurizaru.
