Rather than simply mimicking the old festival tradition (20 giant lanterns parading with the shrine gods), Kyōto University of the Arts struck upon the idea of creating a separate event (Awata Daitōrō 粟田大燈呂) with a procession of floats based on myths, legends and manga.

One thing that will sadly be missing from this year's city schedule is the pre-sakura illuminations between Chion-in and Kiyomizu-dera.
In 2022 it was decided to indefinitely suspend the Higashiyama Hanatōro (東山花灯路) as a cost saving exercise.
Kyōto has been teetering on bankruptcy for many years, and despite the huge amount of money tourism brings to the city it was decided to pull the plug on public light-up events (for now).
