  1. so I rebooted my #Linux laptop after a software update last night & it shat itself and kernel panicked on boot… 🤔

    …because /boot was full 🤦‍♀️

so in… ⚹checks notes⚹ …2026 there’s no pre-flight check that confirms enough space on /boot to write the new initramfs, etc., before just YOLOing it and crapping out? and no auto-rollback to the previous kernel that’s already sitting there ready to be loaded? 🤪 #ThisIsFineDotGIF 🤪

yes, sure, I’m able to recover from this sort of shitfuckery (I’m sure most of y’all are too) – that’s not the point. non-computer-touchers are never gonna use Linux if they even occasionally have to be able to boot into a recovery session (or boot from a liveDVD) & fuck around in the terminal sudo rm-ing stuff to fix it (especially as they’ll likely be just trying random shit from online posts and they don’t have sufficient knowledge to work out what’s actually the right fix for their problem nor how to tweak as required to their particular context) #CatMashingKeyboardDotGIF

#YearOfLinuxOnTheDesktop is never gonna happen while this sort of thing is a regular part of the “user experience” 😕

  2. Windows borde vara lika lätt som Linux att installera
    (Det funkar för föräldrar också!)

  3. It's December of the year that I pondered whether this could be the Year of Linux on my desktop. Here's how the last nine months of that went: https://blog.beerriot.com/2025/12/08/year-of-linux-pt5/

  4. GPU crashing in the middle of a video call while you are debugging a thing with colleagues? fear not!

it's a simple matter of pulling in some open source binary blobs #blessed #yearoflinuxonthedesktop

  5. I've seen some varying opinions around #EndOf10 and #Linux and the inevitable #YearOfLinuxOnTheDesktop meme, and I want to chime in that this is a regular part of the OS lifecycle. Linux users might appear in a slow dribble otherwise, but we grow more rapidly when MS fumbles. I started Linux to get away from #WindowsME, and there were similar moods around #WindowsVista and #Windows8. The event is neither a joke nor a start of Linux supremacy, just a good opportunity.

  6. I don't even run Windows at home anymore now that I moved gaming over to my Mac, but even I hope Microsoft rethinks their release of Recall. I did have plans to replace my old gaming PC this year with a newer PC, but not anymore.

I do appreciate the security researchers who have poked holes in the design and already created things like TotalRecall. This lets us all see why it's going to be a bad idea before it really gets released.

I also really like that I've seen some other people asking apps they rely on for Linux support. If you don't need Windows anymore, there's no need to run it.

Yes, I know Recall is only available on a limited set of computers running the right hardware, and it can be turned off in settings. But how many people will remember to do that?

  7. In would REALLY like @pop_os_official to change that "Erase everything" in their installer. Or at least add "..on a drive of your choice" at the end.

Because it led me to manual partitioning while being impatient. Which led to me deleting the MBR from a data dump disk, that then barely made it back to the land of the living thanks to "testdisk" magic.

  8. @davidgerard Then I have news from one of your possible futures. Some number of updates after where you now, it may spontaneously stop working. If you do find yourself booting into text mode, try switching to another virtual console (Ctrl-Alt-F2 or F3 or whatever), logging in, and then modprobe amdgpu. In my case, sddm immediately takes over the display and I see the graphical login screen.

Now I need someone from my possible future to tell me what to do next. Maybe the ramdisk image used to start booting doesn't include amdgpu? Maybe full-disk encryption is related?

  9. The automated upgrade processes often doesn't get enough testing, and leaves the system with some obsolete package still installed, or some new package missing which is required by a new feature.

Please report these things even if it's easy to fix it yourself. Non-technical end users may have to reinstall the whole system, and lose confidence in the usability of Linux.
