Does anyone have an mp3 file of someone speaking the words "X Card" they would be willing to share? I want to enable this in my discord soundboard, but if I use my own voice, it won't be as effective as if I use the voice of someone who isn't currently in the game.
Won't be used in recordings or podcasts without discussing with you first. Will be used in commercial paid-GM games.

Der neue Dungeon Master's Guide enthält Lines and Veils und die X-Karte

aber: "The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide mentions no specific tools by name, and it gives no indication that another source could better inform players. These two facts combined lead me to feel like Dungeons and Dragons is deliberately trying to distance itself from contributions other RPG creators have made to the industry"

The (current) Vampire the Masquerade "Bleed" published material, and Vampire fans response - both positive and negative seems... Incredibly messy.

I was one of those who thought that the X card or veils were not necessary in the role, that those things were to talk about them as people and that was enough. Until I watched the dog episode in Full Metal Alchemist.

CW: Re: Safety Tools
It is very common to see people using “Do you use #Xcard?” as a proxy for, or shibboleth prompt for, “Do you take safety seriously?” And, I mean, all love to them, there are a lot of horror stories out there. I’m not trying to invalidate their search for safety. I’m not coming at this from the anti-safety perspective.
I get how I can come across as “people should just talk to each other” but there is no “just”. Talking is difficult, esp in roleplaying. The OOC gesture might seem silly but it’s so important to have. It’s not a panacea and we have had missteps. As an aside, sometimes it’s obvious without the gesture that a protest is OOC. The gesture is just an optional way to make it extra clear, and, it has so often been served that purpose admirably. I’m never, ever “you didn’t say ‘Simon says’” being a stickler to get people to use the gesture. It’s a tool, not a restriction. Buuut I can be a bit slow so it helps me grok what’s going on.
I just have the reaction that people can sometimes advertise “we use X-card” as a cargo cult approach to proclaiming safety, and then not really deliver.

CW: Re: Safety Tools
A safeword means stop, something’s wrong, whereas the #Xcard is meant to let you keep going with just the subtlest and politest of edits. It’s like an airbag that lets you keep driving after it has blown up. I can’t even…
It’s like… yes, the “try a different way”-card in Archipelago is a genius ludeme. For Archipelago, and its wikilike “co-edit the aesthetics” gameplay. It is part of what makes Archipelago a good game and can definitely be ported over to some other games that have a similar approach to stances and storywriting. But relying on it as if it were a safety tool is…
And if you do have real safety in place, the X-card is complementary at best and confusing at worst.
Uh, this is a never-ending rant from me. It’s like a 24/7 “rant vs X-card and #veils” station that I try to not tune into too often.
Some peeps have tried to push the idea of the X-card as primarily an aesthetics editor a la Archipelago. Use it early and often, use it because you just don’t feel like a particular element that day, use it very freely etc. And I think that might be a good tool for some games. If that did become the primary perception of the X-card that would be a welcome evolution. It could also mean that it could have some safety use, with a lessened “I am revealing a kryptonite” factor, as a complement to real, proper safety use. It would be instantly recognizeable
- as not appropriate for all games, and
- not a robust safety tool that’s enough on it’s own
I think the name “X-card” is burnt, though, for that, but who knows.
Maybe a better response to “this game uses X-card” than “In that case, I need to excuse myself” is “Cool, but how do we signal that we need to discuss OOC or take a break?” i.e. see the X-card as a game mechanic, not a meta-game safety tool. I dunno.

A guy was being a bully on a small forum (the typical bbcode joint), I asked him to please stop and when I returned to the thread his posts, and my post begging him to stop his picking on me, were gone from the thread. Maybe he was a mod? It feels spooky and dissociative that it just disappeared (this is also part of the many reasons why I’m not sold on #Xcard and #veils) but on the other hand, I hope he will let up now. That was all that I wanted.♥
