  1. Today a hike in the mountains above #ValleVigezzo 🇮🇹 in #Piemonte. Still quite some snow up here at 1,300 metres a.s.l. this time of the year. And there’s always a #Vigezzina narrow gauge train close by, taking me from, and to, #Domodossola. A 1950s ABe8/8 with opening windows is working today’s afternoon local.

  2. S. Maria Maggiore on the #Centovalli🇨🇭#Vigezzina 🇮🇹 line earlier today: this is the #Domodossola to #Re afternoon local, worked by an 1950s ABe8/8 unit. The sunlit summits of the Monte Rosa mountains can be seen in the distance.

  3. A ride over the #Vigezzina 🇮🇹 narrow gauge line earlier this week. I travelled on the afternoon regional for #Domodossola, a service, on the Italian section of the line, worked by a 1950s #SSIF ABe8/8 unit. It’s got opening windows, very much to the photographer’s delight.

  4. On the #Domodossola 🇮🇹 to #Locarno🇨🇭#Vigezzina #Centovalli narrow gauge line today. I’m travelling on a #VigezzoVision #Panoramico train, in a first row seat, right next to the engine driver. This comes with cab-ride views on the line ahead, and on the beautiful scenery. (The seat reservation fee was 4.00 EUR.)

  5. The highest point on the #Centovalli🇨🇭#Vigezzina 🇮🇹 line from #Locarno to #Domodossola: S. Maria Maggiore, where we saw #SSIF unit ABe8/8 #22 #Ticino today. The unit, built in the 1950s, was working train #R262, the afternoon regional from #Re. And there’s a nice train station café.

  6. On board a brand new narrow-gauge #Stadler unit on the #Vigezzina line today. This is the 16:51 #Locarno 🇨🇭 to #Domodossola 🇮🇹 “Diretto” service. The speed metre on display might require some additional calibration though: the train moves at a leisurely pace, a far cry from the advertised 150 kph 😉.

  7. S. Maria Maggiore 🇮🇹 on the #Vigezzina narrow gauge line at lunchtime today: pictured is the 10:51 #Locarno to #Domodossola service, stopping here right before noon and worked by a #Centovalli Express unit. The other bonus for the railfan: the plinthed tramcar, opposite the station building.

  8. A day out, enjoying spring and the little trains of the #Centovalli🇨🇭#Vigezzina 🇮🇹 line. Trains seen, or travelled on, range from the 1950s ABe8/8 workhorses to the brand-new #Stadler units, doing their first revenue earning workings these days, on the Swiss part of the line.

  9. #Camedo is the last station in #Switzerland for international westbound trains on the #Centovalli🇨🇭#Vigezzina 🇮🇹 line. #SSIF unit ABe8/8 23 “Ossola” was in charge of the 17:50 departure from #Locarno to #Domodossola today, pictured here while making a very brief stop at Camedo.

  10. A day out in, and above, Valle #Vigezzo 🇮🇹, its villages and pastures. Winter retreats to the highest mountains. Where the snow has melted away, the first heralds of spring make an appearance. And the narrow-gauge #trenino of the #Centovalli🇨🇭#Vigezzina 🇮🇹 railway is never far away.

  11. Over the narrow-gauge #Vigezzina 🇮🇹 line in northern #Piemonte with the #Re to #Domodossola afternoon Regional. This is a charming #SSIF ABe8/8 unit, built in the late 1950s with a 1980s interior. It comes with opening windows, ideal for (quickly) taking a few fresh air pictures.

  12. From the #Locarno🇨🇭 area, where the mainline trains run alongside the Lago Maggiore waterfront, westwards with the little trains of the #Centovalli #Vigezzina line to #Re 🇮🇹 for a visit of the Sanctuary and for lunch. Our train is a #Vevey ABe4/6 narrow gauge unit.

  13. I’m really a fan of the little trains on the #Vigezzina 🇮🇹 #Centovalli🇨🇭 way railway, in particular of those with opening windows. #SSIF ABe6/6 “Sempione” worked today’s afternoon Regional to #Domodossola, under a perfectly blue sky.

  22. The #Locarno🇨🇭to #Domodossola 🇮🇹 railway is currently celebrating 100 years of its existence. Recently, a locally brewed “birra cento” #Centovalli #Vigezzina beer has become available, on the trains and in a local supermarket right next to the railway line. Well then, cheers! 🍻

  23. Most regional services on the Italian side of the #Vigezzina 🇮🇹#Centovalli🇨🇭line are being worked by elderly railcars built in the 1950s and 1960s. They come with opening windows, very much to the photographer’s delight, and to the one of all other passengers on a hot summer day.

Maria Maggiore, the highest point on the #Centovalli #Vigezzina line. Mt. Gridone is visible in the distance.

    I took this picture the day before yesterday, with ABe8/8 23 “Ossola” passing the stone arch bridge at #Malesco shortly before 7:00 pm.

  26. A day on the #Centovalli🇨🇭 #Vigezzina 🇮🇹 line. The #SSIF #ABe8/8 units, built 1956, are still going strong, including on the #Locarno to #Domodossola “Diretto” services. A “Birra 100”, brewed locally for the line’s centenary and for purchase from the #minibar trolley, comes in handy.

  28. Seen earlier today on the #SSIF #Vigezzina 🇮🇹 narrow-gauge line: unit ABe6/6 35 “Verbano” (built in 1968) is working the #Re to #Domodossola afternoon regional service. The train makes a short stop at #Malesco station. Mount #Gridone is visible in the distance.

What a blessing to hike in the mountains high up above the #ValVigezzo 🇮🇹 in #Piemonte in bright sunshine … and to take a ride on the “trenino” of the #Vigezzina railway to #Domodossola - in an old class ABe8/8 trainset of the late 1950s with #FensterAuf opening windows. 😉

  31. Good morning from the #Centovallina🇨🇭#Vigezzina 🇮🇹 railway. Leaving #Locarno, I’m the only passenger on the 08:51 “Diretto” to #Domodossola. From the rear of the train one gets a “faux cab-view” impression of the line.
    At “Olgia2” crossover we meet another #SSIF ABe8/8 unit. These lovely trainsets were built in the late 1950s. Their refurbished interior design comes with a 1980s feel. 😉

  32. The evening #Locarno🇨🇭to #Domodossola 🇮🇹 “Diretto” service worked by an #SSIF ABe8/8 unit - built in the late 1950s - seen at Ponte Brolla a moment ago.
    And: the #Centovalli #Vigezzina railway line is 100 years old today. It opened on 25 November 1923. Well then: buon compleanno!

  33. Another wonderful autumn day: a perfect moment for a ride on the scenic #Vigezzina 🇮🇹 #Centovalli🇨🇭line. Today #SSIF unit ABe8/8 “Ticino” is working the 15:25 “diretto” from #Domodossola to #Locarno. The train comes with opening windows, very much to the photographers’ delight.

  34. Photos I’ve taken a few days ago at #Domodossola 🇮🇹, the western terminus of the #Vigezzina #Centovalli line. The narrow gauge trains leave from one level below the standard gauge tracks, just like at #Locarno🇨🇭at the line’s eastern end.

  35. Lovely #Re 🇮🇹 station on the #Vigezzina line earlier today. A catering trolley ☕️ 🍻🍷will be loaded here onto the mid-day “diretto” from #Locarno🇨🇭 to #Domodossola 🇮🇹, composed of a pair of #SSIF ABe4/6 units.

  36. “Meet” on the #Vigezzina 🇮🇹 narrow-gauge railway line earlier today: #SSIF units ABe8/8 “Ossola” (built 1959) and ABe6/6 “Piemonte” (from 1968) pass each other at Orcesco-Gagnone station, working the last #Locarno to #Domodossola through service of the day and a local to #Re respectively.

Several through trains between #Domodossola 🇮🇹 and #Locarno🇨🇭 on the 100 year old #Vigezzina #Centovalli narrow-gauge line are currently being worked by lovely #SSIF class ABe8/8 units from the late 1950s. This is due to equipment shortages: the “Panoramic“ units aren’t operating right now because of some technical issues.

  38. The evening service on the #Locarno🇨🇭 to #Domodossola 🇮🇹 narrow gauge #Centovalli #Vigezzina line is usually worked by a lovely 1950s unit. Tonight #SSIF ABe8/8 #21 “Roma” is doing the honours. It comes with opening windows, obviously a mixed bag on a rainy day like today. 😉

  39. Evening on the #Centovalli 🇨🇭#Vigezzina 🇮🇹 line, west of #Locarno: the last through service of the day with destination #Domodossola is usually being worked by an #SSIF ABe8/8 unit, built in 1959. And: this train comes with opening windows!
