  1. @CurlyParakeet

And there's a whole order of these #insects, all generally referred to as "thrips". Here is one of the largest species, Idolothrips spectrum. It feeds on dead Eucalyptus leaves, and this one was in my garden in #canberra

  2. Today I went on a local native plant garden tour and, perhaps predictably, immediately got distracted by bugs. Look at this log positively teeming with pretty red thrips eating the fungus!

  3. So far there is only one coneflower blooming in the garden. It has attracted hordes of 1) carpet beetles (which feed on pollen as adults); 2) thrips; and 3) minute pirate bugs and 4) whirligig mites, which both eat the thrips.

  4. Pals, I am very sad I could not find a weevil for Weevil Wednesday. But I *did* find thrips for #ThripsThursday! Found in young maple leaves around the community garden in Christie Pits. Look how skinny it is!

  5. It's #ThripsThursday and I've learned about a new plant to check for thrips: lamb's ear (_Stachys byzantina_)!

I am familiar with wool carder bees using it, but didn't think to look for other bugs on it.

These were just in people's front yards and they could easily have seen me suspiciously scoping out their plants and accosted me, and if so I was *totally* ready to enthuse at them about thrips. Perhaps sensing this, no one did.

  6. Happy #ThripsThursday!

The Spiraea × vanhouttei are blooming and attracting a host of insects that feed on them, like dermestid beetles—and this charming yellow thrips.

  7. Is it…after so long…could it finally be… #ThripsThursday???

Possibly _Aeolothrips_, found on grasses at Scarborough Civic Centre. I think of thrips as plant pests, but this one apparently is a predator.

  8. #bloomscrolling × a rare #ThripsThursday: the white campion in a local pollinator garden was covered with little black thrips! Of course I had to get a pic for you all.

  9. Oh shit, it's #ThripsThursday!

I've seen these candy-cane-like thrips on silver maple a couple times. At least, I'm pretty sure they're thrips. If anyone has a better idea, suggest it on #iNaturalist?

  10. Second-instar nymph of Haplothrips subtilissimus inside a gall on dodder that was made by a weevil (it's complicated). I have no idea how it got in there. Maybe hatched from an egg inserted into developing gall by parent (thrips have serrated ovipositors). Species is reported to be predaceous on mites and various arthropod eggs but in this case perhaps was consuming the beetle or one of its ectoparasites (wasps). #thrips #Thysanoptera #entomology #insect #galls #nature
