#vinylcollection ...#ThePopGroup was one of those super influential, but super eccentric and strange bands for which it's difficult to explain how much of a titan-5 brain-screw they could be. That a band in the late seventies and early '80s could meld Punk, dub, free jazz, and numerous strains of avant-garde noise with a political message that makes Rage Against the Machine seem like Barbra Streisand...is an achievement.

Best Mark Stewart quote from recent obituaries: "Arguments are good". I definitely subscribe to this world view. I saw the Pop Group in 1978, supporting Patti Smith at the Manchester Apollo, the infamous gig when anyone who was someone was there. I was there. I got a shortlived boyfriend to pay the train tickets and I bunked in free by waiting backstage until the group arrived and then literally begged Patti Smith to let me in. She arranged it.
Ive still got the gig poster, but my poster doesnt have any pictures of Ms Smith on it, its just text (similar to this image), peeled off a wall in the pouring rain after the gig. RIP Mark S, their set was very impressive if you were 18 and fresh out of the blocks.#markstewart #thepopgroup #newagesteppers #onusound #pattismith

Gutted by friend Mark Stewart's passing this AM. Doesn't seem possible. He, full of life & free, keeping us honest. Death, unforgiving & stark, seizing light.
