Apart from “Interview with the Vampire”/”The Vampire Lestat”, this Australian TV series is so far my favourite of this year: “The Newsreader”.
It’s about a news broadcasting company in the 1980ies, the characters are very interesting, the acting is excellent and there are several topics of diversity, and social commentary on subjects like racism, mental illness, homophobia and more. The series has 3 seasons, with 18 episodes total.

I already promoted The Newsreader [Australian series all about news' channels and two journalists [Anna Torv <3 and Sam Reid] in the 80s!] with its seasons 1 and 2 in my #rebcommendations - and now season 3 has been released! \o/////
Very well developed characters and many strong female roles without leaving true context of the 80s, neither concerning feminism nor the world politics during those years.
I'm loving it.

The Newsreader [2021 - 2023] is an australian series featuring the gorgeous Anna Torv. It plays in the 80ies and currently is screened on #arte - I just started episode 1 [of overall 3 seasons! :D] but yeah, it's Anna Torv... <3 Available in EN, DE, and FR.
Seems to depict the working [friendship - edit:] relationship between a "difficult" experienced news speaker [Torv] and a newsroom freshman [Sam Read].

I loved #TheNewsreader. Great series. Was surprised it wasn't more popular and that it was relegated to BBC2.

tried to watch this when it first aired (2021) and was instantly transported back to the bad old days when i had to work for a living, when every place i worked was knee deep in sexist, racist bullies. William McInnes, as news manager Cunningham, is all this in a nutshell.
The story begins in January 1986. The more things change, the more they stay the same.it’s not “entertaining”, but maybe it is something worthwhile just the same?
perhaps i’m in a better mood (post covid lockdown) but have given it another go, and must say i’m impressed with the writing so far (half way thru episode 2). Like baz luhrmann’s movie “Australia” it seems to have a lot of ouchiness and truth to it.
Anna Torv (as newsreader Helen Norville) and Sam Reid (as Dale Jennings) are giving fine, nuanced performances.
[Late Edit: key events of 1986 mentioned include space shuttle challenger; russell st bombing; halley’s comet; and lindy chamberlain trial (a truly foul episode in australian history).
AIDS is becoming a global issue, and so homophobia/ internalised homophobia are one of the themes in season 1 of The Newsreader. - the quality of this show has blown me away] -
Horrifically bierasing and biphobic statements by Leigh Sales & Lisa Millar on The ABC TV show-linked The Newsreader Podcast Episode 1 regarding Helen & Dale's relationship. Shame on the ABC for boosting stigma about the B in LGBTQIA+, causing real harm to bisexual people.
Update: the wonderful, diverse, creative team behind the show have responded to flagging of this, and the offensive section of Sales & Millar's podcast is GONE 😊

Just watched the first episode in French of season 1 of #thenewsreader #Lanouvelle in French, and I have to say I am already hooked, The series tell the story of behind the scene of a news room in Australia in 1986. Anna Torv that we have seen in #Fringe plays Helen Norville a woman newsreader who has to fight misogyny and sexism in the mid 1980´s. I read some where there is going to be a season 2 that is great news, #AnnaTorv
