Looks like the novelty of #TheForkiverse has worn off and the amount of active members has dropped from ~3000 a few months ago, to ~800 now. There are a total of 10k users registered.

That raises the question why this happens. 10k users from an established community should establish a network effect, I'd think. So, why are they leaving? Has the joke worn off? Is Mastodon still too hard in UX? Something else?

I think this should be a useful case study for Mastodon developers all around, especially if it is UX related.

If we were to ask people across the generations for an example of a friend, how far apart from one another would they be? Not waiting or even if thinking of "likes" but just people making a connection for a time over something they share. I'd been on Mastodon (fosstodon.org) for about a year but it was too niche and i didn't make enough connections. I'm making a few now and it's making the internet great again. #forkiverse

Why?

A) Screen readers will see a bunch of letters that doesn't make one word and read out each individual letter. Which makes it hard to understand.

B) For us sighted people, it is also easier to read.

If you're posting an image or video on here, please remember to add a text description for people who cannot see. Blind people use the internet through screen reader software which reads text out loud.

The level of detail needed depends on the image, but generally you should try to explain whatever is important and relevant in the picture.

If you forget a description, just edit the post and add it in afterwards!

A month ago there was a lot of buzz on the Fediverse about a new Mastodon server set up by prominent journalists: #TheForkiverse.

There was a rush of sign-ups: nearly 10,000 users in a couple of weeks. People new to the Fediverse, willing to try it out.

It's been hard to gauge how active it still is... so this morning I re-downloaded @IceCubesApp so I could browse their local timeline.

I've been liking and replying to recent posts. Just doing my little in making them feel seen and welcome 🤗

Is there a way to see what's trending in #theforkiverse? The only option I'm seeing is showing me posts from all over the Fediverse.

#Caturday #forkiversecats I just threw this cat contraption tower run thing together, and safe to say it's a hit. It's not safe at all though as it's 6am on a Sunday morning; so I haven't used the drill yet to fasten anything together. More pics at @[email protected] later to save these guys bandwidth. Can we subscribe/donate to #theforkiverse #forkiverse ? if not possible I guess I take my hand out my pocket and renew/sub to Platformer and Search Engine but I'd prefer to donate for upkeep of here.

So I've followed someone on bluesky with a high public profile but they display on #theforkiverse as only having 2 followers. On bluesky they have 3.4k followers.

Is the two count of follows on theforkiverse a count of forkiversian followers only?

@haunted_refrigerator This is a bit of an aside but I've thought it would be cool to host some kind of #theforkiverse discussion whenever new episodes come out for the folks on this instance. We're obv. fans and interested.

It could be a link to the ep., a tag, and engagement by the founders, w folks chiming in as they listen. I, for one, would enjoy that kind of thing if there's a longer term outlook to the server. (Or for all I know, maybe it is happening already?

#theforkiverse random question. For all the conversation about big social media companies being bad for youth mental health (and well, all of us), how do we feel about LinkedIn? I feel like many professional spaces are pushing for constant engagement which feels a lot to me like an adult and professional version of other social media platforms.

@evan Evan you're right! Trying to speak for the "entire" Fediverse is a major lack of System Awareness. These self-appointed experts are often just trying to override a newcomer's experience to satisfy their own need for control!

I call this a sign of low emotional hygiene. To help folks protect their peace, I suggest these 3 System Updates:

1. Boundary Calibration: Deleting a comment is a high-value act of Self-Respect

2. Energy Filtering: You don't owe anyone your Circuitry just because you share a digital space

3. Silent Power: A hard block is the best firewall against entitlement

We don't need to argue with these glitches; we just need to refine our filters. If someone is being disrespectful, blocking is a valid tool for keeping your internal world clear.

@Casey @kevin @pj As someone who's trying to shift from meta/tiktok over to the fediverse how can I both be considerate when it comes to posting videos and pictures at the same time as being respectful of the storage capacities of the Forkiverse? Trying to be a good forkizen while still using social media as I'm used to. I have a different instance with a pixelfed account but I'm trying to live in the "one account to rule them all" promise of the fediverse.
