  11. I asked Gemini a tax question, and it gave a plausibly nuanced answer, which was completely wrong. A wrong answer with lots of detail!

I asked if Ukraine’s Come Back Alive was US tax deductible. I didn’t think so, and couldn’t find the any info on the website, but I wanted to check. The correct answer is no.

Gemini said, yes if you go through a nonexistent US intermediary 501.c(3) and happily gave me a website and tax id.

The website (a dot-org) doesn’t exist. Google Search suggests a dot-com version instead, which is apparently some Meal Team Six podcast.

  29. Happy #TaxDay to all who pay, and an even happier day to those who will receive a refund. Now that I am semi-retired (still taking consulting side-gigs) my taxes are a lot easier - so I have been using freetaxusa.com and it is awesome, easy and though I’m sure they harvest some of my info, the convenience and UX are hard to beat. Site askes me questions, then fills out my forms for me. It files electronically, lets me set the date for a bank transfer, and then confirms my returns have been sent and accepted. My long-time tax accountant informed me several years ago that their annual fee was going to double, so I bailed. Now I file my federal returns for free and pay $14.99 to file my state returns. I’m saving hundreds of dollars annually. Sweet👏 #IRS

  39. It was excruciating and took / hours online, using an online tax service for Seniors to go through every step needed for federal and then for state. If I had not been using my own computer with a printer and scanner I would have been forced to scan and save some documents like my W2 form and then get them saved on a flash drive and then plug in that drive to the computer I was using in order to upload documents required.

Basically if you don’t have a computer and printer with scanner, and you are not adept with computers and software, you can’t do your taxes in the US. That’s why a “service” like HR Block racks in a LOT of profit yearly. (We had caregivers I helped scan documents to take to their tax preparer. They averaged less than $22,000 gross pay per year and had to pay $100 to a tax service.)

It’s grim for anyone who receives any documented income in the US. And I’d guess with the theft of vital records for each American, there will be more tentacles of surveillance and schemes to drain more money over these next few years. Aren’t I just a ray of sunshine, ay?
