The #performance of #syslog_ng is not a #joke. However, some announcements are safer to be made on April 1st, just to make sure that people think before they expect 7 million EPS from a single syslog-ng instance in #production :-) Well, in a few years...

One of my most popular #syslog_ng repo on @fedora Copr is for #AmazonLinux 2023. However, I have never received any issue reports or feature requests. Is it something I should keep working on?

Last week I asked in a blog about #openssl 4 support and experiences:
https://www.syslog-ng.com/community/b/blog/posts/support-for-openssl-4-0
We received a detailed answer, and also a pull request to the #syslog_ng #GitHub repo. Of course, more investigation is needed, but syslog-ng now compiles with openssl 4 🤩

Although #OpenSSL 4.0 released just two weeks ago, the syslog-ng project has already received a #GitHub issue complaining that we do not support it. So, before we would allocate too much effort on it: what should we expect?

On #AprilFoolsDay, I shared that #syslog_ng can reach 7 million EPS. This test lab result was in part possible thanks to a few #performance enhancements coming to syslog-ng version 4.12.

Version 4.11.0 of #syslog_ng contains contributions from #Databricks related to #OAuth2 authentication. Recently, they published a blog about how this enables their customers to send logs to their data lake using syslog-ng and the #OpenTelemetry protocol.

Why "#syslog_ng can do 7 million EPS" was announced on #AprilFoolsDay? It is a completely valid result. However, it was measured not in a #production, but in a #laboratory environment.
https://peter.czanik.hu/posts/new-toy-1st-of-april-syslog-ng-performance-tests/
So, it's an absolutely stunning result, just impossible in production.
-
Almost 15 years ago, Balabit had a campaign, stating that #syslog_ng could process 650k messages a second. Now I am happy to present 7 #million #EPS (events per second). Timing the announcement to April 1 is not a coincidence :-) #AprilFoolsDay

I'm investigating a regression that appeared after upgrading #OpenJDK in a setup where #syslog_ng communicates with a #Riemann server (a Java application).
My investigation led me to a C library (riemann-c-client, used by syslog-ng) that uses #GnuTLS to establish a mutually authenticated TLS connection to the Java service. The library provides a CLI utility that allows me to reproduce the problem, which suggests that the issue lies in this library rather than in syslog-ng itself.

With a bit of delay, but #syslog_ng 4.11.0 is now available in @fedora #Rawhide. Support for #snmp is enabled again.
-
@opensuse I also updated the @fedora #Rawhide package, and according to the syslog-ng page on #repology, it's already there: https://repology.org/project/syslog-ng/versions
However, Rawhide still had #syslog_ng 4.10.2, when I checked a few minutes ago...

Version 4.11 of #syslog_ng will feature a brand-new #Kafka source. While it is being tested and reviewed, we are working on reducing the number of open issues. What should be #fixed next in syslog-ng?

If you want to test the new #Kafka source from the upcoming #syslog_ng release, there is now an easy way if you are on @opensuse / #SLES or @fedora / #RHEL (and compatibles). Just use my syslog-ng git snapshot repo:

Is there anyone still using #HDFS? Not just with #syslog_ng, but at all. I'm curious, as the HDFS destination is the last #Java-based driver in syslog-ng.
Nobody responded to my related posts for years, so 4.11 will be the last release to have it.

One of the most requested syslog-ng feature was file size based log rotation. It is now available as part of the #syslog_ng 4.10 release:

The next #syslog_ng release will feature a brand new @ApacheKafka source. You can already test this if you do not mind building the syslog-ng package yourself. Luckily it's easy and does not require developer knowledge:
-
A long-waited feature for #syslog_ng, the #Kafka source, is getting ready soon. The development is still in progress, but you can already try it, and it is worth the effort. How? Using the very same tool the syslog-ng #testing and release process relies on.
-
The blank() filter of #syslog_ng is a filter function with a descriptive name: it selects empty or undefined name-value pairs. While most of the functionalities that blank filter provides are available long time ago, using this new filter makes configurations easier to understand.

What are your options, if you want to have #syslog_ng up and running on #AIX?
- AIX #ToolBox by #IBM now includes syslog-ng #OpenSource
- compile the latest code from source
- syslog-ng PE by OneIdentity if you need commercial supporthttps://www.syslog-ng.com/community/b/blog/posts/syslog-ng-in-aix-toolbox-for-open-source-software

The syslog-ng stats-exporter() allows you to collect syslog-ng #statistics using #Prometheus. Version 4.10 of #syslog_ng added options to ensure that all related options of syslog-ng-ctl are now available in stats-exporter() too.

Support for #debian #Trixie is now available in #syslog_ng, for now in the #nightly repository. Updated instructions are now available in the syslog-ng blog:

Do you run #FreeBSD 15? The #syslog_ng project needs your help! We could not reproduce in-house, but there might be a bug in syslog-ng 4.9.0 related to #inotify on FreeBSD 15. Could you test it in your environment?

Whenever I present #syslog_ng at a conference or at a booth, people often ask me why should they use syslog-ng instead of one of its #competitors. So let me summarize what the users and developers of syslog-ng consider as its most important #values.
