Good news for those reading my #syslog_ng #openssl 4.0 blog at the original publication date: version 4.12 of syslog-ng is now available, and openssl 4.0 is supported without backporting patches:

For many years, I didn’t think that #Tor could be useful for me. However, I’ve recently found a Gist on #GitHub that describes how you can use it to #harden #syslog_ng on #FreeBSD. And while I have yet to try it, at least now I have a reason to test Tor.

We are removing #HDFS support from #syslog_ng, the last driver written in #Java. As a #scream test, I started to disable Java support in syslog-ng on @opensuse and @fedora. Let us know, if you use the Java destination with your own code!

Choose your poison: Up until version 4.12, when #syslog_ng ran into an error jumping to a saved #systemd journal position, it read the #journal from the beginning. With the latest syslog-ng version, you can configure what happens in case of such an error.

Recently I was asked if #syslog_ng supports #Ubuntu 26.04 (Ubuntu Resolute).
Yes, and with the arrival of the syslog-ng 4.12.0 release we also provide ready-to-use packages for it. The release notes mention it, and info is in the #Readme on #GitHub.

A last selfie before I give my #syslog_ng talk at the @passthesaltcon conference in Lille. This time I wear my "The Swiss Army Knife of Logging" t-shirt I helped designing many years ago :-)
-
Day two of @passthesaltcon is starting soon! As usual, I'm wearing a #syslog_ng t-shirt 😍 As you might see on my face, I'm a bit sleepy. I was up and talking to fellow speakers up until almost midnight 😁😴
-
Version 4.12.0, the latest version of #syslog_ng is now also available in #FreeBSD ports. A huge thanks goes to Cy Schubert for committing it.
As usual, @freshports has more info on #syslog_ng in ports, including links to related commits: https://www.freshports.org/sysutils/syslog-ng/

Second day of the @opensuse conference in Nürnberg. Today I give a talk about how the syslog-ng project is using @obshq (#openSUSE build service).
Of course I'm wearing a #syslog_ng t-shirt :-) It's a test print. The logo is a bit oversized. However that's perfect when on stage: it's well visible even from a distance.
-
I'm in #Nürnberg for the @opensuse #conference. As you can see, I already picked up my year 2026 t-shirt, and I'm wearing my 2016 t-shirt :-) Tomorrow I'll give a talk about #syslog_ng and the #openSUSE Build Service (@obshq).
-
Version 4.12.0 of syslog-ng is not yet available in #FreeBSD ports. If you need the latest #syslog_ng quickly, you can also use my test repo from https://github.com/czanik/freebsd/tree/master/syslog-ng4-devel This is what is normally committed to ports with minimal modifications. Or wait a bit more for the official commit.

Last week #syslog_ng 4.12.0 was released. It comes now with RHEL RPMs next to DEB packages. My versioned #RHEL / #Fedora and #openSUSE / #SLES repos are still prepared:
Note that my RHEL 10 build failed and needs investigation.

On my way from Budapest to Nürnberg, for the @opensuse conference. I took the train, as it's faster and cheaper than flying there. See you soon at #oSC26 :-)
For my syslog-ng & @obshq talk I'll wear a #syslog_ng t-shirt, but on the first day I'll be in a 2016 oSC t-shirt :-)

Today, the #syslog_ng team released three different syslog-ng versions, which provided a good opportunity to wear my “#Release is coming” t-shirt. This coordinated release is due to an #SQL injection security bug fix, even if most likely it affects less than a handful of people:

#OpenSSL 4.0 was released just over a month ago. So, how is its support progressing in #syslog_ng? Well, #Git master already supports it, and the patch is easy to #backport. At the same time, syslog-ng version 4.12 will support OpenSSL 4.0 out of the box.

You asked for it, we ship it: #syslog_ng #container based on an #RPM-based Linux distro, in our case: @almalinux.
https://www.syslog-ng.com/community/b/blog/posts/nightly-syslog-ng-containers-based-on-alma-linux
It was announced just a week ago, still using git snapshot packages, but there are already hundreds of downloads. Share your #feedback!

On April’s fool’s day, I shared that #syslog_ng can reach 7 #million #EPS. This test lab result was in part possible thanks to a few performance enhancements coming to syslog-ng version 4.12.

How can you #learn #syslog_ng? There are many possibilities, depending on your time and budget. Possibilities range from #tutorial series through reading the syslog-ng #documentation to instructor-led #training. Find out which one is for you!

For many years, the #syslog_ng project provided #container images based on #Debian. Most of our users run syslog-ng on #RHEL & compatibles, and have asked for an #RPM-based container. So, nightly containers based on @almalinux are now also available.

Yesterday I realized that the #FreeBSD 13.5 vm use for syslog-ng development and testing is end of life. So, wearing my favorite @FreeBSD #daemon t-shirt I rebuilt my environment on FreeBSD 15.0, and even successfully built #syslog_ng from a git snapshot 😉

The #performance of #syslog_ng is not a #joke. However, some announcements are safer to be made on April 1st, just to make sure that people think before they expect 7 million EPS from a single syslog-ng instance in #production :-) Well, in a few years...

One of my most popular #syslog_ng repo on @fedora Copr is for #AmazonLinux 2023. However, I have never received any issue reports or feature requests. Is it something I should keep working on?

Last week I asked in a blog about #openssl 4 support and experiences:
https://www.syslog-ng.com/community/b/blog/posts/support-for-openssl-4-0
We received a detailed answer, and also a pull request to the #syslog_ng #GitHub repo. Of course, more investigation is needed, but syslog-ng now compiles with openssl 4 🤩
-
Although #OpenSSL 4.0 released just two weeks ago, the syslog-ng project has already received a #GitHub issue complaining that we do not support it. So, before we would allocate too much effort on it: what should we expect?

Version 4.11.0 of #syslog_ng contains contributions from #Databricks related to #OAuth2 authentication. Recently, they published a blog about how this enables their customers to send logs to their data lake using syslog-ng and the #OpenTelemetry protocol.

Why "#syslog_ng can do 7 million EPS" was announced on #AprilFoolsDay? It is a completely valid result. However, it was measured not in a #production, but in a #laboratory environment.
https://peter.czanik.hu/posts/new-toy-1st-of-april-syslog-ng-performance-tests/
So, it's an absolutely stunning result, just impossible in production.
