Just found out that the 21 Feb. #stopTheBleed class in San Francisco is internal only (although it was listed as "walk in" on the site).

Alameda County is supposed to have a class in the future but no dates yet.

@jeffowski Interesting thing I learned in Stop the Bleed class - a properly applied tourniquet is TIGHT. It will HURT. It will hurt so much that if the person you applied it to is still conscious, they will be begging you to take the tourniquet off. Don't take it off. Another thing I learned in the class is that it's ok to leave the tourniquet on for hours. It's fine. Tourniquets do not cause amputations. #StopTheBleed #FirstAid

Whether it is a CyberTruck exploding, or a full blown domestic terrorism attack, be ready to step in and save lives.

Tonight, a handful of folks, including me, took the #StopTheBleed training.

They have a website at https://www.stopthebleed.org/

They recommend offering the training for free, though my instructor said they accept donations.

When I looked for training near me, some folks were charging.

Up $50 (US).

I also learned that #TX law requires bleed boxen in all #schools. The boxen are required to have specific items, including hemostic dressings and tourniquets.

TIL that not every tourniquet results in an amputation, so don't be afraid to use one. Also, modern medical tourniquets are better than making do, so have them in your kit.

This is my six item trauma kit list for gunshot wounds.
RECOMMEND:
Tourniquet (Cat7, RATS), x2
Chest seals, 6"x6", with vent, x2
"Israeli-style" compression bandages, 6-inch, x2
Kaolin infused (Quik-Clot) packing gauze, at least 4 feet
EMT Shears, x1
Emergency Blanket (cold/shock), x1

You can't wait for help to arrive, YOU ARE THE HELP.

What's sad is that this is only going to save ONE person, IF they only have ONE torso wound and up to two limb wounds.
You will need to DOUBLE the tourniquets, compression bandages, and packing gauze, and TRIPLE the chest seals to save ONE person with multiple wounds.
If there is a mass shooting event, MULTIPLE people will need to be carrying these kits, and there are going to be well more than one victim
Get the training, save LIVES.

My husband has had two heart surgeries and is on a blood thinner. Even a little cut bleeds much more than you can imagine! So I’m headed out to learn how to “stop the bleed” this morning. Hoping I don’t faint. 😅

Knowledge is the easiest thing to carry.

We're also far more likely to encounter someone injured by a motor vehicle.

While a young adult driving down a highway, my father happened across a wreck. Other motorists had stopped too, but nobody knew what to do with the injured motorist, so they stood around and watched him bleed to death.

That story has haunted me, and prompted me to get trained to call 911 and render aid, hopefully enough so an ambulance team can arrive and take over. I want never to feel so helpless that I have to watch someone die.
