ual news: ual is getting cual
The good news is that apart from the embedded systems targeted through TinyGo, the ual programming language is getting a tiny C backend called
cualthat allows us to target small machines, notably the Z80, with support for some of its most popular platforms: the ZX Spectrum and CP/M to get started with. The bad news is that the weekend was too short and it's going to take me a while longer to release ual 0.7.6 the way I'd like.

Interesting ZX Spectrum Next KS3 news, especially for KS1 and KS2 users who will be able to upgrade their Nexts to support the new dual drive system affordably with a new daughterboard designed for that purpose!

Unfortunately due to manufacturing and logistics delays The ZX Spectrum Next KS3 delivery has been pushed to late February.
Personally, I prefer the Next team to deliver a solid release and get it right, instead of getting it rushed and green.

With Zen80 guaranteed to run on Linux, the next logical step was to try out ZenZX and play some ZX Spectrum stuff. After a little fiddling with GL and Alsa libraries, it compiled right away and ran. Quite smoothly to my surprise!
-
Buried in the last Spectrum Next KS3 update there's something that I think is not a minor announcement in passing, but possibly something big that could potentially bring hordes of new indie programmers, designers, artists to the Next platform. And hopefully many more people who stand to play some really good games as well.
A PICO-8 core is under development for the Spectrum Next, meaning the Next will be one of the first computers capable of running actual PICO-8 games on real hardware.

Debugging my macros. The good thing is that after you have some well designed macros, most of the simple text user interface things behave almost like BASIC, or terminal printing in Pascal.
Also a good chance to dog food myself using the barely improved editor, and trying to make the zenas assembler work and assemble my non-trivial Z80-based text editor. Dog food is good food!
The only problem I found today was a regression in the vim-like command to jump to a line number. One other thing I noticed is that horizontal scroll doesn't work reliably when you have very long lines that extend beyond the right margin. That being said, It's a little miracle I have never seen it crash, not a single time, during actual development work.
The best of news is that there are not many news on that front!#bim #tbim #zenas #z80 #zen80 #zenzx #retrocomputing #ZXSpectrum #speccy #Spectrum

Back on the spectrum. (Ha! Not that I have a choice). Got recap kits, powermod kits, and a diagnostic cartridge from #retroleum. One done, 4 to go. This one was a bit of a fight. Fighting my desoldering iron. Fighting myself making stupid mistakes. But I got there in the end.

I found another bug in ZenZX's 128k mode with snapshot saving. Wonderful Dizzy loads, runs, plays great. Then I save a snapshot. Snapshot is saved correctly. Reset. Then load that snapshot, the snapshot loads and resumes execution exactly where it left, no crashes, everything works except for keyboard input. Which seems to be something possibly related to interrupt handling, it's possible that I am somehow leaving interrupts disabled after resuming the snapshot. Time to debug some more.
-
So Wonderful Dizzy (a game for the ZX Spectrum 128k models) is running quite well in 128k mode on ZenZX. One caveat is that thae fast tape loading feature didn't work this time, more debugging is needed. I'm also going to have to compare the quality of music playback taking other emulators as parameters of reference. All in all, a more successful test than I anticipated.

Earlier I posted a little tale about the 18 months of existence of Imagine Software, and Bandersnatch, one of the impossible pieces of expensive vapourware that never came to fruition (which has since become the inspiration for one of the TV series under the Black Mirror brand).
I knew that some of the ZX Spectrum code had ended up as part of the game Gift of the Gods, which was ultimately published by a different company who hired a surviving former Imagine Software team.
But I didn't know this other part of the story on how another part of the original Banderstnatch code ended up becoming part of the Amiga, Atari ST, and 68k Macintosh game Brataccas.
It makes sense now, because the Sinclair QL featured an earlier version of the Motorola 68000, so the port from the QL to the Amiga must have been relatively straightforward.
Says Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BrataccasIn October 1984, Sinclair Research paid a rumoured £100,000 for the rights to Bandersnatch and contracted Fire Iron, a new company set up by Hetherington and Lawson, to produce the game for the Sinclair QL[6] for release in early 1985.[10][11][12] Sinclair withdrew funding in 1985 when the QL version never appeared, and the directors then formed Psygnosis, with their first title Brataccas introduced at the 1985 Personal Computer World show.[13][14] It featured many of the concepts originally intended for Bandersnatch, and was released on the Atari ST, Amiga, and Macintosh[15] in January 1986.[2]
Look at those graphics! They are untranslated tetra-colour QL graphics on the Amiga, Atari ST, and the 68k Macintosh!
Download Amiga version here:

Maybe the visuals won't improve .tap support by much. But... why not?

Regarding ZX Spectrum Next (KS3) dual SD card support:
- There are no exact specs confirmed by any official source describing how dual SD support will work.
That being said, a rough consensus of sorts seems to have formed among enthusiasts about the most plausible model that's to be expected:
Internal SD likely holds system / OS / firmware stuff
External SD likely handles games, data, user storage
Internal SD is probably not removable via standard user access
Backing up internal without opening is uncertain / possibly non-trivial
Other conjectures about system updates over WiFI and other work modes have been theorised, but seem to be considered less plausible by most.
