Auf Wiedersehen, Monty!
Auf Wiedersehen, Arbeitswoche – willkommen, Wochenende! -
I tried Swordwork, by Inufuto (on my emulator) and I'm favourably surprised! The most notable, and frankly absurd metric of this game is that it runs on 119 different platforms (primarily 8-bit platforms but also some 16-bit ones like various IBM PC configurations). 119!! And according to the developer's log it was developed between April and July this year.
But judging this game by that metric alone would be doing a disservice to retro fanatics, it's a simple but quite entertaining old school game, the graphics are competent, and it even has music in 128k mode! It's not the smoothest sprite movement I've seen, but still more than acceptable in almost every category and it fits in only 11 Kb, which is an impressive technical feat, especially for a game ported across so many platforms!
Its simplicity is a feature, not something against it, and It's better than average in technical achievement and in game design. That has to count for something.

NEW: ZSP is now the umbrella website for all my ZX Spectrum stuff
Wrapping up a full week of refactoring, patching, and releasing several projects that had sat stalled in various states of completion for the last two years. Their documentation, notes, and artefacts now live in one central place.
A few older projects — zxa, zxgotools, and zxdisk — are now deprecated, superseded by this new set, which I intend to keep maintaining for the foreseeable future.
A blog is next, along with a few other things on the backburner, but they didn't fit into one work week. These projects had already waited long enough — the genuinely new stuff will just have to wait a little more.
Here's to the next two years of ZX Spectrum development!

zenimate 0.7.0 is out:
a tool palette replaces the single paintbrush — selection with Photoshop-compatible shortcuts: move/duplicate, five shape tools, flood fill, and a proper multi-line text tool with six built-in BDF fonts.
Also new: frame drag-to-reorder, a right-click frame menu, and a global attribute-paint toggle.
Binary builds for major platforms available.
Look! No Electron!
Grab it whilst still hot!https://github.com/ha1tch/zenimate/releases#release-v0.7.0

Introducing zenas: a Z80/Z80N macro assembler written in Go, now public at v0.7.5.
The difference: it runs and tests the code it assembles. One static binary — assemble, package to ZX Spectrum tape or snapshot, execute in a built-in emulator, assert on machine state, go-test style.
Encodings verified byte-for-byte against pasmo and sjasmplus across all 545 forms. Typed macro linkage, packages, build tags — with the design reasoning written down.

Nothing too fancy, but zenimate is gaining a few new tools without which it wouldn't be very usable.
Version 1.0 for ZX Spectrum classic is around the corner. The next big effort will be to make it usable for ZX Spectrum Next art, by version 2.0. But that's going to take a while.

Pleased to report that the number of seeders distributing the 4Gb ZXArt corpus of ZX Spectrum art and software has doubled in the last 24 hours.
After the sad demise of World of Spectrum, there's never been a better time to help leeching and seeding zxart as a preservation safe. Spectrum Computing and the Internet Archive are amazing resources, but it's public knowledge how archives are enduring persistent attacks. Nothing can beat redundancy of a full organised archive distributed globally.
And we can make it even safer, by seeding it back many times over! Thanks for your contribution to the preservation of ZX Spectrum cultural wealth.

zenimate supports sprites of up to 32x24 cells (256x192) which is the size of a standard Spectrum screen, and it can import png, jpeg, and gif images (best fit, centre, and stretch modes). Conceivably, you could draw interesting animations to use in your own Spectrum software. Which is a good reason to work on screen compression with fast decompression and exports that you can drop in your game code. Status: being designed for an upcoming release.

A few mandatory features have been added to zenimate 0.6.1 if you would like to get the update.
-- Drag frames to reorder them, right click on frame to insert, duplicate, delete, etc.
-- UI elements such as file chooser, option dialogues, and popup menus are being generalised as a Go package under pkg/zenui. Ready to profit by other apps who might like to save themselves headaches and time reusing the Speccy-adjacent look and feel instead of Raylib's more spartan default feature set.https://github.com/ha1tch/zenimate/releases/tag/v0.6.1

If you can afford it, after the untimely demise of the World of Spectrum database, it would be a good time to help leeching and seeding zxart as a preservation safe. Spectrum Computing and the Internet Archive are amazing resources, but it's public knowledge how archives are enduring persistent attacks. Nothing can beat redundancy of a full organised archive distributed globally.

In case you haven't tried it yet, or you haven't discovered all of zenimate's features yet (as of v0.6.0), this is a little video demoing a very basic animation.
Feedback is appreciated.
Binaries available for: Linux amd64, Linux arm64, Windows amd64, macOS arm64, macOS amd64.

This new game "Yazzie" seems to use the Retrosouls engine which only runs on the ZX Spectrum 128k (and perfectly accurate emulators).
Just a heads up in case you are using a 48k model and you only see rubbish on screen.#ZXSpectrum #Spectrum #Speccy #retrogaming #retrocomputing

Depends a bit what one considers 'contemporary' or 'back in the day'. The ZX Spectrum +3 VM was released in 1999 by John Elliot, which is closer in time to the original VMs than it is to our present day, 27 years later.
This is the page of the ZX Spectrum +3 VM by its author, which I shared earlier:
