The UK's #SocialDemocracy era lasted for 31 years, 2 months, & 23 days.
It began on 5 July 1945, when #ClementAttlee's #LabourParty won the election. It ended on 28 September 1976, when Chancellor #DenisHealey called in the #IMF.
That end of British Social Democracy was 50 years ago last Monday. There was no memorial service, not even among the victorious #neoliberals. Nobody on any side really wants to acknowledge that the movement which built the #NHS has been gone so long.

As a tourist on a brief visit to Stockholm, my thoughts will necessarily be impressionistic, based on glimpses and partial knowledge. I don't speak Swedish, I don't know what it is like to live and work there, I am clueless about how one finds somewhere to live in Sweden, how expensive food shopping seems, what schools are really like, how one makes friends, plans one's life, and all the rest.
Nevertheless, I was struck by how prosperous, well organized, and tidy Stockholm was. Even Rinkeby seemed to be nothing like the violent hellhole of rightwing lore.
How much of this healthy prosperity is a consequence of the long period of social democratic hegemony? I'm sure conservatives and European liberals ( free marketeers) will claim that prosperity was achieved in spite of , not because of, that social democratic hegemony. Even if that were the case, which I doubt, it would still be false to claim, as so many on the right do, that social democratic policies of wealth redistribution through taxation and comprehensive social provision must lead to stasis and disintegration.
The big question for me is what happened to Swedish social democracy in the 1970s? Of course, part of the answer to that question will depend on how we explain and assess the problems of the Keynesian Fordist economies across the liberal democratic capitalist world in that decade and the advent of neoliberalism. However, another part of that answer will depend on the specifics of Swedish history, such as the promotion and eventual failure of the Meidner plan.
A final note: I had been warned that the Swedes were not a particularly friendly or chatty people. My experience was very much to the contrary. Most of the people I met, after smiling at my attempts to say something in Swedish, were only too happy to help and talk. Of course, many of these people were employed in positions where they are expected to talk to visitors, customers, and so on, but even so many of these people seemed happy to go beyond the requirements of their job. I also had nice conversations with a couple of people I met waiting for things to open. In short, I found the Swedes friendly .
I would definitely go back to Stockholm, as there is so much to do and see there. I would also like to explore other parts of Sweden. But the there are all sorts of other places I want to visit as well, and I only have so much time and money .
Anyway, I loved my visit to Stockholm!

I've recently come back from a short holiday in Stockholm. I'm not going to post about everything I did and saw there, but will note some highlights and things I noticed on my first visit to Sweden.
Ever since the 1936 publication of Marquis Child's "The Middle Way", Sweden has enjoyed a special place in the hearts and minds of anglophone social democrats.
I'm aware that Childs might have given an idealized portrait of Sweden, and I am also aware that Sweden is not now and never has been an egalitarian collectivist paradise. Most painfully of all, I am aware that, recent election results notwithstanding, the far right has made significant gains in Swedish society and that neoliberal thinking has permeated areas such as the provision and management of schools.
Nevertheless, I was still curious to see Sweden for myself, even though I was non holiday rather than on an investigative mission or study trip.

There is #StructuralUnemployment which can be addressed with re-skilling for available/new jobs and then there’s the #NeoLiberal #NAIRU principle based on a deduction that real full employment will lead to runaway inflation which is an #RBA responsibility to maintain within an *arbitrary* range. The latter leads to *systemic* unemployment which requires #PublicSupport.While I understand structural unemployment occurs and will continue to occur, there is no economic imperative for policy-driven unemployment. It is strictly a policy specifically designed to enable wealth transfer from the #Workers to the #RentierClass through #WageControl.
In our current economic system, #Wages are treated as a #Costs of doing business resulting in #LowerProfits. Maintaining #unemployment in the 4-5% range ensures competition for jobs and supresses demand for higher wages hence maintaining a higher level of profit. That’s how it works.
How stupid is that? Creating unemployment to please #FinancialMarkets and #privateEnterprises while simultaneously using #PublicFunds to help those out of a job. What kind of screwed logic is that system based on? I’ll tell you — it’s not Capitalism — it’s plain and simple #ClassWar led by #Grifters (which can occur in any economic system if it is deregulated enough or centrally controlled by the #Oligarchy — we have both).
BTW, instituting a Universal Basic Income (#UBI) would look after the unemployed much better than we do now, but it would not solve the repercutions of our failed NeoLiberal economic system. Wealth transfer to the 1% would still occur. Our economy is **rigged** and we need to changes that with stronger regulations, check and balances.

Problem -I can’t seem to lock the bootloader on either Lenovo M9 or Nokia 4.2. Previously, wanted to flash one or both of them with custom rom, but put it aside. Debian Xcfe doesn’t recognize either of them when I use command ‘adb devices’ so that issuing command ‘fastboot flashing unlock’ doesn’t work.

It is worth the read of course, but one ought to remain critical while doing so.
All of the information that went into this article was obtained from publicly available sources. That doesn’t diminish the value of that information or the article itself, but it does leave many questions unanswered and many facts undiscovered. The one thing that the article is sorely lacking is an analysis to balance what we know with its importance within the strategic context. As a result the article misses what should have be its intended goal of calling the value of the alliance into question which is, unfortunately, largely compensated for by the emotional responses unleached in the reader (which may have been the writer’s real objective).
Yes… OMG… the Merikans are overwhelming us and colonizing Australia! That kind of response does not serve us well at all. If anything, it goes to enflame a situation about which we know next to fuck all [pardon my French]. Given the likely classification of everything that would shed a light on what is occurring and connect govt decisions to recommendations drawn from an exhaustive strategic analysis of Australian defence needs, **we will never know the whole truth**.
If we cannot trust our elected representatives to do the right thing and make the tough decisions when it comes to our safety from foreign aggression and our defence needs, then we only have ourselves to blame for voting the bastards in. But first we must establish that ‘they’ cannot be trusted. We haven’t done this. Not once on the matter of our military alliances. Ever. Which implies that, to my knowledge, there’s never been a situation in Australian Commonwealth history where evidence has surfaced that would have led us to question the trust we place in our leaders on defence matters (As Britain found out in 1942).
And so, we come back full circle. There is no excuse for leaving *politics* aside until the next election saussage. However fortunate we are that voting is compulsory, we should not slack off during the interim periods. It is incumbent upon all of us to do the homework. Get informed from sources deemed reliable, apply critical thinking, update your opinions accordingly and find the best candidates for the job you wish them to do for you, whatever the circumstances - 365 days a year.
*Don’t complain, be constructive in whichever way you can, for the good of the country and your own wellbeing*. That’s been my motto.
In the meantime, ask yourself a simple question: ‘Why is China aggressively expanding its sphere of influence and arming itself at a breakneck speed?’ [as well as causing an arms race in SEAsia] If you get an defensible answer, ask yourself how Australia should position itself in response. What would you do as PM?

Else, he neatly summarizes a major source cause of our collective populist anger. Might this be the ralying cry that the #Greens sorely need? The means to bring about the downfall of our *tired* two party dominated political system?
