  1. Just for the record; I looked it up:

SNOBOL by Farber, Griswold and Polonsky was developed at Bell Labs (!), 1962–1967.
Its patterns are essentially as powerful as context-free grammars, but syntactically they are rather different from regexes.
    Etc.

I didn't find out if there are any records of SNOBOL influencing Unix regex processing.
Obviously, that is likely, and it is also likely it has been written up.

  9. @ovid

I worked with and could do maintenance on the code, but couldn’t really create from scratch.

I started in the 70’s, IBM 1620 assembler.

  12. @spot And you know what's the most crazy part of it? It is not some kind of deluvial legacy script. Somebody started a development of new program in #SNOBOL on 25th July 2022!!!

  13. Thanks for this link. Very good article. I've used quite of few of these languages and they've definitely had an influence on my programming regardless of which language I've used for any given project. The first programs I wrote were in #APL and #FORTRAN followed by #LISP and #SNOBOL (via Spitbol).

Oh, man, I wasn't expecting to come up today. My parents programmed it back in the 70s before they left the programming field and got what they thought of as "real" jobs!

  15. Does anyone has experience with the #Unicon¹ programming language? It is a successor of the #Icon² programming language and #Snobol. I really like it's concepts and Icon seemed to be popular in the early ninetees, but I'm wondering if and how it is used nowadays...
