I'm really slow off the mark sometimes.
Soon after I got my first Android device in 2022 and installed F-Droid, I started finding apps from;
https://simplemobiletools.com/
They were so easy and pleasant to use that I promoted them here, encouraging anyone using using them to donate to the developer, Tibor Kaputa. I even considered buying the Simple Phone he was selling;

@mxfraud i like the Neo Launcher and the Shade Launcher, but if you're looking for something simpler, the #Fossify launcher would definitely be good too (fork of #SimpleMobileTools): f-droid.org/en/packages/org.fo… -
CW: Alternatives (Fedi, GAFAM, Free Software, etc.), gloomy
Well, I used to really want to preach alternatives. In fact, I still do — but I find it harder and harder to convince myself that there's any point.
Firstly, people don't want changes. And I perfectly understand that, because I'm so tired myself. And if it weren't for a kind of stubbornness, combined with a sense of responsibility and lack of a better way to live, I would love to kill it all with fire and move to Gobi.
People are used to living in a cesspit and they're good. They don't want to go out into the clean air — at the best, if their cesspit starts stinking too much, they want to move into a neighboring swamp, the one with perfume in it. Perhaps they'll move from #Twitter to #BlueSky, from #Windows to #macOS, from #Android to #iPhone. Some will try the #Fediverse, or #Linux, and they'll stay. Others will decide they're not for them, and perhaps become even more convinced that alternatives suck and mainstream's the only way.
Secondly, the world can hardly be described otherwise than a cesspit-in-a-cesspit. You can try convincing people to use more secure services, apps, and so on — but they'll still be using browsers and operating systems that invent even more imaginative ways of spying on them. The goalpost is moving away fast.
Thirdly, over and over it turns out you can't really trust the alternatives. You convince someone to switch from X to Y and a month later it turns out Y became evil as well. Out of the frying pan and into the fire. How many times can they be expected to switch? How many times can we suggest another alternative? Can you trust anyone anymore?
#PixelFed turned out to be run by an asshole, who on top of that keeps bragging about buyout offers. #SimpleMobileTools were sold. Successive websites and applications are either becoming enshittified or abandoned. I'm literally scared that if I can convince someone to use Linux, then the distribution in question will one day start spying on people…
#GAFAM and nazis are on full offensive. They make you dependent, they buy, they corrupt, they destroy. They suck the energy and life out of creative people — and that is killing the alternatives.

CW: Alternatywy (Fedi, GAFAM, Wolne Oprogramowanie, itp.), ponuro

https://github.com/FossifyOrg/Calendar/pull/200
So schreckt man potenzielle Helfer ab 😭

Remember the "Simple Mobile Tools" suite of Android apps? It used to be a great collection of basic apps that didn't slurp up your data, clog up your apps with advertising, or charge exorbitant prices. It isn't anymore.
At the end of 2023, the suite was sold to ZipoApps, who proceeded to do all of those things. (This appears to be their business model: buy an app with a large install base and squeeze every last bit of monetization out of it while destroying its usefulness, fun, and credibility.)
Seriously: They replaced the $2.99 one-time payment for the Pro version of Calendar with a $15/week subscription.
Fortunately the apps were all GPL, and there's a complete fork called Fossify. They're still slowly rolling apps out to F-Droid and Google Play, with about 10 out so far.
I use the calendar and contacts apps all the time, and the voice recorder is good for taking quick notes.
Fossify Apps: Replacing Simple Mobile Tools
Update: The file manager and gallery have also been solid (local-only of course), and the phone app handles calls just fine (unless you need more accessibility or transcriptions). The music player does well with local audio.
I ended up dropping the messages app, which is OK for SMS/MMS, but doesn't handle RCS at all. The keyboard really doesn't fit my typing style, and I switched to Heliboard.

#SimpleMobileTools has really gone.
The new owner changed the free version apps' icon, make all of them closed source, have ads, and track you, while abandoned the paid version.
I still remember on their blog that why their apps is superior and will never collect your data, will always be FOSS. Now they removed their blog website so it's not like they forgot. -

Fossify is a continuation of the "simple Mobile Tools" suite which recently was sold to ZipApps who then promptly ruined them all.
One of the devs who originally worked on Simple Mobile Tools has forked the code, and released it under the name Fossify.
The tools are available on F-Droid, Google Play or directly from their GitHub repo

Fossify apps pick up where Simple Mobile Tools left off (free and open source suite of Android apps)
When the lead developer behind Simple Mobile Tools sold the business to ZipApps last year, many long-time users of this suite of simple, free, and open source Android apps were wary. And, as expected, ZipApps soon started inserting ads and locking features that had once been free behind expensive subscriptions.
But a developer who had worked on Simple Mobile […]https://liliputing.com/?p=167280

Anyone that uses #WiFiCalling (does it matter if I specify on #ATT or a comparable network?) on #Android : If you get #spam calls from random numbers, does the #Fossify / #SimpleMobileTools dialer app work ok with the feature to only allow calls from your contacts through (as the SimpleMobileTools dialer app's description on #FDroid mentions) if using Wi-Fi Calling? I mentioned both SMT and Fossify as not everyone might be aware of both, and the feature is only mentioned on SMT dialer's page.

Remember Simple Calendar, Simple Gallery and 22 other bare bones #FOSS Android apps from #Simplemobiletools? Well, they got bought by a company that tries to extract value of the large user base those apps have.
https://github.com/SimpleMobileTools/General-Discussion/issues/241
Look at the Play Store reviews. The apps now seem to feature a lot of ads and sketchy in-app purchases. 15 $ per week for Simple Flashlight for example. https://play.google.com/store/apps/dev?id=8214346176194980263 -
📲 Welche mittelkomplexen FOSS-Dateimanager könnt Ihr für #Android empfehlen? 📁 (also was zwischen #Fossify (ehemals #SimpleMobileTools ) und #GhostCommander )

Good grief! I noticed that the Fossify Calendar and File Manager had made it to Google Play, and also noticed that the reviews for the old Simple Calendar were tanking...
The top one was this:
It originally said there would be a one-time payment of 2.99 after the free trial. I thought I'd gladly pay that so I continued to use it. When the trial was up I was given the option to buy not for the single payment of 2.99 but for $15/week! The app itself is exactly what I want over other calendars I've tried. And I would pay for adless, but over $2/day is insane. Banner ads would be tolerable but it has video ads when opening the app and adding an event. Wish I'd read the reviews.
(Emphasis added.) Before the sale, Simple Mobile Calendar did in fact have a single one-time payment option of around $2.99.
The company replied:
Sorry to hear that the price for the Premium subscription seems high to you. Please, note that the App on the Premium version opens up many exciting features and opportunities for you and it is definitely worth the price. The Premium version has no ads. Thank you!
"Seems" high"? $15/week for a simple calendar is exorbitant.
Video adds on a basic tool are insane.
I am so glad I uninstalled all of the ones I was using, and started replacing them with the Fossify fork!
Meanwhile, the Fossify apps are continuing to roll out on F-Droid, with the Contacts, Phone (dialer) and SMS Messenger now available as well.

-
Fossify has forked the entire suite of Simple Mobile Tools after the original was acquired by ZipoApps, known for acquiring existing apps and bloating them with ads, subscriptions, etc. (Their TrustPilot reviews are an interesting mix of 5-stars from devs who sold them their apps, and 1-stars from customers complaining about unauthorized charges.)
The forked apps are starting to make their way into F-Droid - so far the calendar, file manager and gallery.
-
