  1. #WordWeavers July 26 Do you have any fight scenes in your work? What are they like?

Oh yes, and they range from realistic (a tussle with would-be robbers in Shadowed Memories Part 1) to crazy (like...in SM part 2 which I'm putting out in the coming months, where a more supernatural character faces off against a SWAT team being manipulated from the shadows). I really tried to capture the tension in the hoodlum scene, while also breaking down the quick movements of the combatants. In Part 2, there is some "bullet-time" action meant to show how fast and other-worldly a character can be, as he takes out his gun wielding does with his bare hands and objects in the book-store that he tosses with such force it knocks people out despite their protective gear.

  2. "Whatever happens next, it’s your funeral,’ the daemon said.

‘My funeral? As if the universe would just let me die. It’s having too much fun fucking with me.’ Kurai walked into the building and closed the door behind him.

-From Shadowed Memories part 2. While I'm editing, I have to say I'm enjoying the big horror parts and Kurai parts the most. I'm wanting to work on a set of short stories after all this editing is done, but I can't wait to get back to Kurai's world, even if I am starting at book one which takes place way before Kurai jumps into this world while chasing down Argyle, The Bandaged Man.

  3. It's great rereading Part 2 of #ShadowedMemories while I go through the editing process, and just coming across these scenes of horror sprinkled throughout.
"Oh, I forgot about this creepy scene."
"This is gonna give someone nightmares."
"Good work on this, past me!"
I'm around halfway through, and have mostly trimmed up some paragraphs, switched out words here and there, smoothing out the flow of the tale. I'm in an area now where I remember pondering over the pacing while writing it, as well as chapter/scene length and structure. Looks like the pacing did work out well, but I've ended up combining a few chapters that just fit better together.
That's my writing update for today. I'll be doing more editing on breaks at work tonight, while I also keep my upcoming book work in mind.

  4. #WritersCoffeeClub 29: How do you handle foreshadowing? How do you navigate building up to the ‘big reveal’?

I feel like my answers to writing questions are so... underwhelming. I usually have at least a sense of a few things that will happen in the story, and I just write, pushing forward towards them. Sometimes there will be something I'll write down to keep in mind for use later...
In other words, I don't think about it too much, but it works out in the end.

I'm currently editing #ShadowedMemories part 2 and haven't found anything that needed chiseling to add/increase a sense of foreshadowing so far. I guess people will just have to read it and see how they feel.

  5. Just finished writing the first draft of #ShadowedMemories Part 2!!! 🥳 As of now it's at 72,252 words, that brings all of Shadowed Memories to 133,017 words. Now it's time to take a little breather before reading it all...then comes the editing 🤢🤮🤣.

  6. It burns between my fingers. The cold, dry air, and the stress of trying to stay financially afloat have really been getting to my psoriasis. On the plus side...I've been staying pretty consistent with my writing. I'm over 68k words in #ShadowedMemories part 2 so far. Getting to a rough spot with an action scene that's getting ready to take place. They always slow me down so much, because I worry about not capturing them well enough, clear enough.

  7. #WritersCoffeeClub 2/6 Have you tried creating your own book cover designs? Share your work/attempts.

I'm an #IndieWriter & #Artist and...broke... For one of my books (the #poetry one, From The Depths) I used an older piece of mine that I thought fit. For my first novel, Bloodloss, my friend let me use a great photo she took, and I put a simple filter over that. I drew the cover (and a few little illustrations) for my novella Making Contact. The cover for #ShadowedMemories Part 1 was illustrated by my wonderful wife, and she's going to create the cover for part 2 while I'm planning on creating my own cover for the book encompassing both parts.

  8. I need to start thinking about the cover for my #ShadowedMemories version with both parts one and two. 😬 It just hit me that I haven't thought about it much at all, meanwhile I'm almost done with the first draft. 😂

  9. "It ends at The Void."

#ShadowedMemories part 2's first draft is almost finished up. Going into this climatic scene and not 100% sure how I'll end it yet, but I have a good idea of how I'm going to close the story up afterwards.

  10. #WordWeavers February 2: Do any of your characters have creative jobs?

In my current wip #ShadowedMemories yes, although there's more info on that in what I've published already (part 1). Klive is a big author stuck in a rut after a divorce, and has caved to his agent and moved to the big city, where he hopes inspiration will strike. He ends up falling down a reality questioning rabbit-hole, where the only thing he can think about is how to get away from the shadow creatures, or wake up from his nightmare.

The main character in my short story that was published in Bad Spirits by Clay Vermulm goes through a similar situation, where he and his wife head out to their regular vacation spot, and he hopes it'll help him get back on track with his writing, but he ends up encountering cosmic horrors.

  11. #writerscoffeeclub 1/31: How’s your writing progress this year? What are you working on?

It's been pretty good so far. I'm on the final chapters of #ShadowedMemories part 2, have gotten a decent amount of writing in every work day on my breaks, and hoping the handful of people waiting on its release enjoy it when I get to editing and publishing later this year.

So other #writers on here post about their progress with any frequency?

  12. #WordWeavers 01/28: Did any specific world history inspire parts of your story?

Eh...my current wip #ShadowedMemories follows a writer struggling against supernatural forces in the present day. There isn't much of a historical inspiration there. My bigger world, #DarkShadow isn't much for historical inspiration either, it's biggest source of inspiration comes from the #VampireHunterD series. There is room for stories that take from life, like an idea I have for a city run by a totally incompetent wannabe king, and I could see myself expanding on a Plague short I've written with influence from the COVID pandemic.

  13. 505 words tonight, but they were good words, I swear. I just hope that I was able to illustrate well enough the terror and struggle that took place. I'm certainly feeling it myself, like I was there, experiencing it, but we'll have to see what my alpha reader thinks and go from there. Take care for now #Writers and #Authors of #Bookstodon and the greater #Fediverse .

  14. #WritersCoffeeClub 01/24—How long is the longest story you’ve ever written? Can you link to it?

My longest published work is my first novel, #Bloodloss which is a bit under 88k words (the paperback edition is 310 pages). When I finish Part 2 of #ShadowedMemories and combine both parts into one book (part 1 is available on Kindle) it'll be my longest so far. Part 1 is a little over 60k words, while part 2 is at 62k and counting.

    Happy writings, #Bookstodon and fellow #Authors & #writers !

  15. #wordweavers Jan 25th When shopping, what do your MCs look for? (Prices, brands, ethical sourcing, quality?)

Klive in #ShadowedMemories looks for quality at a decent price. He's done pretty well with his best selling horror novels, but he's been stuck in a rut and has always been worried about his financial stability collapsing beneath him. He likes to support fellow creatives, especially those without a platform yet, which he feels close to despite having "made it."

  16. #WritersCoffeeClub 25 Jan - Do you have a worked-out magical system (or advanced technology in sci-fi)? Or do you make it up as you go?

In my current wip #ShadowedMemories pt2 there are a bunch of different magical things at play, and they all have their own rules in a way. There's the "Sleep Doc" who's able to put people to sleep and dive into their memories and dreams, which he uses to help his patients settle their thoughts and sleep better. There's a character who is slowly uncovering some abilities, like spirit walking and a special sight allowing him to see the manifestation of other peoples' abilities. He's also able to speak his thoughts right into the heads of those around him, which causes some issues when it first happens by accident. Then there are these cosmic horrors that can leave people paralyzed by their mere presence...
