#BirdFriendlyCoffee: What's in your cup can help, or hurt birds and #conservation efforts.
Coffee -native to Africa- is heavily grown in Central America. For most of its history it was grown in the forest under story, and was minimally disruptive to native ecology.
In order to maximize profits, many producers now clear-cut the forest and plant coffee as a mono-culture, imperiling birds.
You can be part of the solution buy buying Smithsonian-certified shade-grown coffee. There are many producers out there, and IMHO it tastes better. Lately we prefer Birds and Beans. (Not an ad)

I have a Smithsonian-certified #BirdFriendlyCoffee update. Since @rpmik bought ALL of Birds and Bean's supply (I joke) I decided to check out Chesapeake Coffee Roasters.
They were way more expensive, but figured why not try 'em. Friends, it was terrible. Maybe a bad batch? Anyway, won't be ordering from Chesapeake again.
Birds and Beans is where it's at.
What's bird friendly-coffee? Glad ya asked... https://nationalzoo.si.edu/migratory-birds/bird-friendly

Been a while since I've talked about Smithsonian-certified #BirdFriendlyCoffee.
Here's the deal. Coffee is great. It prefers to grow in the shade. But as with all industrial ag, "they" have figured out they can grow more, faster, in the sun. So bye bye forests and crucial habitat for migratory birds.
Smithsonian certified coffee means #ShadeGrownCoffee, meaning the short trees grow below the canopy of native trees. Also #freetrade and #organic built into the certification.
Find a roaster: https://nationalzoo.si.edu/migratory-birds/find-bird-friendly-coffee-retailer-near-you My normal go-to #BirdsandBeans is out and we can't wait, so off to a new roaster for this batch. #coffee

NGL, it was pretty awesome to toot that last one while sitting on the couch with @Jillianmarisa, my DS9 cup full of #BirdFriendlyCoffee watching our bird buffet out the window and playing #wingspan. #BirdNerd maximum achievement unlocked!

We've been through three #BirdFriendlyCoffee brands so far. I enjoyed Guatemalan light roast from Conservation #Coffee as well as the American Redstart light roast from Birds & Beans. As mentioned earlier, not fond of the Fortuna bag we're on now. Maybe just a bad batch?
Birds & Beans seems to be a big player in the #shadegrowncoffee space. American Bird Conservancy members get 15% off. So I think I've found my brand
I wish you luck in your own experimenting. Smithsonian's finder: https://nationalzoo.si.edu/migratory-birds/where-buy-bird-friendly-coffee

☕ @Jillianmarisa and I have been jumping around the #BirdFriendly / #ShadeGrownCoffee scene for a few months now. I have thoughts!
1. Bird friendly is great. Regular coffee is terrible for migratory birds, shade grown is less bad (still not great)
2. Smithsonian certified means it's also organic AND free trade
3. The brands are all over the place. We're a light roast whole bean family. Currently on a bag of Fortuna Bird Friendly El Salvador Finca Hungria.
It's my least favorite so far (1/2) #coffee

After attending a talk by the fine folks at Missouri River Bird Observatory we decided to get into #BirdFriendlyCoffee.
Overall, it's been great exploring the different options. And as #MasterNaturalists we appreciate the benefit of supporting ecology vs clearcutting and monocropping.
As a bonus, all Smithsonian-certified #birdfriendly coffee is #organic and #freetrade.

Have you heard about #ShadeGrownCoffee?
Here's the deal: As much as we love it, most coffee is bad for the planet on many facets.
But hope isn't lost. #ShadeGrownCoffee is the answer.
If you're into #Coffee, #Birding #Permaculture and #Conservation, go get yourself some.
The Smithsonian has a finder for brick and mortar as well as online. We're a whole bean, single source, light roast family and still have #BirdFriendly options.
