In all my repairs so far, this is probably the most obvious cap failure I’ve seen… and probably why 12v is pulsing between 2v and 3v and I have no display. #se30 #retrocomputing

Anyone with an SE/30 know if it’s normal for UG6, UG7, UI6, and UH7 to be warm during use?
They’re not overly hot, but it’s enough that I’m second guessing myself that something might be shorted.

Bleh. Working on the SE/30, and I’ve confirmed continuity between the CPU and the ROM, so that’s not a problem.
Next I should do the CPU and the Glue Logic chip, but the CPU isn’t socketed, so the pins are only accessible on the bottom, and the Glue chip is surface-mount so the pins are only accessible on the top.
Annoying as heck.

Still getting a slow Sad Mac chime and the simasimac pattern on the SE/30 even with known good RAM and a little deoxit in the ROM slots. So I guess it’s time to buy an oscilloscope.
Gonna have to try Adrian Black’s serial diagnostics probably too.
On one hand, I wish this were a simpler fix. On the other hand… more problems to solve, more time with my project computer!

So the last part of Adrian's SE/30 adventure is live
I recommend this if you want see a #retrocomputing #mystery resolved…

Unfortunately, even after a re-cap, I still get the simasimac pattern on power on. But the sound works now, enough for me to hear a sad Mac chime. Tomorrow is troubleshooting time!

Leaky caps removed board cleaned. Y’all I’m stoked how little damage there was from the electrolyte!

The SE/30 is new to my collection. Logic board is in REMARKABLE shape. No battery damage, and only a couple of leaky caps. It powered on to the simasimac pattern, but I’ve got replacement caps on the way for the logic and analog boards, and hopefully that’s enough to get it to boot!

Schade. Nur Streifen.
Kennt hier jemand jemanden, der so was wieder hinkriegen kann oder zumindest weiß, woran es liegen könnte? Vorzugsweise im Raum Hamburg. -

While waiting for parts for the #SE30 , I couldn't resist playing around with @maczydeco 's Mini vMac for iOS.
With some changes to the code, each virtual Mac Plus pixel is super crisp, which makes it almost feel like the real thing (I know, I know, blasphemy!)

Seems like I'm now at number 12 on that page, but adjusting the cutoff brightness doesn't help, so I guess I'm gonna have check some more resistors on the analog board 😓
Not knowing much about electronics + reading all the warnings about the high voltage stuff is kind of nerve-racking, so I'll take it slowly.

It's #marchintosh2024 , so time to pick up where I left with the #SE30 last year.
Following instructions from https://bylenga.ddns.net/SE30%20repair.html#BlackOut , I replaced some diodes and a resistor on the analog board, and I got a bit further: no more black screen, but some glorious strange patterns. At least the CRT seems to work!
