#KnowledgeByte: The #Hollow #Earth is a concept proposing that the planet Earth is entirely hollow or contains a substantial interior space.
The notion was disproven by Nevil Maskelyne and Charles Hutton in their #Schiehallion #Experiment around 1774.

Picked an easy day for the first new hill of 2025: Meall Tairneachan - the Corbett just across the road from Schiehallion in the Southern Highlands.
The snow is all a memory - we're back to summer conditions. There was a cold wind at the summit, but we were sheltered on the way up and down by the forest and by the bulk of the hill itself.

Top of the Triangle
Clouds swirling around the top of Schiehallion, taken from across Loch Rannoch.
In 1774 it was used in the famous Maskelyne/Mason experiment, to measure Newton's gravitational constant, G. Coincidentally Hutton invented contour lines to help model the mountain's shape.

@fooflington oh, yes, I remember this website from some 10 years ago, last time I hiked #Scotland! Thanks, that brings fond memories of #Schiehallion among others!
but not sure it's usable for #cycling: e.g., for https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/moray/moray-coast-trail.shtml how do I know whether cycling is permitted/tolerated and whether there are kissing gates or stiles? I guess I could scan the OS map for the latter... tough. And if I book places at the 2 ends of a 50km trail, I want to be reasonably sure....
