  1. Today, I finally remembered to attach my Garmin to our dog on our hike. You can really see the bits where she runs back and forth and where she was on the lead. In the end she ended up doing at least 50% more distance than the two of us. #hikingwithdogs #dogsofmastodon

  2. Finally managed to get out and hike for the first time this winter. Needless to say, the pups were thrilled to be back out on the trails!

  3. McCloud Falls hike today. It’s a three fall #hike, but you can get an extra #fall if you’re clumsy enough. #dogsofmastodon #hikingwithdogs #NorCal

  4. 8 miles, 4 squirrels, 103 interesting sniffs. My four-legged hiker crushed it today—and definitely deserves an extra treat. 🐕🥾

  6. Brown Cow Hill from Corgarff Castle in Aberdeenshire with Moray yesterday. Sounds an unimaginative name, until you remember that many of the Gaelic hill names – Black Hill, White Hill, Grey Hill, Red Hill, Big Hill, Small Hill – aren’t exactly inspiring.
We did have some wildlife encounters – a mountain hare very visible still in its winter coat, and a few red grouse – which were great to see.

  7. Picked an easy day for the first new hill of 2025: Meall Tairneachan - the Corbett just across the road from Schiehallion in the Southern Highlands.
The snow is all a memory - we're back to summer conditions. There was a cold wind at the summit, but we were sheltered on the way up and down by the forest and by the bulk of the hill itself.

  8. From earlier this week: Day out with Moray to Beinn Liath Mhòr a’Ghiubhais Lì in the Fannaichs, NW Highlands of Scotland. Great views above the inversion.

  9. Navigating by compass in the mist across a featureless shoulder, peat groughs and patches of sheet ice meant a straight line was impossible.

I've been playing this game for 40-something years, professionally since 2010, but when the mist thinned and my target ridge appeared dead ahead, it's still a wow! moment.

    Still got it haha. 🗻

  10. Auchnafree Hill from Glen Turret above Crieff with Moray on Thursday. Probably the last day of summer conditions for a while, serious wintery weather coming in over the next few days.

    Loch Turret.
Moraines at the head of Glen Turret.
Auchnafree Hill summit, the distinctive Ben Lawers group at the back.
    More heather moorland.

  11. Beinn Mholach from Drumochter yesterday, a bitterly cold wind but sheltered from the wind it was quite pleasant. Another Corbett for Moray and me.

    Cairngorms National Park, Scotland.

    Loch Garry;
    Two bridges near the head of Loch Garry;
    Sit Club;
    Beinn Mholach summit.

  12. Good weather has come back for a while, but still a cold wind. Headed up Càrn Mòr, a Corbett above the Lecht ski centre. The ski infrastructure is always grim, so avoided it and found a landrover track heading up from about a km beyond the ski centre.
Lots of boggy peat groughs, but easy walking higher up.

  13. The forecast was for the least bad day in between two storm systems. In the event it was a real Goldilocks day: not too hot, not too cold, not too calm, not too windy, not too sunny, not too cloudy. A bit of mist covering the summits, but it cleared while we were there.

Meall na h-Aisre in the #Monadhliath from #GarvaBridge. There's a lot of water on the ground, it was very boggy until we'd gained some height.

  14. Another overnight with Moray, Maoile Lunndaidh above Glen Carron. A long walk in and out, whichever route is taken, from Craig it's a good track to the foot of the hill.
Definitely autumn now, dark soon after 7 & not light til 7. Cooking and eating by head torch, but nice enough to sit outside the tent & listen to the stags roaring. Great to get a couple of days summer conditions in October.
And that is Moray now photographed on all his Munros.

  15. From earlier in the week:

Sgùrr na Lapaich was included on Munro's original list, but was subsequently demoted and is now just a top of Màm Sodhail. But it's a great hill in its own right, and at 3½km along the ridge from Màm Sodhail there's a good argument for reinstating it.

We took our time as it was a hot day, and spent a while snoozing on the summit.

  16. Taking advantage of this spell of summer weather, did a few of the Mamores from Glen Nevis with Moray yesterday. Western Highlands of Scotland.

No apologies for the landscape porn, there’s ridges in every direction.

    - Steall Bridge.
    - Am Bodach and to its left the ridge we walked earlier.
    - Looking to Sgùrr a'Mhaim.
    - Sgùrr a'Mhàim from the ascent route.

  17. A sunny day sandwiched between two stormy days, so a quick couple of hours morning walk with Moray up Craigellachie, the Nature Reserve and hill behind Aviemore. A mixture of summer and autumn - heather and harebell still flowering, the bracken and rowan beries are well into autumn, but everything else is also beginning to turn now.

  18. A day out back in my old office with Moray. Our old office, because Moray usually came to work with me.

Hot hazy sunshine above an inversion. Lurcher's Crag and the Northern Corries to Cairn Gorm. I used to be up here several times a week, now love just wandering without any particular objectives.

  19. Finally some warm settled weather, so two days and an overnight with Moray doing a couple of Munros in the Central Highlands, Creag Meagaidh and Beinn a'Chaorainn. The two hills could easily be done in a single day, but the overnight camp gives us some dog-and-dad time.
And sat outside the tent in the evening with no midges, amazing for August in the Highlands.

  20. The Saddle (plus 3 outlying Tops) and Sgùrr na Sgine in Kintail. Took 2 days with a high level camp at the bealach between them, so as to get some Moray-and-me time.

    - Looking west from The Saddle towards the 3 outlying tops we went over.
    - the trig point on The Saddle.
    - Sgùrr na Sgine summit.
    - The Saddle and the Forcan Ridge from the bealach.

  21. Day out with Moray yesterday in the Monadhliath (grey mountains) above Newtonmore in the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland.

    - Glen Banchor.
    - Loch Dubh.
    - Càrn Dearg summit.
    - Easy walking on Càrn Bàn.

  22. Yesterday was the first day with proper summer weather for a while, Moray and I did a couple of Munros north of Loch Laggan. We heard some thunder in the distance but it stayed hot sunny and dry for us, until torrential rain on the drive home.
Càrn Liath and Stob Poite Coire Ardair.
    Central Highlands, Scotland.

    - Looking back to Càrn Liath.
    - Coire Ardair.
    - Stob Poite Coire Ardair summit.

  23. I realised recently that there are 9 Munros from Moray's round where he didn’t get a pic taken, so looks like we have a project for the rest of this summer.

First up, Meall Chuaich, a straightforward hill less than half an hour down the road, which we went for today. I also realised that the three Munros next to the A9 above Dalwhinnie, including this one, are the only Munros in the area that I never went up with clients.

  24. #ThrowbackThursday
From 12 years ago this week:

Moray's first time through the Lairig Ghru, fun in the Dee at Corrour.

And his first (I think) overnight expedition, onto the Cairngorm plateau.

  25. Another 2 day outing with Moray, through one of the south-to-north passes (an old drove route) in the #Cairngorms, the #Minigaig Pass from #BlairAtholl to #Kingussie.

From the highest point we had a quick detour to the Corbett Leathad an Taobhain, which at 912m is only a couple of metres short of Munro height.

    - Moray relaxing outside a bothy.
    - Leathad an Taobhain summit selfie.
    - An adder in the grass.
    - Overnight camp spot.

  26. A 2 day trip with Moray to explore above the Ailnack Gorge in the Cairngorms. Wow, it's Scotland's biggest glacial meltwater channel, at 10km long & over 100m deep in places. Most of the way no path, just following sheep tracks or ploughing through heather or bog. Quite tricky to photograph that sort of scenery and also get a dog (safely) in the pic. We camped upstream where it was safe to descend & cross.

  27. 2 day trek with overnight camp with Moray this past weekend.

#Newtonmore to #Aviemore over the high ground of the #Monadhliath, #Cairngorms National Park, #Scotland. Still hot and sunny at times, so lots of stops for rests and rehydration.

Lots of ups and downs, lots of peat bog and groughs, but some easy walking on great short vegetation.

    #HikingWithDogs #DogsOfMastodon #Kelpie

  28. First overnight of the year, a 2 day trip with Moray, from the remote Corrour Station on the West Highland line. We camped in Glen Labhair, below Ben Alder.

    - Waiting for the train at Tulloch.
    - Morning at the tent.
    - My side of the tent vs Moray's side of the tent.
    - Loch Ossian comes into view.

  29. Day out with Moray yesterday, 2 Munros at Drumochter, Geal-chàrn and A'Mharconaich, with a mixed day of weather.

12 years ago Geal-chàrn was Moray's first ever Munro, today was probably his 4th time up here.

  30. Since I don’t have a cat for #Caturday, I’m submitting a happy dog in the woods for #Fridog #Dogs #DogsOfMastodon #HikingWithDogs #Hiking

He’s wearing a long lead since dogs are supposed to be on leash in the Park. So he’s on a leash, I’m just not holding the other end unless other people or dogs turn up. 😁

  31. Another of our favourite local walks with Moray today. Through Craigellachie (the National Nature Reserve), up to Craigellachie (the hill), then down to the Burma Road and back via the old old A9 Perth to Inverness road.

    #Craigellachie #Aviemore, #Cairngorms National Park Scotland. #HikingWithDogs #DogsOfMastodon #Kelpie

  32. Moray and I have walked the golf course many times. You reach this lochan at the far end, but we've never walked round it before, until today. The edge is boggy (even under the ice), so probably best waiting for a long dry spell in summer, or a hard frozen spell in winter like now.

    #Aviemore #Cairngorms #HikingWithDogs #DogsOfMastodon #Kelpie

  33. First hill walk of the year, Geal-charn Mòr 824m, our local Corbett*.

Everyone else's pics from above the inversion have sunshine and blue skies. We climbed above the freezing fog of the inversion to find ... damp fog. But it's always a decent walk, even without the spectacular views of the bigger Cairngorms hills.

*Corbetts - the Scottish hills between 2500 and 3000ft, in old money.

  34. Snowy golf course walk today. Wish I'd taken the proper camera.
Never really noticed the distant hills in pic 4 before. Covered in snow they look worth a visit. Had to use www.udeuschle.de to find out where they were, they're the #Cromdale Hills, so think we'll be heading there at some point now.

  35. Happy International Mountain Day.

Far fewer summits this year, but a lot more exploring passes through the hills. So not so many impressive pictures of pointy things.

    1. Glen Avon, Cairngorms.
    2. Lochaber, looking towards the Mamores.
    3. Geal-Chàrn, Ardverikie.
    4. Seana Bhraigh.
