  2. Channel 4 News | Scotland’s rare capercaillie shows recovery after years of decline by Alex Thomson

They are the nearest thing the UK has to a wild turkey. Spectacular, large – sometimes aggressive to humans during the breeding season – the capercaillie appeared to be heading for extinction.

Confined to the pine forests of the Scottish Highlands, the birds have been struggling to survive a series of threats from predators to climate change. But it seems there are signs of hope.

  3. Perched on the banks of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands, Urquhart Castle offers sweeping lake views framed by rugged hills and dense forests. The historic ruins, rich in tales of clans and battles, evoke the region’s turbulent medieval past. A Scottish flag flutters proudly above the stone walls, enhancing the charm for those drawn to #UrquhartCastle and #HistoricRuins. Surrounded by serene waters and vast green landscapes, the spot is a favourite for #NaturePhotography and a must-see highlight of #ScottishHighlands exploration.

  4. “The more time you spend here in the Highlands, the more you recognise and realise and come to feel yourself part of the different layers of the land [… people] see it as wild and untameable, when in actual fact it is very much a human landscape”

  5. This millstone is a memorial to a distant ancestor, Angus of Fersit (Aonghas na Fearste), who was chief of the MacDonalds of Keppoch from c. 1443 to c. 1478. Like many clan chiefs, he was a warrior. Unlike many, he also founded a mill. And this worn millstone is as lovely and peaceful a memorial as anyone could want.

  6. Hype for the Future 73D: L’Anse aux Meadows

Introduction The Vikings and the associated settlements, though largely identified as having originated within the region now known as Northern Europe and Scandinavia, have since expanded from the modern nations of Norway and Sweden east into Finland and Russia, though only barely so, but more importantly, south and west into Denmark, Scotland, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland, and, finally, Newfoundland. 11. A thank you card to lovely hosts and new friends made while bussing around in the Scottish Highlands. I was lucky enough to visit them again a year later and found my card on their fridge 🥰⛰️

  12. A trip to Scotland in 2024 inspired a few of my paintings, the first of which is this shot of a couple Highland cows enjoying their afternoon. I absolutely fell in love with Scotland and can't wait to find my way back over there some day!

  13. Our mate Lydia just summited Ben Nevis and sent us this brilliant footage 🏔️ youtube.com/shorts/ASVpI_jUe8U

Valley paths → scree slopes → windswept summit. That's 1,345m of Scottish mountain drama.

Her Rab Geon Hoody handled it all. Lightweight warmth when you need it most.

What's your next UK mountain challenge?

  14. The woodlands of the Cairngorms have a very special feel to them. So, for this weekend's photo I thought I would share a view of them. They mix two of my favourite's woodland and heather.

  17. Hey all,

I slept horrendously last night, and the weather has been humid and icky. So, I've not even switched my PC on all day.

I've added final varnish into some #pyrography products, and penultimate layers onto others.

Yesterday, I was dumb and did that indoors, sooo I did it outdoors as its recommended for not, you know, breathing in stuff you shouldn't.

  18. Ah, summer in the Highlands! What a joy it was to spend the last few weeks exploring some of my favourite glens in resplendent greens and golden light. These last years I've spent much of my efforts focused on the other "better" seasons (this is of course a fallacy), but for 2025 I committed to finding out what the long hours around the solstice had to offer — and, as usual, Scotland delivered.

  19. Revisiting the memorial stone of the ‘last woman burned as a witch’ in Scotland in film and archival photos. 20. An image from some incredible frosty conditions last December in Scotland's Ancient Caledonian Forest. A morning to remember. I waited quite a while at this particular birch tree for the sun to crest the hills to the south in hopes that the hoar frost would glow, and it did just that and then some!
