  5. Discussing some work on sea ice and coastal polynyas in #Antarctica with colleague and stumbled on this frankly glorious image from @esaclimate #Sentinel2 on 22nd March this year. So much going on in this picture from #ShackletonIceShelf in East Antarctica.

  9. I first met Geir Moholdt in Svalbard in 2005 when we were both PhD students at #UNIS. Now we're both at this high level meeting for the #WMO #PHORS panel, still talking about glaciers.
#SatPic behind his title slide shows #Svalbard #glaciers in summer, not much snow left, a terrible sign for a glacier, confirmed by red blobs that show thinning rates since the 1930s. Since 2011 the glaciers of Svalbard on average have lost half a metre per year!

  14. Preparing a breakfast talk for the research group @dmidk this morning and I'm reminded just how good (in a slightly bleak way) this #satpic animation showing #Antarctica's #IceShelves in retreat...

  18. Man the #Sentinel1 images of NW #Greenland look *cool*

(Sentinel 1 is an #ESA radar satellite - so it can see through clouds, but the images are in black and white)

  22. Some.og my colleagues at DMI will be heading up here in December to put out instruments that will run until the #SeaIce breaks up next year. I'm planning another trip to study snow processes and melange in March/April next year
    fediscience.org/@Ruth_Mottram/
Ruth_Mottram - While the #Antarctic stations are opening up, the #Greenland ones are closing down. The last #Sentinel2  pictures of our field site in northern Greenland this year (30th Sep) have appeared on  @snapplanetio #PolarScience... #satpic

  24. The #PolarNight is coming which means optical sensors like the amazing #Sentinel2 don't really function very well. There will be more imagery available on e.g. #EOBrowser but I confess I like the in the hand functionality of snapplanet on my mobile phone. I get a small kick out of processing a high Res #satpic while making a cup of tea in the morning... #sentinerd
