  1. “Staff were told on Thursday that 102 full-time equivalent positions would be cut from the unit, with a large number to come from climate modelling teams.”

“Leading #ClimateScientist Professor #SarahPerkinsKirkpatrick, president of the #Australian #Meteorological and #Oceanographic Society, described the cuts as “one of the worst things I’ve seen during my career”.

“If we don’t have the Australian climate model, then we simply cannot replicate Australia’s climate and #weather within an accurate envelope; it’s just not possible,” she told this masthead.

“None of the other climate models that exist across the world can do that.”

Cuts to strategic CSIRO climate modelling suggests the Learned leader listens to the Economic sooth-sayers in suits than science based facts.

  2. Happy #Sunday afternoon from the #Northland!

Welcome to #March and #meteorological #spring! The new #month and #season is starting off just like the previous month and season.

Don't worry. There is plenty of #sunshine, and it will be #warming up from here.

  3. Happy #Sunday afternoon from the #Northland!

    We enter the final week of #meteorological #winter with #cool #temperatures and #breezy #winds.

At least there is some #sunshine at times to make up for the late February chill.

  4. Cloud Duvet over the Cleveland Hills

The morning sky was as clear as one could hope for December, though the Cleveland Hills had chosen to hide beneath a bank of cloud. One could call it an orographic cloud, if one wished to sound as if one had paid attention in geography lessons. The term comes from the Greek oros for mountain, which is rather generous for the Cleveland Hill ...

  5. Happy #Monday afternoon from the #Northland!

Welcome to the start of #December and #meteorological #winter, and it definitely feels like the new #season with below average #temperatures.

At least we are getting some peeks of #sunshine out there, but not much.

  6. NORTHLAND FORECAST FOR DECEMBER 1, 2025:

The start of #meteorological #winter and #December will be a #cold one for the #Northland.

Any #snow #showers will end Sunday night with lows in the single digits, but feeling like it’s below zero.

Monday will see a mix of #sunshine and #clouds as a light #breeze forms from the southwest. That won’t help #temperatures as highs stay in the teens.

  7. Happy #Sunday afternoon from the #Northland!

The last day of #meteorological #fall is definitely feeling more like #winter.

Some periodic light #snow #showers will pass through, but the #cold #temperatures are settling in.

  10. By the way, it is the start of a new month, and a new #meteorological season.

#Welcome to #fall in the Northern Hemisphere, and #spring in the Southern Hemisphere!

What can the #Northland expect? The continuing #cooldown from the #summer heat, but still plenty of #precipitation.

  11. Happy #Sunday afternoon from the #Northland!

    For most, today's #weather is a nice way to end #meteorological #summer with #sunshine, #warm #temperatures, and some #humidity in the air.

For a few, pop-up #showers and #thunderstorms are dampening this middle day of the #holiday #weekend.

  12. Happy #Monday afternoon from the #Northland!

It was a #chilly start to the day for late August, but a taste of what is to come next week when #meteorological #fall officially begins.

Despite some #clouds, there is plenty of #sunshine to enjoy the rest of today.

  13. The UK #Meteorological Service - the Met Office - is a couple of miles down the road from here. (The adjacent #roundabout has a light show object of considerable size on it, which distinguishes it from other similar roundabouts, useful for orienting oneself. And shows colours related to the weather forecast. It caused a #storm - of protest - from the usual suspects.)

Since it moved here we have steadily had #records set in #weather.
    That isn't going to stop.

  15. Happy #Sunday afternoon from the #Northland.

This should be a fine #weather day for the beginning of #meteorological #summer with #clear skies, light #winds, and #warm #temperatures.

However, #wildfire #smoke from Canada is bringing #hazy skies and deteriorating #airquality levels.

  18. The Cleveland Hills on a Myst-Hakel Morning

I slogged up through the old whinstone quarry, staring at the ground, my thoughts elsewhere. I braced myself to find the usual rubbish left behind by quad bikers, as if the world is their personal skip. I could hear them active yesterday. The frost-covered, sterile earth stretched ahead, with the bikers’ berms and humps standing around like forg ...

  19. Brume, Roke, and Other Vapourous Delights

There is something magical about mist creeping up the dales of the North York Moors, at least you’re being sentimental. Behind me, the mist—sorry, ‘brume’—was crawling up the Vale of Mowbray, but that was less of a spectacle than this show over Raisdale and Bilsdale.

Speaking of brume, it is the ideal word for this frosty vapour, with roots in the Roman term br ...

  20. Roseberry In the Golden Hour

Roseberry was looking its usual self this morning as we trudged up Aireyholme Lane, the sun just beginning its obligatory climb over the Cleveland Hills. From this angle, Roseberry‘s distinctive shape is rather less obvious. High above, a waning gibbous moon lingered sulkily in the sky, and the early morning sunlight—in what us self-important photographers refer to as ...

  21. Clouds over the North Sea

Ah, another crisp, cold morning with a blue sky. The sun, though, seemed to be having a leisurely lie-in. The reason all became clear atop Capt. Cook’s Monument. A bank of cumulus cloud hovered menacingly over the North Sea—not the friendly fair weather sort, mind you, but cumulus congestus, puffed up and self-important, like galleons scudding the skies. A storm brewi ...

  22. With #meteorological #winter nearing an end, I'm beginning to take a closer look as what is shaping up to be the #warmest winter on record for the #Northland.

One reason for this record; it's hasn't been as #cold as it should be at #night this season.
