“Basically, without the #ACCESS model, we’re running on a dial-up modem,” she said.

In a submission to a #Senate inquiry into CSIRO’s #funding and #resourcing, Science and Technology Australia chief executive #RyanWinn said CSIRO’s work was “deeply embedded in the broader #research ecosystem” in Australia.
“It is a vital partner in projects with universities and industry and hosts critical research infrastructure assets,” Winn said.

“Any reductions to CSIRO’s capacity to maintain this essential support will send far-reaching and enduring ripple effects across the [research and development] system.”

  6. “Staff were told on Thursday that 102 full-time equivalent positions would be cut from the unit, with a large number to come from climate modelling teams.”

“Leading #ClimateScientist Professor #SarahPerkinsKirkpatrick, president of the #Australian #Meteorological and #Oceanographic Society, described the cuts as “one of the worst things I’ve seen during my career”.

“If we don’t have the Australian climate model, then we simply cannot replicate Australia’s climate and #weather within an accurate envelope; it’s just not possible,” she told this masthead.

“None of the other climate models that exist across the world can do that.”

Cuts to strategic CSIRO climate modelling suggests the Learned leader listens to the Economic sooth-sayers in suits than science based facts.

  7. Happy #Sunday afternoon from the #Northland!

Welcome to #March and #meteorological #spring! The new #month and #season is starting off just like the previous month and season.

Don't worry. There is plenty of #sunshine, and it will be #warming up from here.

  8. Happy #Sunday afternoon from the #Northland!

    We enter the final week of #meteorological #winter with #cool #temperatures and #breezy #winds.

At least there is some #sunshine at times to make up for the late February chill.

  9. Cloud Duvet over the Cleveland Hills

The morning sky was as clear as one could hope for December, though the Cleveland Hills had chosen to hide beneath a bank of cloud. One could call it an orographic cloud, if one wished to sound as if one had paid attention in geography lessons. The term comes from the Greek oros for mountain, which is rather generous for the Cleveland Hill ...

Welcome to the start of #December and #meteorological #winter, and it definitely feels like the new #season with below average #temperatures.

  11. NORTHLAND FORECAST FOR DECEMBER 1, 2025:

The start of #meteorological #winter and #December will be a #cold one for the #Northland.

Any #snow #showers will end Sunday night with lows in the single digits, but feeling like it’s below zero.

Monday will see a mix of #sunshine and #clouds as a light #breeze forms from the southwest. That won’t help #temperatures as highs stay in the teens.

  15. The #weather today is highly confused as to it's role in the #season of #fall, before the sun arose it was warm and windy and cloudy, now the winds have subdued themselves, the clouds have pushed on out, the sun is sitting low for this time of morning, and it is cooler than it was when it was dark out, but wait, this afternoon is supposed to be much warmer and partly sunny, and then a chilly night, the many swings in the #meteorological sense would indicate that the weather is having an identity crisis and is acting rather #manic, I think mother nature needs #counseling;

  28. The Cleveland Hills on a Myst-Hakel Morning

I slogged up through the old whinstone quarry, staring at the ground, my thoughts elsewhere. The frost-covered, sterile earth stretched ahead, with the bikers’ berms and humps standing around like forg ...

  29. Brume, Roke, and Other Vapourous Delights

There is something magical about mist creeping up the dales of the North York Moors, at least you’re being sentimental. Behind me, the mist—sorry, ‘brume’—was crawling up the Vale of Mowbray, but that was less of a spectacle than this show over Raisdale and Bilsdale.

Roseberry was looking its usual self this morning as we trudged up Aireyholme Lane, the sun just beginning its obligatory climb over the Cleveland Hills. From this angle, Roseberry‘s distinctive shape is rather less obvious. Ah, another crisp, cold morning with a blue sky. The sun, though, seemed to be having a leisurely lie-in. The reason all became clear atop Capt. Cook’s Monument. As I trudged along the escarpment of Great Ayton Moor, my eyes were drawn southwestward, where a rather theatrical display of clouds was being jostled along by an brisk southwesterly wind. Before "sky" became the common term for the vast expanse above us, it was poetically known as "welkin"—a word closely related to the German "Wolke," meaning cloud, and even more so to "Wölkchen," meaning little cloud. Today, the welkin offered a breathtaking sight for those who gazed upward.
