  1. How 2,000 Tons Of #Sand Stores 100 Megawatt-Hours And Slashes Carbon Emissions 70%

By John Koetsier, Apr 14, 2026,

"#PolarNight is doubling its size with a new 250 megawatt-hour facility in Vaaksy, #Finland, which will output 2 megawatts of energy consistently. That newer and bigger battery will use only slightly more sand – 2,400 tons – because the #SandBattery’s design renders it more efficient with size. What will become the new world’s largest sand battery is already under construction and is scheduled for completion in summer 2027."

  2. Spent a week in Utqiagvik — the northernmost town in the U.S., deep in the Arctic Circle. 98 photos of polar night skies, Iñupiat life, whale-bone arches & a town where the sun sleeps for weeks. Strange, cold & oddly beautiful. Read our winter travelogue and wonder why you haven’t booked a flight yet.

  3. Inuvik, Northwest Territories 🌑 Polar Night. No sunrise today, but plenty of cold. We’re sitting at a bone-chilling -40°C with clear skies. The stars and Aurora are the only light we’ve got, but they should be spectacular tonight!

    High: -35°C | Low: -41°C

Tip: Check on your neighbors, especially elders, during this extreme cold snap. #Inuvik #NWT #PolarNight #ArcticCold #AuroraBorealis

  4. The sun has set in #Utqiagvik and won’t return until late January. 🌆 🌠

  5. #travel

I've been fantasizing about moving to #Svalbard because of the #polarnight phenomenon(though, sadly, only 3 glorious months of it). I LOVE LOVE LOVE night time. Then, I found out that the village makes its money through tourism, which means, potentially rude and hyper-entitled humans in my would-be quiet living destination, so I guess I'll have to shack up as close to the south pole in Antarctica as I can.

  6. We spent the last week of one December in the long polar night (66 days of darkness) at Utqiaġvik (Barrow), the northernmost point of continental North America. The Iñupiaq people live here deep inside the Arctic Circle for over 4,000 years, in igloos in winters till very recently. Our story is at thevagabondcouple.blogspot.com

  11. Today we had the first time good enough weather for a small #hike up to a close mountain. We had a really nice view down to #longyearbyen, which is especially helpfull for getting a feeling of distances and spaces around here. Otherwise this is really hard, when you experience it all in the dark only, due to #PolarNight

  12. Some of the most unusual #heat this summer occurred in #Antarctica, where plumes of warm air disrupted the deep freeze of the 6-month #PolarNight. #Temperatures on the continent spiked about 28°C (50°F) above usual levels, & the surrounding #SeaIce shrank to nearly unprecedented lows.

The changes in Antarctica are especially eye-opening, Buontempo said, because the region has historically been isolated from the rest of the warming #planet by a strong polar vortex & the swirling Southern Ocean.

  13. If you are in Northern Lapland, this weekend will likely be the last time the sun rises this year. In Nuorgam, Finnish Lapland, the sun will rise again on the 18th of January, 2024.

This colorscale amazes me every year 💜💙🧡💛

  15. No sunrise here for another couple of weeks, but with the polar light, it is still pretty light in the middle of the day.
If the sun was rising, it would be behind me when I took the photo.

  16. It's the reason for the season: Happy Solstice!

It's been a month since we last saw the sun, and we have one more month to go until the next sunrise. Meanwhile we're enjoying a different kind of light dancing across the sky almost daily.

So, if the sun was rising here now, this is taken looking away from where it would set.

  18. I haven't contributed as much here recently - been rather busy working with our #postdocs to process samples from #polarnight. As shown by one of the team, this requires a laser-like focus to avoid contamination or sample thawing while working in the dark...

  19. We can still just see the sun at midday, if we climb a big hill. In the village, it's not back until around 17th Jan.

  20. Началась полярная ночь. Прекрасная погода. #polarnight

  21. Such FOMO when it was casually mentioned today in a call that next week in #Tromsø the period with no daylight will have started. #polarnight

Maybe next year I'll finally make it to the #Munin conference in person! (and have an epic train journey to get there)

  22. The #PolarNight is coming which means optical sensors like the amazing #Sentinel2 don't really function very well. There will be more imagery available on e.g. #EOBrowser but I confess I like the in the hand functionality of snapplanet on my mobile phone. I get a small kick out of processing a high Res #satpic while making a cup of tea in the morning... #sentinerd
