A través de su Facultad de Odontología, Aída Borges Yáñez, Erika Heredia Ponce, Laura Bárbara Velázquez Olmedo y Sergio Sánchez García se integran a grupos de participación global

Durante los próximos cuatro años, el Departamento de Salud Pública Bucal de la División de Estudios de Posgrado e Investigación de la Facultad de Odontología (FO) de la UNAM será el Centro Colaborador en Salud Bucal y Envejecimiento de la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), el cual permitirá que un grupo de universitarias y universitarios expertos en la especialidad propongan políticas públicas.
Esta distinción por parte del organismo internacional también incluye promover entre la población de la tercera edad y sus cuidadores la importancia de la salud bucal, explicó la jefa del Departamento de Salud Pública Bucal, profesora de la FO y líder del proyecto, Aída Borges Yáñez.
Los centros son instituciones (universidades, hospitales o institutos de investigación) designadas para realizar actividades en apoyo de los programas de la Organización. Colaboran con la OPS/OMS en un área específica, en este caso la salud bucal, fundamental para el bienestar integral de dientes, encías y cavidad oral en cada etapa de la vida.
Desde hace tiempo teníamos relación con la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS), la cual mostró interés, al igual que nosotros, en promover el bienestar en la Década del Envejecimiento Saludable. Efectuó la propuesta, la OMS la analizó y autorizó en Ginebra, luego de un proceso de dos años y medio, recordó la universitaria.
En esta estrategia participan Aída Borges, Erika Heredia Ponce, Laura Bárbara Velázquez Olmedo y Sergio Sánchez García, quienes pertenecen a la FO.
Mejorar la calidad de vida
A decir del profesor del Área Epidemiológica, Sergio Sánchez, contar con un Centro Colaborador es un orgullo para la UNAM y una oportunidad para la Facultad de integrarse a grupos de participación global. Es relevante porque hay poco trabajo internacional en este campo, y es el único en América Latina en Envejecimiento y Salud Bucal.
De acuerdo con la también profesora de esa entidad académica y responsable del Área Epidemiológica, Erika Heredia, se aísla la boca del resto del cuerpo, es decir, no se da su valor. Empoderar a las y los profesionales de la salud oral es fundamental para trabajar de manera holística, y más con las personas adultas mayores.
En ese grupo etario la relación con la nutrición se asocia con síndromes importantes como la fragilidad, que es deterioro progresivo relacionado con la edad de las funciones de masticación, deglución y movilidad de la lengua; y la sarcopenia, que es la pérdida progresiva de masa, fuerza y función muscular, precisó.
Laura Bárbara Velázquez, profesora del Área Epidemiológica, destacó que mediante las políticas públicas se podrá incidir en mejorar la salud bucal y calidad de vida de las comunidades.
En el Centro Colaborador diseñarán un módulo de un curso a distancia dirigido a profesionales de atención primaria y personas trabajadoras comunitarias sobre prevención, promoción y gestión del bienestar bucodental, de acuerdo con las directrices de la Década del Envejecimiento Saludable.
Realizarán también una investigación sobre las necesidades de información en la materia por parte de las personas mayores y sus cuidadores, con el fin de diseñar y desarrollar una aplicación móvil, la cual contará con lenguaje sencillo y comprensible, informó Borges Yáñez. –sn–
